1 My son, if you serve as surety for your friend and you give your pledge to him,
1 Filho meu, se ficaste por fiador do teu companheiro e se te empenhaste ao estranho,
2 You are snared with the words of your mouth. You are captured by the words of your mouth!
2 estás enredado com o que dizem os teus lábios, estás preso com as palavras da tua boca.
3 You are now in the power of that person. Here is what you should do: Go and beg for permission to call off the agreement.
3 Agora, pois, faze isto, filho meu, e livra-te, pois caíste nas mãos do teu companheiro: vai, prostra-te e importuna o teu companheiro;
4 Do this before you fall asleep. Do not allow your eyes to close.
4 não dês sono aos teus olhos, nem repouso às tuas pálpebras;
5 Deliver your self like a deer from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler bird catcher.
5 livra-te, como a gazela, da mão do caçador e, como a ave, da mão do passarinheiro.
6 Go to the ant, you lazy person. Consider her ways and be wise!
6 Vai ter com a formiga, ó preguiçoso, considera os seus caminhos e sê sábio.
7 The lowly ant has no guide or overseer.
7 Não tendo ela chefe, nem oficial, nem comandante,
8 It prepares its food in the summer and gathers food at the harvest.
8 no estio, prepara o seu pão, na sega, ajunta o seu mantimento.
9 How long will you sleep, O lazy person? When will you arise from your sleep?
9 Ó preguiçoso, até quando ficarás deitado? Quando te levantarás do teu sono?
10 »A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest.
10 Um pouco para dormir, um pouco para tosquenejar, um pouco para encruzar os braços em repouso,
11 Your poverty comes like a traveler. Your need comes like an armed man.
11 assim sobrevirá a tua pobreza como um ladrão, e a tua necessidade, como um homem armado.
12 An ungodly person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth.
12 O homem de Belial, o homem vil, é o que anda com a perversidade na boca,
13 He winks with his eyes, he speaks with his feet, he teaches with his fingers.
13 acena com os olhos, arranha com os pés e faz sinais com os dedos.
14 Fraud is in his heart, he devises mischief continually; he sows discord.
14 No seu coração há perversidade; todo o tempo maquina o mal; anda semeando contendas.
15 His disaster will come suddenly. Suddenly he is broken beyond repair.
15 Pelo que a sua destruição virá repentinamente; subitamente, será quebrantado, sem que haja cura.
16 Jehovah hates these six things: Yes, seven are an abomination to him:
16 Seis coisas o Senhor aborrece, e a sétima a sua alma abomina:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
17 olhos altivos, língua mentirosa, mãos que derramam sangue inocente,
18 A heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that run quickly to badness,
18 coração que trama projetos iníquos, pés que se apressam a correr para o mal,
19 A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brothers.
19 testemunha falsa que profere mentiras e o que semeia contendas entre irmãos.
20 My son, obey your father's command, and do not abandon the law of your mother:
20 Filho meu, guarda o mandamento de teu pai e não deixes a instrução de tua mãe;
21 Constantly bind them upon your heart, and tie them about your neck.
21 ata-os perpetuamente ao teu coração, pendura-os ao pescoço.
22 When you go, they will lead you; when you sleep they will watch over you and when you awake, they will talk to you.
22 Quando caminhares, isso te guiará; quando te deitares, te guardará; quando acordares, falará contigo.
23 For the commandment is a lamp. The law is light. Reproofs for instruction are the way of life.
23 Porque o mandamento é lâmpada, e a instrução, luz; e as repreensões da disciplina são o caminho da vida;
24 This will keep you from the evil woman and from the smooth tongue of an adulterous woman.
24 para te guardarem da vil mulher e das lisonjas da mulher alheia.
25 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart. Do not let her attract you with her eyelids.
25 Não cobices no teu coração a sua formosura, nem te deixes prender com as suas olhadelas.
26 A prostitute will cost you your last crust of bread. An adulteress will cost you your life.
26 Por uma prostituta o máximo que se paga é um pedaço de pão, mas a adúltera anda à caça de vida preciosa.
27 Can a man have fire in his lap and his clothes not be burned?
27 Tomará alguém fogo no seio, sem que as suas vestes se incendeiem?
28 Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
28 Ou andará alguém sobre brasas, sem que se queimem os seus pés?
29 He who has sex with another mans wife; anyone who embraces her will not be innocent.
29 Assim será com o que se chegar à mulher do seu próximo; não ficará sem castigo todo aquele que a tocar.
30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
30 Não é certo que se despreza o ladrão, quando furta para saciar-se, tendo fome?
31 But if he is caught, he must repay sevenfold. He must give everything in his house.
31 Pois este, quando encontrado, pagará sete vezes tanto; entregará todos os bens de sua casa.
32 He who commits adultery with a woman lacks judgment and destroys himself.
32 O que adultera com uma mulher está fora de si; só mesmo quem quer arruinar-se é que pratica tal coisa.
33 He will get wounds and be dishonored. His shame will not be wiped away.
33 Achará açoites e infâmia, e o seu opróbrio nunca se apagará.
34 Jealousy enrages a man. He will not be spared in the day of vengeance.
34 Porque o ciúme excita o furor do marido; e não terá compaixão no dia da vingança.
35 He will not regard any ransom, nor will he be content when you give many gifts.
35 Não se contentará com o resgate, nem aceitará presentes, ainda que sejam muitos.
