1 Canst thou draw out the Crocodile with a fish-hook? Or, with a cord, canst thou fasten down his tongue?
1 Poderás tirar com anzol o leviatã, ou apertar-lhe a língua com uma corda?
2 Wilt thou put a rush-cord on his nose? or, with a thorn, wilt thou pierce his jaw?
2 Poderás meter-lhe uma corda de junco no nariz, ou com um gancho furar a sua queixada?
3 Will he multiply unto thee supplications, or will he speak unto thee softly?
3 Porventura te fará muitas súplicas, ou brandamente te falará?
4 Will he solemnise a covenant with thee? Wilt thou take him for a life-long servant?
4 Fará ele aliança contigo, ou o tomarás tu por servo para sempre?
5 Wilt thou sport with him, as with a little bird? Or wilt thou bind him, for thy maidens?
5 Brincarás com ele, como se fora um pássaro, ou o prenderás para tuas meninas?
6 Shall the companions bargain over him? or will they part him among the traders?
6 Farão os sócios de pesca tráfico dele, ou o dividirão entre os negociantes?
7 Wilt thou fill, with darts, his skin? or, with fish-spears, his head?
7 Poderás encher-lhe a pele de arpões, ou a cabeça de fisgas?
8 Lay thou upon him thy hand, remember the battleno more!
8 Põe a tua mão sobre ele; lembra-te da peleja; nunca mais o farás!
9 Lo! any hope of him, hath been found deceptive, Even at the sight of him, shall not one be overwhelmed?
9 Eis que é vã a esperança de apanhá-lo; pois não será um homem derrubado só ao vê-lo?
10 None so bold, that he will rouse him! Who then is he that, before me, can stand?
10 Ninguém há tão ousado, que se atreva a despertá-lo; quem, pois, é aquele que pode erguer-se diante de mim?
11 Who hath forestalled me, that I may repay him? Under all the heavens, mine it is!
11 Quem primeiro me deu a mim, para que eu haja de retribuir-lhe? Pois tudo quanto existe debaixo de todo céu é meu.
12 I will not pass by in silence his parts, or the matter of strength, or the grace of his armour.
12 Não me calarei a respeito dos seus membros, nem da sua grande força, nem da graça da sua estrutura.
13 Who hath removed his outer garment, through his double row of teeth, who would enter?
13 Quem lhe pode tirar o vestido exterior? Quem lhe penetrará a couraça dupla?
14 The doors of his face, who hath opened? The circles of his teeth, are a terror!
14 Quem jamais abriu as portas do seu rosto? Pois em roda dos seus dentes está o terror.
15 A pride, are his arched sides, closed up, with a firm seal;
15 As suas fortes escamas são o seu orgulho, cada uma fechada como por um selo apertado.
16 One to another, they join, and, air, cannot enter between them;
16 Uma à outra se chega tão perto, que nem o ar passa por entre elas.
17 Each to its fellow, they cleave, they grasp each other, and cannot be parted;
17 Umas às outras se ligam; tanto aderem entre si, que não se podem separar.
18 His sneezings, flash forth light, and, his eyes, are like the eyelashes of the dawn;
18 Os seus espirros fazem resplandecer a luz, e os seus olhos são como as pestanas da alva.
19 Out of his mouth, torches dart forth, sparks of fire, escape;
19 Da sua boca saem tochas; faíscas de fogo saltam dela.
20 Out of his nostrils, proceedeth smoke, like a blown pot and rushes;
20 Dos seus narizes procede fumaça, como de uma panela que ferve, e de juncos que ardem.
21 His breath, setteth coals ablaze, and, a flame, out of his mouth, proceedeth;
21 O seu hálito faz incender os carvões, e da sua boca sai uma chama.
22 In his neck, lodgeth strength, and, before him, danceth dismay;
22 No seu pescoço reside a força; e diante dele anda saltando o terror.
23 The dewlaps of his flesh, cleave together, hardened upon him, they cannot be moved;
23 Os tecidos da sua carne estão pegados entre si; ela é firme sobre ele, não se pode mover.
24 His heart, is hardened like a stone, yea hardened, like the nether millstone;
24 O seu coração é firme como uma pedra; sim, firme como a pedra inferior duma mó.
25 At his rising up, mighty men are afraid, by reason of terror, they are beside themselves:
25 Quando ele se levanta, os valentes são atemorizados, e por causa da consternação ficam fora de si.
26 As for him that assaileth him, the sword availeth not, spear, dart, or coat of mail:
26 Se alguém o atacar com a espada, essa não poderá penetrar; nem tampouco a lança, nem o dardo, nem o arpão.
27 He counteth iron as broken straw, and bronze as rotten wood:
27 Ele considera o ferro como palha, e o bronze como pau podre.
28 The arrow, will not make him flee, Into chaff, are sling-stones changed by him:
28 A seta não o poderá fazer fugir; para ele as pedras das fundas se tornam em restolho.
29 As a straw, is a club accounted, and he laugheth at the whir of the javelin;
29 Os bastões são reputados como juncos, e ele se ri do brandir da lança.
30 His underparts, are points of potsherd, a pointed threshing roller spreadeth out upon the slime:
30 Debaixo do seu ventre há pontas agudas; ele se estende como um trilho sobre o lodo.
31 He causeth to boil, as a cauldron, the raging deep, the sea, he maketh like a brewing vessel:
31 As profundezas faz ferver, como uma panela; torna o mar como uma vasilha de ungüento.
32 After him, he lighteth up a path, one might think the resounding deep to be hoary!
32 Após si deixa uma vereda luminosa; parece o abismo tornado em brancura de cãs.
33 There is notupon the dusthis like, that hath been made to be without fear;
33 Na terra não há coisa que se lhe possa comparar; pois foi feito para estar sem pavor.
34 Every thing lofty, he beholdeth, he, is king over all ravenous beasts.
34 Ele vê tudo o que é alto; é rei sobre todos os filhos da soberba.
