1 Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
1 Então Elifaz, da região de Temã, em resposta disse:
2 Unto GOD, can a man act as friend? Surely a discreet man befriendeth himself!
2 “Será que uma pessoa, por mais sábia que seja, poderia ser útil para Deus?
3 Is it a pleasure to the Almighty, that thou shouldst be righteous? or any profit, that thou shouldst be blameless in thy ways?
3 Será que interessa ao Todo-Poderoso que você seja honesto? Que lucro tem ele se você é correto em todas as coisas?
4 Is it, for thy reverence, that he will accuse thee? will enter with thee into judgment?
4 Se ele o castiga e o chama para prestar contas, não é porque você o adora com todo o respeito,
5 Is not, thy wickedness, great? and, without end, thine iniquities?
5 mas sim porque cometeu muitos pecados, e as suas maldades não têm conta.
6 Surely then hast been wont to put thy brother in pledge, for nothing, and, the garments of the ill-clad, hast thou stripped off:
6 Como garantia de um pequeno empréstimo, você ficava com as roupas dos seus patrícios e assim os deixava nus.
7 No waterto the weary, hast thou given to drink, and, from the hungry, thou hast withheld broad:
7 Você não dava água para as pessoas cansadas nem comida aos que tinham fome.
8 A man of might, to him, pertaineth the land, and, the favorite, dwelleth therein:
8 Você usou a sua posição e o seu poder para se tornar o dono da terra.
9 Widows, thou hast sent away empty, and, the arms of the fatherless, thou dost crush.
9 Você roubou e maltratou os órfãos e nunca ajudou as viúvas.
10 For this cause, round about thee, are snares, and a dread startleth thee suddenly;
10 Por isso, agora você está cercado de perigos, e, de repente, o medo toma conta de você.
11 Or darknessthou canst not see, and, a flood of waters, covereth thee.
11 A escuridão é tanta, que você não enxerga nada, e uma enchente o arrasta.
12 Is not, GOD, the height of the heavens? Behold, then, the head of the stars, that they are high.
12 “Deus está nas alturas do céu; ele olha para baixo e vê as estrelas, embora elas estejam lá no alto.
13 Wilt thou say then, What doth GOD know? Out through a thick cloud, can he judge?
13 Mas você pergunta: ‘Será que Deus sabe alguma coisa? As nuvens escuras ficam no meio; como é que ele pode nos julgar?’
14 Dark clouds, are a veil to him, and he cannot see, or, the vault of the heavens, doth he walk?
14 Jó, você acha que as grossas nuvens não deixam que Deus nos veja, quando ele está passeando pelo céu?
15 The path of the ancient time, wilt thou mark, which the men of iniquity trod?
15 “Será que você quer andar nos caminhos que os maus têm seguido desde os tempos antigos?
16 Who were snatched away before the time, and, a stream, washed away their foundation?
16 Eles morreram de repente, como se fossem levados por uma enchente.
17 Who had been saying unto GOD, Depart from us! andWhat can the Almighty do for himself?
17 A Deus eles diziam: ‘Deixa-nos em paz!’ E comentavam: ‘O que pode o Todo-Poderoso fazer em nosso favor?’
18 Yet, he, had filled their houses with good! The counsel of the lawless, then, is far from me:
18 Foi Deus quem encheu de coisas boas as casas dos maus, porém eu não quero pensar como eles.
19 The righteous shall see and rejoice, and, the innocent, shall laugh them to scorn:
19 As pessoas honestas ficam alegres, e as corretas riem,
20 If our assailants do not vanish, then, their abundance, a fire consumeth!
20 ao verem que as riquezas dos maus são destruídas e que as sobras são devoradas pelo fogo.
21 Shew thyself to be one with himI pray theeand prosper, thereby, shall there come on thee blessing.
21 “Jó, faça as pazes com Deus, deixe de tratá-lo como inimigo, e assim ele dará a você tudo o que há de bom.
22 Accept, I beseech thee, from his mouthinstruction,and lay up his sayings in thy heart.
22 Deixe que Deus o ensine e guarde as palavras dele no seu coração.
23 If thou return unto the Almighty and submit thyself, if thou far remove perversity from thy tent,
23 Se você voltar para o Todo-Poderoso e se humilhar, se você acabar com a maldade que há na sua casa,
24 Then lay up, in the dust, precious ore, and, among the stones of the torrent-beds, fine gold:
24 se o ouro mais precioso não tiver valor para você e for como o pó ou as pedrinhas do ribeirão,
25 So shall, the Almighty, become, thy precious ores, yea glittering silver unto thee!
25 então o Todo-Poderoso será o seu ouro puro, será a sua prata mais preciosa.
26 For, then, in the Almighty, shalt thou take exquisite delight, and shalt lift upunto GODthy face;
26 Ele será a sua alegria, e você poderá olhar para ele com confiança.
27 Thou shalt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and, thy vows, shalt thou pay;
27 Ele ouvirá as suas orações, e você lhe dará o que prometer.
28 And thou shalt decree a purpose, and it shall be fulfilled unto thee, and, upon thy ways, shall have shone a light;
28 Tudo o que você fizer dará certo, e a luz brilhará no seu caminho.
29 When men cast themselves down, then thou shalt say: Up! And, him that is of downcast eyes, shall he save;
29 Deus rebaixa os orgulhosos, mas salva os humildes.
30 He shall deliver the innocent, and thou shalt escape by the pureness of thy hands.
30 Ele o salvará se você for inocente, se for correto em tudo o que fizer.”
