1 A covenant, I solemnised for mine eyes,How then could I gaze upon a virgin?
1 Eu fiz um pacto com os meus olhos; por que então eu pensaria em uma donzela?
2 Or what would have been my portion of GOD from above? Or what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
2 Pois que porção teria eu do Deus lá de cima. E que herança do Todo-Poderoso lá do alto?
3 Is there not calamity, for the perverse? and misfortune, for the workers of iniquity?
3 Não é destruição para o ímpio, e uma estranha punição aos trabalhadores da iniquidade?
4 Would, he, not see my ways? and of all my steps, take account?
4 Acaso ele não vê os meus caminhos, e conta todos os meus passos?
5 Verily I walked not in falsity, nor did my foot haste unto deceit:
5 Se eu tenho andado na vaidade, ou se o meu pé tem se apressado para o engano;
6 Let him weigh me in balances of righteousness,and let GOD take note of mine integrity!
6 que eu seja pesado em balança justa, para que Deus conheça a minha integridade.
7 If my goings have swerved from the way,and, after mine eyes, hath gone my heart, and, to my hands, hath adhered any stain,
7 Se os meus passos se desviaram do caminho, e o meu coração tem andado após os meus olhos, e se qualquer mancha grudou em minhas mãos;
8 Let me sow but, another, eat. And let, what I have springing up, be uprooted!
8 então, semeie eu e outro coma, e seja a minha descendência arrancada desde a raiz.
9 If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, or, by the door of my neighbour, I have lien in wait,
9 Se o meu coração tem sido enganado por uma mulher, ou se fiquei à espreita à porta do meu vizinho;
10 Let my wife, grind to another, and, over her, let others bend!
10 então, que minha esposa moa para outro e que outros se encurvem sobre ela;
11 Surely that had been a shameful thing! and that an iniquity for the judges!
11 porque isto é um crime hediondo, sim, é uma iniquidade a ser punida pelos juízes.
12 Surely, a fire, had that been, which, unto destruction, would have consumed, and, of all mine increase, had it torn up the root.
12 Porque é fogo que consome até a destruição, e desarraigaria todo o meu acréscimo.
13 If I refused the right of my servant, or my handmaid, when they contended with me,
13 Se desprezei a causa do meu servo ou da minha serva, quando eles contendiam comigo;
14 What then could I have done when GOD rose up? And, when he visited, what could I have answered him?
14 o que então farei quando Deus se levantar? E quando ele me visitar, o que responderei a ele?
15 Did not he who, in the womb, made me, make him? And is not he who formed us in the body one?
15 Aquele que me formou no ventre não o fez a ele, e não nos formou no útero?
16 If I withheldfrom pleasurethe poor, or, the eyes of the widow, I dimmed;
16 Se retive aos pobres o seu desejo, ou fiz falhar os olhos da viúva;
17 Or, used to eat my morsel alone, so that the fatherless did not eat thereof;
17 ou se sozinho comi o meu bocado, e o órfão não comeu dele;
18 Surely, from my youth, he grew up to me, as to a father, and, from my birth, I acted as guide to her:
18 (porque desde a minha juventude cresceu comigo, como com seu pai, e eu a guiei desde o útero de minha mãe).
19 If I saw one perishing for lack of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;
19 Se vi alguém perecer por necessitar de roupa, ou qualquer pobre sem coberta;
20 If his loins did not bless me, or if, with the fleece of my lambs, he did not warm himself;
20 se os seus lombos não me abençoaram, se ele não se aquentava com a lã dos meus cordeiros;
21 If I shookagainst the fatherlessmy hand, when I saw, in the gate, his need of my help,
21 se eu levantei a minha mão contra o órfão, quando vi minha ajuda ao portão;
22 Let, my shoulder, from the shoulder-blade, fall, and, my arm, from the upper bone, be broken;
22 então que meu braço caia do ombro da juntura, e que meu braço se quebre desde o osso.
23 For, a dread unto me, was calamity from GOD, and, from his majesty, I could not escape.
23 Porque a destruição de Deus era um terror para mim, e por causa de sua grandeza eu não pude suportar.
24 If I made gold my stay, and, to precious metal, said, My confidence!
24 Se eu fiz do ouro minha esperança, ou disse ao ouro fino: tu és minha confiança;
25 If I rejoiced because great was my substance, and, an abundance, my hand had discovered;
25 se me regozijei porque minha riqueza era grande, e porque minha mão havia conseguido muito;
26 If I looked at the sun, when it flashed forth light, or at the moon, majestically marching along;
26 se eu contemplei o sol, quando resplandecia, ou a lua, caminhando em esplendor;
27 And befooled secretly was my heart, so that my hand kissed my mouth,
27 e o meu coração foi seduzido em secreto, ou a minha boca beijou a minha mão,
28 That too, had been a judicial iniquity, For I should have been false to GOD, above.
28 isto também seria uma iniquidade a ser punida pelo juiz; pois eu teria negado a Deus, que está acima.
29 If rejoiced in the misfortune of him that hated me, or exulted when calamity found him;
29 Se me regozijei na destruição daquele que me odeia, ou me exultei quando o mal o encontrou,
30 Neither did I suffer my palate to sin, by asking, with a curse, for his life:
30 também não fiz pecar a minha boca, desejando maldição à sua alma.
31 If the men of my household have not said, Oh for some of his fleshwe cannot get filled,
31 Se os homens do meu tabernáculo não dissessem: Ah, se tivéssemos da sua carne! Não estaríamos satisfeitos.
32 Outside, the sojourner lodged not for the night, My doorsto the wayfarer, I threw open.
32 O estrangeiro não se hospedava na rua; mas eu abria as minhas portas ao viajante.
33 If I covered, like Adam, my transgressions, by hiding in my bosom mine iniquity,
33 Se eu encobri as minhas transgressões como Adão, escondendo a minha iniquidade no meu peito;
34 Then let me be made to tremble at a great throng, yea let, the contempt of families, terrify me, so that, keeping silence, I shall not go out of the door!
34 eu temi a grande multidão, ou o desprezo das famílias me aterrorizava, de forma que eu mantivesse o meu silêncio, e não saísse porta afora?
35 Oh that I had one to hear me, Lo! my crossmark, May, the Almighty, answer me! And would that, a book, mine opponent had written!
35 Ah! Se um me ouvisse! Eis que o meu desejo é que o Todo-Poderoso me respondesse, e que o meu adversário tivesse escrito um livro.
36 Oh! would I not, upon my shoulder, lift it, or bind it as a crown upon me;
36 Certamente, eu o tomaria sobre meu ombro, e o prenderia a mim como uma coroa.
37 The number of my footsteps, I would declare to him, Like a noble, would I draw near to him.
37 Eu lhe declararia o número dos meus passos; como um príncipe me chegaria a ele.
38 If, against me, my ground used to cry out, and, together, my ridges did weep;
38 Se a minha terra clamar contra mim, e se os seus sulcos da mesma forma reclamarem,
39 If, the strength thereof, I used to eat, without payment, and, the soul of the holders thereof, I made groan;
39 se comi os seus frutos sem dinheiro, ou fiz com que seus donos perdessem a vida;
40 Instead of wheat, let there come forth bramble, and, instead of barley, a bad-smelling weed! Ended are the words of Job.
40 que cardos cresçam ao invés de trigo, e joio por cevada. Acabaram-se as palavras de Jó.
