1 Be not thou envious of wicked men, neither crave to be with them;
1 Não tenha inveja dos maus nem queira estar com eles,
2 For, violence, their heart muttereth, and, mischief, their lips do speak.
2 porque o coração deles planeja a violência, e os seus lábios falam para ferir. — 20 —
3 In wisdom, is a house builded, and, in understanding, is it established;
3 Com a sabedoria se constrói a casa, e com a inteligência ela se firma;
4 And, in knowledge, chambers are filled, with all acquisitions, costly and fair.
4 pelo conhecimento os seus cômodos se encherão de todo tipo de bens, preciosos e agradáveis. — 21 —
5 A wise man, is mighty, and, a man of knowledge, becometh alert in vigour.
5 Quem é sábio é forte, e aquele que tem conhecimento consolida a sua força.
6 Surely, with concerted measures, shalt thou make for thyself war, and, success, lieth in the greatness of the counsellor.
6 Porque com prudência você deve fazer a guerra; na multidão de conselheiros está a vitória. — 22 —
7 Unattainable to a foolish man, are the dictates of wisdom, in the gate, he openeth not his mouth.
7 A sabedoria é elevada demais para o insensato; no tribunal, ele não abre a boca. — 23 —
8 He that deviseth to do mischief, him, shall men call, a master of plots.
8 Quem só pensa em fazer o mal será chamado “mestre de intrigas”.
9 The purpose of folly, is sin, and, an abomination to mankind, is a buffoon.
9 Os planos do tolo são pecado, e o zombador é abominável às pessoas. — 24 —
10 Thou hast been slothful in the day of straitness, Strait, is thy strength.
10 Se você se mostra fraco no dia da angústia, é porque a sua força é pequena. — 25 —
11 Deliver thou such as are being led forth to death, and, them who are tottering to slaughter, oh that thou wouldst hold back!
11 Liberte os que estão sendo levados para a morte e salve os que cambaleiam ao ser levados para a matança.
12 Though thou say, Lo! we knew not this, Shall not, he that proveth hearts, himself, discern? And, he that formeth thy soul, himself, know? and bring back to a son of earth according to his deed?
12 Você poderá dizer: “Não sabíamos de nada!” Mas será que aquele que pesa os corações não o perceberá? Aquele que atenta para a sua alma não ficará sabendo? E não pagará ele a cada um segundo as suas obras? — 26 —
13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good,and droppings from the comb sweet to thy palate:
13 Meu filho, coma mel, porque é saudável, e o favo, porque é doce ao seu paladar.
14 Thus, take knowledge of wisdom, for thine own soul; If thou find it, then there is a future, and, thine expectation, shall not be cut off.
14 Saiba que assim é a sabedoria para a sua alma. Se você a encontrar, haverá um futuro, e a sua esperança não será frustrada. — 27 —
15 Do not lie in wait, thou lawless man, against the home of the righteous,neither destroy thou his place of rest;
15 Não espie a habitação do justo, ó perverso, nem destrua o lugar do seu repouso,
16 For, seven times, may the righteous fall and yet arise, but, lawless men, shall stumble into calamity.
16 porque sete vezes cairá o justo e se levantará; mas os perversos são derrubados pela calamidade. — 28 —
17 When thine enemy falleth, do not thou rejoice, and, when he stumbleth, let not thy heart exult:
17 Quando o seu inimigo cair, não se alegre, nem se regozije o seu coração quando ele tropeçar,
18 Lest Yahweh see it, and it be wicked in his eyes, and he turn away from him his anger.
18 para que o Senhor não veja isso e se desagrade, e desvie do inimigo a sua ira. — 29 —
19 Burn not with vexation against evil doers, be not envious of lawless men;
19 Não se irrite por causa dos malfeitores, nem tenha inveja dos ímpios,
20 For there shall be no future for the wicked, The lamp of the lawless, shall go out.
20 porque os maus não terão futuro, e a lâmpada dos ímpios se apagará. — 30 —
21 Revere thou Yahweh, my son, and the king, and, with the fickle, have thou no fellowship;
21 Meu filho, tema o não se meta com os revoltosos,
22 For, suddenly, shall arise their calamity; and, the misfortune of their years, who knoweth?
22 porque de repente serão destruídos, e a ruína que virá do e do rei, quem a conhecerá?
23 These things also, concern he wise, To take note of faces in judgment, is not good.
23 Estes também são provérbios dos sábios. Parcialidade no julgamento não é bom.
24 He that saith to the lawless man, Righteous, thou art, peoples shall denounce him, populations shall curse him;
24 Quem disser ao ímpio: “Você é justo” será amaldiçoado pelos povos e detestado pelas nações.
25 But, to reprovers, one should be pleasant, and, upon them, should come an excellent blessing:
25 Mas haverá bem-estar para os que repreenderem o ímpio, e sobre eles virão grandes bênçãos.
26 Lips, should one kiss with one who answereth in right words.
26 Como beijo nos lábios, assim é a resposta com palavras sinceras.
27 Prepare, in the open, thy work, and make ready, in the field, for thyself, Afterwards, shalt thou build thy house.
27 Cuide dos seus negócios lá fora, apronte a lavoura no campo e, depois, edifique a sua casa.
28 Do not become a needless witness against thy neighbour, so mightest thou open too wide thy lips:
28 Não testemunhe sem motivo contra o seu próximo, nem o engane com os seus lábios.
29 Do not sayAccording to what he hath done to me, so, will I do to him, I will repay every one according to his work.
29 Não diga: “Vou fazer com ele o mesmo que ele fez comigo; pagarei a cada um segundo as suas obras.”
30 By the field of the sluggard, I passed, and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense;
30 Passei pelo campo do preguiçoso e junto à vinha do homem sem juízo.
31 And lo! there had come up all over itthorns, there had covered the face thereofthistles, and, the stone fence thereof, had been thrown down.
31 Eis que tudo estava cheio de espinhos e coberto de urtigas; e o muro de pedra estava em ruínas.
32 So I observed it, for myself, I applied my heart, I lookedI accepted correction:
32 Ao contemplar aquilo, eu fiquei pensando; olhei, e tirei a seguinte lição:
33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest:
33 Um pouco de sono, um breve cochilo, braços cruzados para descansar,
34 So shall come in, as a highwayman, thy poverty, and, thy want, as one armed with a shield.
34 e a sua pobreza virá como um ladrão, a miséria atacará como um homem armado.
