1 And Job answereth and saith: --
1 Respondeu, porém, Jó, dizendo:
2 Hear ye diligently my word, And this is your consolation.
2 Ouvi atentamente as minhas razões; e isto vos sirva de consolação.
3 Bear with me, and I speak, And after my speaking -- ye may deride.
3 Sofrei-me, e eu falarei; e havendo eu falado, zombai.
4 I -- to man [is] my complaint? and if [so], wherefore May not my temper become short?
4 Porventura eu me queixo de algum homem? Porém, ainda que assim fosse, por que não se angustiaria o meu espírito?
5 Turn unto me, and be astonished, And put hand to mouth.
5 Olhai para mim, e pasmai; e ponde a mão sobre a boca.
6 Yea, if I have remembered, then I have been troubled. And my flesh hath taken fright.
6 Porque, quando me lembro disto me perturbo, e a minha carne é sobressaltada de horror.
7 Wherefore do the wicked live? They have become old, Yea, they have been mighty in wealth.
7 Por que razão vivem os ímpios, envelhecem, e ainda se robustecem em poder?
8 Their seed is established, Before their face with them, And their offspring before their eyes.
8 A sua descendência se estabelece com eles perante a sua face; e os seus renovos perante os seus olhos.
9 Their houses [are] peace without fear, Nor [is] a rod of God upon them.
9 As suas casas têm paz, sem temor; e a vara de Deus não está sobre eles.
10 His bullock hath eaten corn, and doth not loath. His cow bringeth forth safely, And doth not miscarry.
10 O seu touro gera, e não falha; pare a sua vaca, e não aborta.
11 They send forth as a flock their sucklings, And their children skip,
11 Fazem sair as suas crianças, como a um rebanho, e seus filhos andam saltando.
12 They lift [themselves] up at timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of an organ.
12 Levantam a voz, ao som do tamboril e da harpa, e alegram-se ao som do órgão.
13 They wear out in good their days, And in a moment [to] Sheol go down.
13 Na prosperidade gastam os seus dias, e num momento descem à sepultura.
14 And they say to God, `Turn aside from us, And the knowledge of Thy ways We have not desired.
14 E, todavia, dizem a Deus: Retira-te de nós; porque não desejamos ter conhecimento dos teus caminhos.
15 What [is] the Mighty One that we serve Him? And what do we profit when we meet with Him?`
15 Quem é o Todo-Poderoso, para que nós o sirvamos? E que nos aproveitará que lhe façamos orações?
16 Lo, not in their hand [is] their good, (The counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)
16 Vede, porém, que a prosperidade não está nas mãos deles; esteja longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios!
17 How oft is the lamp of the wicked extinguished, And come on them doth their calamity? Pangs He apportioneth in His anger.
17 Quantas vezes sucede que se apaga a lâmpada dos ímpios, e lhes sobrevém a sua destruição? E Deus na sua ira lhes reparte dores!
18 They are as straw before wind, And as chaff a hurricane hath stolen away,
18 Porque são como a palha diante do vento, e como a pragana, que arrebata o redemoinho.
19 God layeth up for his sons his sorrow, He giveth recompense unto him -- and he knoweth.
19 Deus guarda a sua violência para seus filhos, e dá-lhe o pago, para que o conheça.
20 His own eyes see his destruction, And of the wrath of the Mighty he drinketh.
20 Seus olhos verão a sua ruína, e ele beberá do furor do Todo-Poderoso.
21 For what [is] his delight in his house after him, And the number of his months cut off?
21 Por que, que prazer teria na sua casa, depois de morto, cortando-se-lhe o número dos seus meses?
22 To God doth [one] teach knowledge, And He the high doth judge?
22 Porventura a Deus se ensinaria ciência, a ele que julga os excelsos?
23 This [one] dieth in his perfect strength, Wholly at ease and quiet.
23 Um morre na força da sua plenitude, estando inteiramente sossegado e tranqüilo.
24 His breasts have been full of milk, And marrow his bones doth moisten.
24 Com seus baldes cheios de leite, e a medula dos seus ossos umedecida.
25 And this [one] dieth with a bitter soul, And have not eaten with gladness.
25 E outro, ao contrário, morre na amargura do seu coração, não havendo provado do bem.
26 Together -- on the dust they lie down, And the worm doth cover them over.
26 Juntamente jazem no pó, e os vermes os cobrem.
27 Lo, I have known your thoughts, And the devices against me ye do wrongfully.
27 Eis que conheço bem os vossos pensamentos; e os maus intentos com que injustamente me fazeis violência.
28 For ye say, `Where [is] the house of the noble? And where the tent -- The tabernacles of the wicked?`
28 Porque direis: Onde está a casa do príncipe, e onde a tenda em que moravam os ímpios?
29 Have ye not asked those passing by the way? And their signs do ye not know?
29 Porventura não perguntastes aos que passam pelo caminho, e não conheceis os seus sinais,
30 That to a day of calamity is the wicked spared. To a day of wrath they are brought.
30 Que o mau é preservado para o dia da destruição; e arrebatado no dia do furor?
31 Who doth declare to his face his way? And [for] that which he hath done, Who doth give recompence to him?
31 Quem acusará diante dele o seu caminho, e quem lhe dará o pago do que faz?
32 And he -- to the graves he is brought. And over the heap a watch is kept.
32 Finalmente é levado à sepultura, e vigiam-lhe o túmulo.
33 Sweet to him have been the clods of the valley, And after him every man he draweth, And before him there is no numbering.
33 Os torrões do vale lhe são doces, e o seguirão todos os homens; e adiante dele foram inumeráveis.
34 And how do ye comfort me [with] vanity, And in your answers hath been left trespass?
34 Como, pois, me consolais com vaidade? Pois nas vossas respostas ainda resta a transgressão.
