1 A covenant, I solemnised for mine eyes,How then could I gaze upon a virgin?
1 "Fiz acordo com os meus olhos de não olhar com cobiça para as moças.
2 Or what would have been my portion of GOD from above? Or what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
2 Pois qual é a porção que o homem recebe de Deus, lá de cima? Qual a sua herança do Todo-poderoso, que habita nas alturas?
3 Is there not calamity, for the perverse? and misfortune, for the workers of iniquity?
3 Não é ruína para os ímpios, desgraça para os que fazem o mal?
4 Would, he, not see my ways? and of all my steps, take account?
4 Não vê ele os meus caminhos, e não considera cada um de meus passos?
5 Verily I walked not in falsity, nor did my foot haste unto deceit:
5 "Se me conduzi com falsidade, ou se meus pés se apressaram a enganar,
6 Let him weigh me in balances of righteousness,and let GOD take note of mine integrity!
6 Deus me pese em balança justa, e saberá que não tenho culpa;
7 If my goings have swerved from the way,and, after mine eyes, hath gone my heart, and, to my hands, hath adhered any stain,
7 se meus passos desviaram-se do caminho, se o meu coração foi conduzido por meus olhos, ou se minhas mãos foram contaminadas,
8 Let me sow but, another, eat. And let, what I have springing up, be uprooted!
8 que outros comam o que semeei, e que as minhas plantações sejam arrancadas pelas raízes.
9 If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, or, by the door of my neighbour, I have lien in wait,
9 "Se o meu coração foi seduzido por mulher, ou se fiquei à espreita junto à porta do meu próximo,
10 Let my wife, grind to another, and, over her, let others bend!
10 que a minha esposa moa cereal de outro homem, e que outros durmam com ela.
11 Surely that had been a shameful thing! and that an iniquity for the judges!
11 Pois fazê-lo seria vergonhoso, crime merecedor de julgamento.
12 Surely, a fire, had that been, which, unto destruction, would have consumed, and, of all mine increase, had it torn up the root.
12 Isso é um fogo que consome até a Destruição; teria extirpado a minha colheita.
13 If I refused the right of my servant, or my handmaid, when they contended with me,
13 "Se neguei justiça aos meus servos e servas, quando reclamaram contra mim,
14 What then could I have done when GOD rose up? And, when he visited, what could I have answered him?
14 que farei quando Deus me confrontar? Que responderei quando chamado a prestar contas?
15 Did not he who, in the womb, made me, make him? And is not he who formed us in the body one?
15 Aquele que me fez no ventre materno não fez também a eles? Não foi ele quem formou a mim e a eles No interior de nossas mães?
16 If I withheldfrom pleasurethe poor, or, the eyes of the widow, I dimmed;
16 "Se não atendi aos desejos do pobre, ou se fatiguei os olhos da viúva,
17 Or, used to eat my morsel alone, so that the fatherless did not eat thereof;
17 se comi meu pão sozinho, sem compartilhá-lo com o órfão,
18 Surely, from my youth, he grew up to me, as to a father, and, from my birth, I acted as guide to her:
18 sendo que desde a minha juventude o criei como se fosse seu pai, e desde o nascimento guiei a viúva;
19 If I saw one perishing for lack of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;
19 se vi alguém morrendo por falta de roupa, ou um necessitado sem cobertor,
20 If his loins did not bless me, or if, with the fleece of my lambs, he did not warm himself;
20 e o seu coração não me abençoou porque o aqueci com a lã de minhas ovelhas,
21 If I shookagainst the fatherlessmy hand, when I saw, in the gate, his need of my help,
21 se levantei a mão contra o órfão, ciente da minha influência no tribunal,
22 Let, my shoulder, from the shoulder-blade, fall, and, my arm, from the upper bone, be broken;
22 que o meu braço descaia do ombro, e se quebre nas juntas.
23 For, a dread unto me, was calamity from GOD, and, from his majesty, I could not escape.
23 Pois eu tinha medo que Deus me destruísse, e, temendo o seu esplendor, não podia fazer tais coisas.
24 If I made gold my stay, and, to precious metal, said, My confidence!
24 "Se pus no ouro a minha confiança e disse ao ouro puro: Você é a minha garantia,
25 If I rejoiced because great was my substance, and, an abundance, my hand had discovered;
25 se me regozijei por ter grande riqueza, pela fortuna que as minhas mãos obtiveram,
26 If I looked at the sun, when it flashed forth light, or at the moon, majestically marching along;
26 se contemplei o sol em seu fulgor e a lua a mover-se esplêndida,
27 And befooled secretly was my heart, so that my hand kissed my mouth,
27 e em segredo o meu coração foi seduzido e a minha mão lhes ofereceu beijos de veneração,
28 That too, had been a judicial iniquity, For I should have been false to GOD, above.
28 esses também seriam pecados merecedores de condenação, pois eu teria sido infiel a Deus, que está nas alturas.
29 If rejoiced in the misfortune of him that hated me, or exulted when calamity found him;
29 "Se a desgraça do meu inimigo me alegrou, ou se os problemas que teve me deram prazer;
30 Neither did I suffer my palate to sin, by asking, with a curse, for his life:
30 eu, que nunca deixei minha boca pecar, lançando maldição sobre ele;
31 If the men of my household have not said, Oh for some of his fleshwe cannot get filled,
31 se os que moram em minha casa nunca tivessem dito: ‘Quem não recebeu de Jó um pedaço de carne? ’,
32 Outside, the sojourner lodged not for the night, My doorsto the wayfarer, I threw open.
32 sendo que nenhum estrangeiro teve que passar a noite na rua, pois a minha porta sempre esteve aberta para o viajante;
33 If I covered, like Adam, my transgressions, by hiding in my bosom mine iniquity,
33 se escondi o meu pecado, como outros fazem, acobertando no coração a minha culpa,
34 Then let me be made to tremble at a great throng, yea let, the contempt of families, terrify me, so that, keeping silence, I shall not go out of the door!
34 com tanto medo da multidão e do desprezo dos familiares que me calei e não saí de casa...
35 Oh that I had one to hear me, Lo! my crossmark, May, the Almighty, answer me! And would that, a book, mine opponent had written!
35 ( "Ah, se alguém me ouvisse! Agora assino a minha defesa. Que o Todo-poderoso me responda; que o meu acusador faça a acusação por escrito.
36 Oh! would I not, upon my shoulder, lift it, or bind it as a crown upon me;
36 Eu bem que a levaria nos ombros e a usaria como coroa.
37 The number of my footsteps, I would declare to him, Like a noble, would I draw near to him.
37 Eu lhe falaria sobre todos os meus passos; como um príncipe eu me aproximaria dele. )
38 If, against me, my ground used to cry out, and, together, my ridges did weep;
38 "Se a minha terra se queixar de mim e todos os seus sulcos chorarem,
39 If, the strength thereof, I used to eat, without payment, and, the soul of the holders thereof, I made groan;
39 se consumi os seus produtos sem nada pagar, ou se causei desânimo aos seus ocupantes,
40 Instead of wheat, let there come forth bramble, and, instead of barley, a bad-smelling weed! Ended are the words of Job.
40 que me venham espinhos em lugar de trigo e ervas daninhas em lugar de cevada". Aqui terminam as palavras de Jó.
