1 ELIPHAZ THE TEMANITE ANSWERED:
1 Então Elifaz, o temanita, respondeu e disse:
2 »Can a mortal man be of use to God? Can even the wisest be of service to him?
2 Pode um homem ter algum proveito para Deus, como aquele que é sábio pode ser proveitoso a si mesmo?
3 »Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous? Is it profitable to him if you make your ways blameless?
3 Tem o Todo-Poderoso algum prazer em que tu sejas justo; ou é ganho para ele que tu faças perfeitos os teus caminhos?
4 »Is it for your reverence that he reproves you, and enters into judgment with you?
4 Reprovar-te-á ele por medo de ti; entrará ele contigo em juízo?
5 »Is not your wickedness great? There is no end to your iniquities.
5 Não é grande a tua maldade, e tuas iniquidades infinitas?
6 »You have indeed exacted pledges from your family for no reason, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
6 Porque penhoraste a teu irmão por nada, e despojaste o nu de suas vestes.
7 »You have given no water to the weary to drink. You have withheld bread from the hungry.
7 Tu não deste água ao cansado para beber, e retiveste o pão ao faminto.
8 »The powerful possess the land, and the favored live in it.
8 Mas quanto ao homem poderoso, este teve a terra, e o homem honrado habitou nela.
9 »You have sent widows away empty-handed. You crush the arms of the orphans.
9 As viúvas despediste vazias, e os braços dos sem pai foram quebrados.
10 »Therefore snares are around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you!
10 Portanto, laços estão ao seu redor, e o medo repentino te perturba;
11 »There is darkness so you cannot see. A flood of water covers you.
11 ou trevas que não podes ver; e a abundância de águas te cobre.
12 »Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how eminent they are!
12 Não está Deus na altura do céu? E contempla a altura das estrelas; quão elevadas estão!
13 »So you say: What does God know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?
13 E tu dizes: Como sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da nuvem escura?
14 »Thick clouds enwrap him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the dome of the heavens.«
14 As nuvens espessas são um esconderijo para ele, que ele não vê; e ele anda pelo circuito do céu.
15 »Will you keep to the old way that the wicked have trod?
15 Marcaste tu o velho caminho pelo qual os homens perversos pisaram?
16 »They were snatched away before their time. Their foundation is washed away by flood.
16 Que foram cortados fora do tempo, cujo fundamento foi transbordado por uma enchente;
17 »They said to God: Leave us alone. They asked: What can the Almighty do to us?
17 que diziam a Deus: Retira-te de nós. E o que pode o Todo-Poderoso fazer por eles?
18 »Yet he filled their houses with good things. Yet the plans of the wicked are repugnant.
18 Ainda assim, ele encheu as suas casas de coisas boas; mas o conselho do perverso está longe de mim.
19 »The righteous see it and are glad and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
19 Os justos o veem, e se alegram; e os inocentes riem deles para escarnecerem.
20 »They say: Our adversaries are cut off and the fire consumed what they left.
20 Porquanto nossa subsistência não é cortada, mas o resto dela o fogo consome.
21 »Agree with God, and be at peace. In this way good will come to you.
21 Familiariza-te agora com ele, e fica em paz; assim o bem virá sobre ti.
22 »Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.
22 Recebe, peço-te, a lei da sua boca, e põe as suas palavras no teu coração.
23 »If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored. You must remove unrighteousness from your tents,
23 Se te voltares ao Todo-Poderoso, serás edificado; tu colocarás a iniquidade para longe de teus tabernáculos.
24 »If you treat gold like dust, and gold of Ophir like the stones of the torrent-bed,
24 Então acumularás ouro como pó, e o ouro de Ofir como as pedras dos ribeiros.
25 and if the Almighty is your gold and your precious silver,
25 Sim, o Todo-Poderoso será a tua defesa, e tu terás abundância de prata.
26 you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and lift up your face to God.
26 Porque então te deleitarás no Todo-Poderoso, e levantarás a tua face a Deus.
27 »You will pray to him and he will hear you! You will pay your vows.
27 Tu farás a tua oração a ele, e ele te ouvirá, e pagarás os teus votos.
28 »You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you. The light of Gods favor will shine on your ways.
28 Também decretarás uma coisa, e ela lhe será estabelecida, e a luz brilhará sobre os teus caminhos.
29 »When others are humiliated, you say it is pride for he saves the humble.
29 Quando os homens forem humilhados, então tu dirás: Há exaltação! E ele salvará a pessoa humilde.
30 »He will deliver even those who are guilty. They will escape because of the cleanness of your hands.«
30 E ele livrará a ilha do inocente; e ela é libertada pela pureza de tuas mãos.
