1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:
1 Então, respondeu Elifaz, o temanita, e disse:
2 If one attempts a word with you, will you become weary? But who can restrain words?
2 Se intentar alguém falar-te, enfadar-te-ás? Quem, todavia, poderá conter as palavras?
3 Surely you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands.
3 Eis que tens ensinado a muitos e tens fortalecido mãos fracas.
4 Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees.
4 As tuas palavras têm sustentado aos que tropeçavam, e os joelhos vacilantes tens fortificado.
5 But now it comes upon you, and you are weary; it touches you, and you are dismayed.
5 Mas agora, em chegando a tua vez, tu te enfadas; sendo tu atingido, te perturbas.
6 Is not your reverence your confidence? And the integrity of your ways your hope?
6 Porventura, não é o teu temor de Deus aquilo em que confias, e a tua esperança, a retidão dos teus caminhos?
7 Remember now, who ever perished being innocent? Or where were the upright ever cut off?
7 Lembra-te: acaso, já pereceu algum inocente? E onde foram os retos destruídos?
8 Even as I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.
8 Segundo eu tenho visto, os que lavram a iniquidade e semeiam o mal, isso mesmo eles segam.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the breath of His nostrils they are destroyed.
9 Com o hálito de Deus perecem; e com o assopro da sua ira se consomem.
10 The roaring of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken.
10 Cessa o bramido do leão e a voz do leão feroz, e os dentes dos leõezinhos se quebram.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
11 Perece o leão, porque não há presa, e os filhos da leoa andam dispersos.
12 Now a word was brought to me by stealth, and my ear received a whisper of it.
12 Uma palavra se me disse em segredo; e os meus ouvidos perceberam um sussurro dela.
13 In the uncertainties from the visions of the night, when a man falls into deep sleep,
13 Entre pensamentos de visões noturnas, quando profundo sono cai sobre os homens,
14 fear and trembling befell me, which made all my bones dread.
14 sobrevieram-me o espanto e o tremor, e todos os meus ossos estremeceram.
15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair on my flesh stood up.
15 Então, um espírito passou por diante de mim; fez-me arrepiar os cabelos do meu corpo;
16 It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes in silence; then I heard a voice saying:
16 parou ele, mas não lhe discerni a aparência; um vulto estava diante dos meus olhos; houve silêncio, e ouvi uma voz:
17 Is mortal man more righteous than God? Is a strong man more pure than his Maker?
17 Seria, porventura, o mortal justo diante de Deus? Seria, acaso, o homem puro diante do seu Criador?
18 Behold He puts no trust in His servants, and He charges His angels with error;
18 Eis que Deus não confia nos seus servos e aos seus anjos atribui imperfeições;
19 even more so those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the grass!
19 quanto mais àqueles que habitam em casas de barro, cujo fundamento está no pó, e são esmagados como a traça!
20 They are crushed from morning till evening; they perish forever, with no one regarding.
20 Nascem de manhã e à tarde são destruídos; perecem para sempre, sem que disso se faça caso.
21 Is not their own excellence within them removed? They die, even without wisdom.
21 Se se lhes corta o fio da vida, morrem e não atingem a sabedoria.
