1 Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 Unto GOD, can a man act as friend? Surely a discreet man befriendeth himself!
2 Pode o homem ser útil a Deus? O sábio só é útil a si mesmo.
3 Is it a pleasure to the Almighty, that thou shouldst be righteous? or any profit, that thou shouldst be blameless in thy ways?
3 De que serve ao Todo-poderoso que tu sejas justo? Tem ele interesse que teu proceder seja íntegro?
4 Is it, for thy reverence, that he will accuse thee? will enter with thee into judgment?
4 É por causa de tua piedade que ele te pune, e entra contigo em juízo?
5 Is not, thy wickedness, great? and, without end, thine iniquities?
5 Não é enorme a tua malícia, e não são inumeráveis as tuas iniqüidades?
6 Surely then hast been wont to put thy brother in pledge, for nothing, and, the garments of the ill-clad, hast thou stripped off:
6 Sem causa tomaste penhores a teus irmãos, despojaste de suas vestes os miseráveis;
7 No waterto the weary, hast thou given to drink, and, from the hungry, thou hast withheld broad:
7 não davas água ao sedento, recusavas o pão ao esfomeado.
8 A man of might, to him, pertaineth the land, and, the favorite, dwelleth therein:
8 A terra era do mais forte, e o protegido é que nela se estabelecia.
9 Widows, thou hast sent away empty, and, the arms of the fatherless, thou dost crush.
9 Despedias as viúvas com as mãos vazias, quebravas os braços dos órfãos.
10 For this cause, round about thee, are snares, and a dread startleth thee suddenly;
10 Eis por que estás cercado de laços, e os terrores súbitos te amedrontam.
11 Or darknessthou canst not see, and, a flood of waters, covereth thee.
11 A luz obscureceu-se; já não vês nada; e o dilúvio águas te engole.
12 Is not, GOD, the height of the heavens? Behold, then, the head of the stars, that they are high.
12 Não está Deus nas alturas dos céus? Vê a cabeça das estrelas como está alta!
13 Wilt thou say then, What doth GOD know? Out through a thick cloud, can he judge?
13 E dizes: Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da nuvem opaca?
14 Dark clouds, are a veil to him, and he cannot see, or, the vault of the heavens, doth he walk?
14 As nuvens formam um véu que o impede de ver; ele passeia pela abóbada do céu.
15 The path of the ancient time, wilt thou mark, which the men of iniquity trod?
15 Segues, pois, rotas antigas por onde andavam os homens iníquos
16 Who were snatched away before the time, and, a stream, washed away their foundation?
16 que foram arrebatados antes do tempo, e cujos fundamentos foram arrastados com as águas,
17 Who had been saying unto GOD, Depart from us! andWhat can the Almighty do for himself?
17 e que diziam a Deus: Retira-te de nós, que poderia fazer-nos o Todo-poderoso?
18 Yet, he, had filled their houses with good! The counsel of the lawless, then, is far from me:
18 Foi ele, entretanto, que lhes cumulou de bens as casas; - longe de mim os conselhos dos maus! -
19 The righteous shall see and rejoice, and, the innocent, shall laugh them to scorn:
19 Vendo-os, os justos se alegram, e o inocente zomba deles:
20 If our assailants do not vanish, then, their abundance, a fire consumeth!
20 Nossos inimigos estão aniquilados, e o fogo devorou-lhes as riquezas!
21 Shew thyself to be one with himI pray theeand prosper, thereby, shall there come on thee blessing.
21 Reconcilia-te, pois, com {Deus} e faz as pazes com ele, é assim que te será de novo dada a felicidade;
22 Accept, I beseech thee, from his mouthinstruction,and lay up his sayings in thy heart.
22 aceita a instrução de sua boca, e põe suas palavras em teu coração.
23 If thou return unto the Almighty and submit thyself, if thou far remove perversity from thy tent,
23 Se te voltares humildemente para o Todo-poderoso, se afastares a iniqüidade de tua tenda,
24 Then lay up, in the dust, precious ore, and, among the stones of the torrent-beds, fine gold:
24 se atirares as barras de ouro ao pó, e o ouro de Ofir entre os pedregulhos da torrente,
25 So shall, the Almighty, become, thy precious ores, yea glittering silver unto thee!
25 o Todo-poderoso será teu ouro e um monte de prata para ti.
26 For, then, in the Almighty, shalt thou take exquisite delight, and shalt lift upunto GODthy face;
26 Então farás do Todo-poderoso as tuas delícias, e levantarás teu rosto a Deus.
27 Thou shalt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and, thy vows, shalt thou pay;
27 Tu lhe rogarás, e ele te ouvirá, e cumprirás os teus votos:
28 And thou shalt decree a purpose, and it shall be fulfilled unto thee, and, upon thy ways, shall have shone a light;
28 formarás os teus projetos, que terão feliz êxito, e a luz brilhará em tuas veredas.
29 When men cast themselves down, then thou shalt say: Up! And, him that is of downcast eyes, shall he save;
29 Pois Deus abaixa o altivo e o orgulhoso, mas socorre aquele que abaixa os olhos.
30 He shall deliver the innocent, and thou shalt escape by the pureness of thy hands.
30 Salva o inocente, o qual é libertado pela pureza de suas mãos.
