1 Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
1 Então Elifaz, de Temã, respondeu:
2 Unto GOD, can a man act as friend? Surely a discreet man befriendeth himself!
2 “Pode alguém fazer algo para ajudar a Deus? Pode alguém, ainda que sábio, lhe ser útil?
3 Is it a pleasure to the Almighty, that thou shouldst be righteous? or any profit, that thou shouldst be blameless in thy ways?
3 Que vantagem há para o Todo-poderoso em você ser justo? Ele ganharia alguma coisa se você fosse perfeito?
4 Is it, for thy reverence, that he will accuse thee? will enter with thee into judgment?
4 É por causa de seu temor que ele o acusa e traz juízo contra você?
5 Is not, thy wickedness, great? and, without end, thine iniquities?
5 Não! É por causa de sua perversidade; seus pecados não têm limites!
6 Surely then hast been wont to put thy brother in pledge, for nothing, and, the garments of the ill-clad, hast thou stripped off:
6 “Por certo você emprestou dinheiro a seu amigo e exigiu roupas dele como garantia; sim, você o deixou sem ter o que vestir.
7 No waterto the weary, hast thou given to drink, and, from the hungry, thou hast withheld broad:
7 Recusou-se a dar água ao sedento e comida ao faminto.
8 A man of might, to him, pertaineth the land, and, the favorite, dwelleth therein:
8 Pensou que a terra pertencia aos poderosos e que somente os privilegiados tinham direito a ela.
9 Widows, thou hast sent away empty, and, the arms of the fatherless, thou dost crush.
9 Mandou a viúva embora de mãos vazias e acabou com as esperanças dos órfãos.
10 For this cause, round about thee, are snares, and a dread startleth thee suddenly;
10 Por isso está cercado de armadilhas e estremece com temores repentinos.
11 Or darknessthou canst not see, and, a flood of waters, covereth thee.
11 Por isso está em trevas e não consegue ver, e ondas de águas o cobrem.
12 Is not, GOD, the height of the heavens? Behold, then, the head of the stars, that they are high.
12 “Deus é grande, mais alto que os céus, mais alto que as estrelas mais distantes.
13 Wilt thou say then, What doth GOD know? Out through a thick cloud, can he judge?
13 Você, porém, responde: ‘Por isso Deus não vê o que faço! Como pode julgar através da densa escuridão?
14 Dark clouds, are a veil to him, and he cannot see, or, the vault of the heavens, doth he walk?
14 Nuvens espessas se movem ao seu redor, e ele não pode nos ver; está lá no alto, caminhando pela abóbada do céu!’.
15 The path of the ancient time, wilt thou mark, which the men of iniquity trod?
15 “Você continuará nos velhos caminhos, nos quais sempre andaram os perversos?
16 Who were snatched away before the time, and, a stream, washed away their foundation?
16 Eles foram levados embora em tenra idade; os alicerces de sua vida foram arrastados pela correnteza.
17 Who had been saying unto GOD, Depart from us! andWhat can the Almighty do for himself?
17 Pois disseram a Deus: ‘Deixa-nos em paz! O que o Todo-poderoso pode fazer conosco?’.
18 Yet, he, had filled their houses with good! The counsel of the lawless, then, is far from me:
18 E, no entanto, foi ele que lhes encheu o lar de coisas boas; por isso quero distância desse modo de pensar.
19 The righteous shall see and rejoice, and, the innocent, shall laugh them to scorn:
19 “Os justos se alegrarão ao ver a destruição dos perversos, e, com desprezo, os inocentes zombarão deles.
20 If our assailants do not vanish, then, their abundance, a fire consumeth!
20 Dirão: ‘Vejam, nossos inimigos foram destruídos, e suas riquezas, consumidas pelo fogo’.
21 Shew thyself to be one with himI pray theeand prosper, thereby, shall there come on thee blessing.
21 “Sujeite-se a Deus, e terá paz; então as coisas lhe irão bem.
22 Accept, I beseech thee, from his mouthinstruction,and lay up his sayings in thy heart.
22 Ouça as instruções de Deus e guarde-as no coração.
23 If thou return unto the Almighty and submit thyself, if thou far remove perversity from thy tent,
23 Se voltar para o Todo-poderoso, será restaurado; portanto, coloque sua vida em ordem.
24 Then lay up, in the dust, precious ore, and, among the stones of the torrent-beds, fine gold:
24 Se abrir mão de sua cobiça por dinheiro e lançar no rio seu ouro precioso,
25 So shall, the Almighty, become, thy precious ores, yea glittering silver unto thee!
25 o Todo-poderoso será seu tesouro; ele será sua prata de grande valor!
26 For, then, in the Almighty, shalt thou take exquisite delight, and shalt lift upunto GODthy face;
26 “Então você se alegrará no Todo-poderoso e levantará os olhos para ele.
27 Thou shalt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and, thy vows, shalt thou pay;
27 Orará a Deus, e ele o ouvirá, e você cumprirá seus votos.
28 And thou shalt decree a purpose, and it shall be fulfilled unto thee, and, upon thy ways, shall have shone a light;
28 Será bem-sucedido em tudo que decidir fazer, e a luz brilhará em seu caminho.
29 When men cast themselves down, then thou shalt say: Up! And, him that is of downcast eyes, shall he save;
29 Se outros estiverem em dificuldade e você disser: ‘Ajuda-os’, Deus os salvará.
30 He shall deliver the innocent, and thou shalt escape by the pureness of thy hands.
30 Até mesmo pecadores serão resgatados; sim, serão resgatados porque você tem mãos puras”.
