1 Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
1 Então respondeu Elifaz, o temanita:
2 Unto GOD, can a man act as friend? Surely a discreet man befriendeth himself!
2 Pode o homem ser de algum proveito a Deus? Antes a si mesmo é que o prudente será proveitoso.
3 Is it a pleasure to the Almighty, that thou shouldst be righteous? or any profit, that thou shouldst be blameless in thy ways?
3 Tem o Todo-Poderoso prazer em que tu sejas justo, ou lucro em que tu faças perfeitos os teus caminhos?
4 Is it, for thy reverence, that he will accuse thee? will enter with thee into judgment?
4 É por causa da tua reverência que te repreende, ou que entra contigo em juízo?
5 Is not, thy wickedness, great? and, without end, thine iniquities?
5 Não é grande a tua malícia, e sem termo as tuas iniqüidades?
6 Surely then hast been wont to put thy brother in pledge, for nothing, and, the garments of the ill-clad, hast thou stripped off:
6 Pois sem causa tomaste penhores a teus irmãos e aos nus despojaste dos vestidos.
7 No waterto the weary, hast thou given to drink, and, from the hungry, thou hast withheld broad:
7 Não deste ao cansado água a beber, e ao faminto retiveste o pão.
8 A man of might, to him, pertaineth the land, and, the favorite, dwelleth therein:
8 Mas ao poderoso pertencia a terra, e o homem acatado habitava nela.
9 Widows, thou hast sent away empty, and, the arms of the fatherless, thou dost crush.
9 Despediste vazias as viúvas, e os braços dos órfãos foram quebrados.
10 For this cause, round about thee, are snares, and a dread startleth thee suddenly;
10 Por isso é que estás cercado de laços, e te perturba um pavor repentino,
11 Or darknessthou canst not see, and, a flood of waters, covereth thee.
11 ou trevas de modo que nada podes ver, e a inundação de águas te cobre.
12 Is not, GOD, the height of the heavens? Behold, then, the head of the stars, that they are high.
12 Não está Deus na altura do céu? Olha para as mais altas estrelas, quão elevadas estão!
13 Wilt thou say then, What doth GOD know? Out through a thick cloud, can he judge?
13 E dizes: Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da escuridão?
14 Dark clouds, are a veil to him, and he cannot see, or, the vault of the heavens, doth he walk?
14 Grossas nuvens o encobrem, de modo que não pode ver; e ele passeia em volta da abóbada do céu.
15 The path of the ancient time, wilt thou mark, which the men of iniquity trod?
15 Queres seguir a vereda antiga, que pisaram os homens iníquos?
16 Who were snatched away before the time, and, a stream, washed away their foundation?
16 Os quais foram arrebatados antes do seu tempo; e o seu fundamento se derramou qual um rio.
17 Who had been saying unto GOD, Depart from us! andWhat can the Almighty do for himself?
17 Diziam a Deus: retira-te de nós; e ainda: Que é que o Todo-Poderoso nos pode fazer?
18 Yet, he, had filled their houses with good! The counsel of the lawless, then, is far from me:
18 Contudo ele encheu de bens as suas casas. Mas longe de mim estejam os conselhos dos ímpios!
19 The righteous shall see and rejoice, and, the innocent, shall laugh them to scorn:
19 Os justos o vêem, e se alegram: e os inocentes escarnecem deles,
20 If our assailants do not vanish, then, their abundance, a fire consumeth!
20 dizendo: Na verdade são exterminados os nossos adversários, e o fogo consumiu o que deixaram.
21 Shew thyself to be one with himI pray theeand prosper, thereby, shall there come on thee blessing.
21 Apega-te, pois, a Deus, e tem paz, e assim te sobrevirá o bem.
22 Accept, I beseech thee, from his mouthinstruction,and lay up his sayings in thy heart.
22 Aceita, peço-te, a lei da sua boca, e põe as suas palavras no teu coração.
23 If thou return unto the Almighty and submit thyself, if thou far remove perversity from thy tent,
23 Se te voltares para o Todo-Poderoso, serás edificado; se lançares a iniqüidade longe da tua tenda,
24 Then lay up, in the dust, precious ore, and, among the stones of the torrent-beds, fine gold:
24 e deitares o teu tesouro no pó, e o ouro de Ofir entre as pedras dos ribeiros,
25 So shall, the Almighty, become, thy precious ores, yea glittering silver unto thee!
25 então o Todo-Poderoso será o teu tesouro, e a tua prata preciosa.
26 For, then, in the Almighty, shalt thou take exquisite delight, and shalt lift upunto GODthy face;
26 Pois então te deleitarás no Todo-Poderoso, e levantarás o teu rosto para Deus.
27 Thou shalt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and, thy vows, shalt thou pay;
27 Tu orarás a ele, e ele te ouvirá; e pagarás os teus votos.
28 And thou shalt decree a purpose, and it shall be fulfilled unto thee, and, upon thy ways, shall have shone a light;
28 Também determinarás algum negócio, e ser-te-á firme, e a luz brilhará em teus caminhos.
29 When men cast themselves down, then thou shalt say: Up! And, him that is of downcast eyes, shall he save;
29 Quando te abaterem, dirás: haja exaltação! E Deus salvará ao humilde.
30 He shall deliver the innocent, and thou shalt escape by the pureness of thy hands.
30 E livrará até o que não é inocente, que será libertado pela pureza de tuas mãos.
