1 Then responded Job, and said:
1 Então Jó respondeu:
2 Hear ye patiently my words, and let this be your consolation:
2 Ouvi atentamente as minhas palavras; seja isto a vossa consolação.
3 Suffer me, that, I, may speak, and, after I have spoken, thou canst mock!
3 Sofrei-me, e eu falarei; e, havendo eu falado, zombai.
4 Did, I, unto man, make my complaint? Wherefore, then, should my spirit not be impatient?
4 É porventura do homem que eu me queixo? Mas, ainda que assim fosse, não teria motivo de me impacientar?
5 Turn round to me, and be astonished, and lay hand on mouth!
5 Olhai para mim, e pasmai, e ponde a mão sobre a boca.
6 When I call to mind, then am I dismayed, and there seizeth my flesh a shuddering:
6 Quando me lembro disto, me perturbo, e a minha carne estremece de horror.
7 Wherefore do, lawless men, live, advance in years, even wax mighty in power?
7 Por que razão vivem os ímpios, envelhecem, e ainda se robustecem em poder?
8 Their seed, is established in their sight, along with them, yea their offspring, before their eyes;
8 Os seus filhos se estabelecem à vista deles, e os seus descendentes perante os seus olhos.
9 Their houses, are at peace, without dread, neither is, the rod of GOD, upon them;
9 As suas casas estão em paz, sem temor, e a vara de Deus não está sobre eles.
10 His bull, covereth, and causeth not aversion, His cow safely calveth, and casteth not her young;
10 O seu touro gera, e não falha; pare a sua vaca, e não aborta.
11 They send forthlike a flocktheir young ones, and, their children, skip about for joy;
11 Eles fazem sair os seus pequeninos, como a um rebanho, e suas crianças andam saltando.
12 They rejoice aloud as timbrel and lyre, and make merry to the sound of the pipe;
12 Levantam a voz, ao som do tamboril e da harpa, e regozijam-se ao som da flauta.
13 They complete, in prosperity, their days, and, in a moment to hades, they sink down.
13 Na prosperidade passam os seus dias, e num momento descem ao Seol.
14 Yet they said unto GOD, Depart from us, and, In the knowledge of thy ways, find we no pleasure.
14 Eles dizem a Deus: retira-te de nós, pois não desejamos ter conhecimento dos teus caminhos.
15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? Or what shall we profit, that we should urge him?
15 Que é o Todo-Poderoso, para que nós o sirvamos? E que nos aproveitará, se lhe fizermos orações?
16 Lo! not in their own hand, is their welfare, The counsel of lawless men, is far from me!
16 Vede, porém, que eles não têm na mão a prosperidade; esteja longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios!
17 How oft, the lamp of the lawless, goeth out, and their calamity, cometh upon them, Sorrows, apportioneth he in his anger;
17 Quantas vezes sucede que se apague a lâmpada dos ímpios? que lhes sobrevenha a sua destruição? que Deus na sua ira lhes reparta dores?
18 They become as straw before the wind, and as chaff, which the storm stealeth away.
18 que eles sejam como a palha diante do vento, e como a pragana, que o redemoinho arrebata?
19 Shall, GOD, reserve, for his children, his sorrow? Let him recompense him so that he may know it;
19 Deus, dizeis vós, reserva a iniqüidade do pai para seus filhos, mas é a ele mesmo que Deus deveria punir, para que o conheça.
20 His own eyes, shall see his misfortune, and, the wrath of the Almighty, shall he drink.
20 Vejam os seus próprios olhos a sua ruína, e beba ele do furor do Todo-Poderoso.
21 For what shall be his pleasure in his house after him, when, the number of his months, is cut in twain?
21 Pois, que lhe importa a sua casa depois de morto, quando lhe for cortado o número dos seus meses?
22 Is it, to GOD, one can teach knowledge, seeing that, he, shall judge, them who are on high?
22 Acaso se ensinará ciência a Deus, a ele que julga os excelsos?
23 This, man dieth, in the very perfection of his prosperity, wholly tranquil and secure;
23 Um morre em plena prosperidade, inteiramente sossegado e tranqüilo;
24 His veins, are filled with nourishment, and, the marrow of his bones, is fresh;
24 com os seus baldes cheios de leite, e a medula dos seus ossos umedecida.
25 Whereas, this other man, dieth, in bitterness of soul, and hath never tasted good fortune:
25 Outro, ao contrário, morre em amargura de alma, não havendo provado do bem.
26 Together, in the dust, they lie down, and, the worm, spreadeth a covering over them.
26 Juntamente jazem no pó, e os vermes os cobrem.
27 Lo! I know your plans, and the devices, wherewith ye would do me violence!
27 Eis que conheço os vossos pensamentos, e os maus intentos com que me fazeis injustiça.
28 For ye say, Where is the house of the noble-minded? And where the dwelling-tent of the lawless?
28 Pois dizeis: Onde está a casa do príncipe, e onde a tenda em que morava o ímpio?
29 Have ye not asked the passers-by in the way? And, their signs, can ye not recognise?
29 Porventura não perguntastes aos viandantes? e não aceitais o seu testemunho,
30 That, to the day of calamity, is the wicked reserved, to the day of indignant visitation, are they led.
30 de que o mau é preservado no dia da destruição, e poupado no dia do furor?
31 Who can declareto his facehis way? And, what, he, hath done, who shall recompense to him?
31 Quem acusará diante dele o seu caminho? e quem lhe dará o pago do que fez?
32 Yet, he, to the graves, is borne, and, over the tomb, one keepeth watch;
32 Ele é levado para a sepultura, e vigiam-lhe o túmulo.
33 Pleasant to him are the mounds of the torrent-bed,and, after him, doth every man march, as, before him, there were without number.
33 Os torrões do vale lhe são doces, e o seguirão todos os homens, como ele o fez aos inumeráveis que o precederam.
34 How then should ye comfort me with vanity, since, as for your replies, there lurketh,
34 Como, pois, me ofereceis consolações vãs, quando nas vossas respostas só resta falsidade?
