1 A covenant, I solemnised for mine eyes,How then could I gaze upon a virgin?
1 “Fiz uma aliança com os meus olhos: de não olhar para uma virgem.
2 Or what would have been my portion of GOD from above? Or what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
2 Do contrário, qual seria a minha porção do Deus lá de cima, e que herança receberia do Todo-Poderoso desde as alturas?
3 Is there not calamity, for the perverse? and misfortune, for the workers of iniquity?
3 Por acaso, não é a perdição para o ímpio, e a desgraça para os que praticam a maldade?
4 Would, he, not see my ways? and of all my steps, take account?
4 Será que Deus não vê os meus caminhos e não conta todos os meus passos?
5 Verily I walked not in falsity, nor did my foot haste unto deceit:
5 Se andei com falsidade ou se o meu pé se apressou para o engano
6 Let him weigh me in balances of righteousness,and let GOD take note of mine integrity!
6 — que Deus me pese numa balança justa e conhecerá a minha integridade!”
7 If my goings have swerved from the way,and, after mine eyes, hath gone my heart, and, to my hands, hath adhered any stain,
7 “Se os meus passos se desviaram do caminho, se o meu coração segue os meus olhos, e se alguma mancha se apegou às minhas mãos,
8 Let me sow but, another, eat. And let, what I have springing up, be uprooted!
8 então que outros comam o que eu semeei, e que seja arrancado o que se produz no meu campo.
9 If my heart hath been enticed unto a woman, or, by the door of my neighbour, I have lien in wait,
9 Se o meu coração se deixou seduzir por uma mulher, se fiquei rondando a porta do meu próximo,
10 Let my wife, grind to another, and, over her, let others bend!
10 então que a minha mulher moa os cereais para outro homem, e que outros se deitem com ela.
11 Surely that had been a shameful thing! and that an iniquity for the judges!
11 Pois eu teria cometido um crime hediondo, um delito a ser punido pelos juízes.
12 Surely, a fire, had that been, which, unto destruction, would have consumed, and, of all mine increase, had it torn up the root.
12 Isso seria fogo que consome até a destruição e arrancaria toda a minha colheita pela raiz.”
13 If I refused the right of my servant, or my handmaid, when they contended with me,
13 “Se não reconheci o direito do meu servo ou da minha serva quando eles reclamavam contra mim,
14 What then could I have done when GOD rose up? And, when he visited, what could I have answered him?
14 então que faria eu quando Deus se levantasse no tribunal? E, se ele me interrogasse, que lhe responderia eu?
15 Did not he who, in the womb, made me, make him? And is not he who formed us in the body one?
15 Aquele que me formou no ventre de minha mãe não os fez também a eles? Ou não é o mesmo Deus que nos formou no ventre materno?”
16 If I withheldfrom pleasurethe poor, or, the eyes of the widow, I dimmed;
16 “Se retive o que os pobres desejavam ou deixei que os olhos das viúvas esperassem em vão;
17 Or, used to eat my morsel alone, so that the fatherless did not eat thereof;
17 ou, se sozinho comi o meu bocado, sem reparti-lo com os órfãos
18 Surely, from my youth, he grew up to me, as to a father, and, from my birth, I acted as guide to her:
18 — porque desde a minha mocidade eu os criei como se fosse pai deles, durante toda a minha vida fui o guia das viúvas —;
19 If I saw one perishing for lack of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;
19 se vi alguém perecer por falta de roupa ou notava que o necessitado não tinha com que se cobrir;
20 If his loins did not bless me, or if, with the fleece of my lambs, he did not warm himself;
20 se ele não me agradeceu do fundo do coração, quando se aquecia com a lã dos meus cordeiros;
21 If I shookagainst the fatherlessmy hand, when I saw, in the gate, his need of my help,
21 se eu levantei a mão contra o órfão, sabendo que eu tinha o apoio dos juízes,
22 Let, my shoulder, from the shoulder-blade, fall, and, my arm, from the upper bone, be broken;
22 então que a omoplata caia do meu ombro, e que o meu braço seja arrancado da articulação.
23 For, a dread unto me, was calamity from GOD, and, from his majesty, I could not escape.
23 Porque o castigo de Deus seria para mim um assombro, e eu não poderia enfrentar a sua majestade.”
24 If I made gold my stay, and, to precious metal, said, My confidence!
24 “Se no ouro pus a minha esperança ou se eu disse ao ouro fino: ‘Você é a minha garantia’;
25 If I rejoiced because great was my substance, and, an abundance, my hand had discovered;
25 se me alegrei por ser grande a minha riqueza e por ter a minha mão alcançado muito;
26 If I looked at the sun, when it flashed forth light, or at the moon, majestically marching along;
26 se olhei para o sol, quando resplandecia, ou para a lua, que caminhava em seu esplendor,
27 And befooled secretly was my heart, so that my hand kissed my mouth,
27 e o meu coração se deixou seduzir em segredo, e eu lhes atirei beijos com a mão,
28 That too, had been a judicial iniquity, For I should have been false to GOD, above.
28 também isto seria um delito a ser punido pelos juízes, pois eu teria negado a Deus, que está lá em cima.”
29 If rejoiced in the misfortune of him that hated me, or exulted when calamity found him;
29 “Se me alegrei com a desgraça do que me odeia e se exultei quando o mal o atingiu
30 Neither did I suffer my palate to sin, by asking, with a curse, for his life:
30 — eu que não deixei a minha boca pecar, rogando praga para que morresse —;
31 If the men of my household have not said, Oh for some of his fleshwe cannot get filled,
31 se as pessoas que moram na minha tenda não disseram: ‘Quem nos dera encontrar alguém que não se saciou da carne provida por ele’
32 Outside, the sojourner lodged not for the night, My doorsto the wayfarer, I threw open.
32 — pois o estrangeiro não pernoitava na rua; as minhas portas estavam sempre abertas para os viajantes! —;
33 If I covered, like Adam, my transgressions, by hiding in my bosom mine iniquity,
33 se, como Adão, encobri as minhas transgressões, ocultando a minha iniquidade em meu íntimo,
34 Then let me be made to tremble at a great throng, yea let, the contempt of families, terrify me, so that, keeping silence, I shall not go out of the door!
34 porque eu tinha medo da grande multidão, e o desprezo das famílias me apavorava, fazendo com que eu me calasse e não saísse da porta…”
35 Oh that I had one to hear me, Lo! my crossmark, May, the Almighty, answer me! And would that, a book, mine opponent had written!
35 “Quem dera que eu tivesse quem me ouvisse! Eis aqui a minha defesa assinada! Que o Todo-Poderoso me responda! Que o meu adversário escreva a sua acusação!
36 Oh! would I not, upon my shoulder, lift it, or bind it as a crown upon me;
36 Por certo que a levaria sobre o meu ombro, e a poria sobre mim como se fosse uma coroa.
37 The number of my footsteps, I would declare to him, Like a noble, would I draw near to him.
37 Eu lhe mostraria o número dos meus passos; como príncipe eu me aproximaria dele.”
38 If, against me, my ground used to cry out, and, together, my ridges did weep;
38 “Se a minha terra clamar contra mim, e se os seus sulcos juntamente chorarem;
39 If, the strength thereof, I used to eat, without payment, and, the soul of the holders thereof, I made groan;
39 se comi os seus frutos sem pagar ou se causei a morte aos seus donos,
40 Instead of wheat, let there come forth bramble, and, instead of barley, a bad-smelling weed! Ended are the words of Job.
40 que ela produza espinhos em vez de trigo, e joio em lugar de cevada.” Fim das palavras de Jó.
