1 Then answered Job, and said,
1 Então em resposta Jó disse:
2 Truly I know that it is so: and how could a mortal be righteous before God?
2 “Eu sei muito bem que as coisas são assim. Mas como é que uma pessoa pode provar a Deus que ela está com a razão?
3 If he were desirous to enter into a contest with him, he could not give him one answer out of a thousand.
3 Quem se atreve a discutir com Deus? Ele pode fazer mil perguntas a que ninguém é capaz de responder.
4 He is wise of heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and escaped unscathed?
4 A sua sabedoria é profunda, e o seu poder é grande; quem pode desafiá-lo e vencer?
5 He it is who removeth mountains, and they know it not, yea, when he overturneth them in his anger;
5 Sem aviso ele muda de lugar os montes e na sua
6 Who shaketh the earth loose out of her place, that her pillars tremble;
6 Deus manda terremotos, e o chão treme; ele abala as colunas que sustentam a terra.
7 Who speaketh to the sun, and he shineth not, and around the stars he placeth a seal;
7 Deus dá ordem, e o sol não nasce; ele apaga a luz das estrelas.
8 Who spread out the heavens by himself alone, and treadeth upon the hillocks of the sea;
8 Deus sozinho estendeu o céu; ele pisou sobre as costas do Mar .
9 Who made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the chambers the south;
9 Deus criou as estrelas em grupos: a Ursa Maior, as Três-Marias e as Sete-Cabrinhas, e fez também as estrelas do Sul.
10 Who doth great things which are quite unsearchable, and wonders which are quite without number.
10 Deus faz coisas grandes e maravilhosas, e os seus milagres não têm fim.
11 Lo, were he to go past by me, I should not see him; and were he to pass along, I should not perceive him.
11 Deus passa perto de mim, e eu não vejo; ele vai andando, e eu não percebo.
12 Behold, were he to snatch aught away, who could hold him back? who would say unto him, What dost thou?
12 Se Deus quer ficar com alguma coisa, quem pode impedi-lo? Quem se atreve a perguntar: ‘O que estás fazendo?’
13 God will not withdraw his anger: beneath him sink down the helpers of the proud.
13 Deus não volta atrás na sua ira; a seus pés caem derrotados os aliados do monstro Raabe .
14 How much less then could I answer him, and select my words to contend with him?
14 “Quem sou eu, então, para responder a Deus? Onde vou achar palavras para discutir com ele?
15 Whom, were I even righteous, I could not answer? to him that condemneth me I could only make supplication.
15 Ainda que eu tivesse razão, eu não responderia. Ele é o meu juiz; só posso pedir misericórdia.
16 Or were I to call, and he would answer me, I could yet not believe that he would give ear unto my voice
16 Ainda que eu o chamasse ao tribunal, e ele se apresentasse, não acredito que ouviria o meu caso.
17 He that bruiseth me with his tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without a cause.
17 Deus me esmaga com uma tempestade e sem motivo aumenta as minhas feridas.
18 He suffereth me not to recover my breath; but feedeth me overmuch with bitter things.
18 Ele não me deixa nem respirar e enche de amargura a minha vida.
19 If it regard strength, lo, he is the powerful; and if justice, who will cite him for me to appear?
19 Farei uso da força? Ele é o forte. Chamarei Deus ao tribunal? E quem o obrigaria a comparecer?
20 If I were righteous even, my own mouth would condemn me: were I innocent, it would still prove me perverse.
20 Sou inocente e sincero, mas as minhas palavras me condenariam e me declarariam culpado.
21 I am innocent; I will not have regard for myself: I will despise my life.
21 Sou inocente, mas não me importo com isso; estou cansado de viver.
22 One thing is certain, therefore have I said it, The innocent and the wicked he bringeth to their end.
22 Para mim, é tudo a mesma coisa; por isso, digo que Deus destrói tanto os bons como os maus.
23 If a scourge should slay suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the guiltless.
23 Se, de repente, uma desgraça mata pessoas inocentes, Deus ri.
24 Is a land given up into the hand of the wicked? he covereth the faces of its judges: if this be not the truth, who is it then?
24 Deus entregou o mundo nas mãos dos maus e cobriu os olhos dos juízes com uma venda. E, se não foi Deus quem fez isso, então quem foi?
25 And my days pass swifter than a runner: they flee away, they see no happiness,
25 “Os meus dias correm mais depressa do que um atleta; eles fogem sem ter visto a felicidade.
26 They hasten along like pirate ships: like the eagle that stoopeth down upon his food.
26 A minha vida passa como um barco ligeiro, como uma águia quando se lança sobre um coelho.
27 If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my sorrowful countenance, and recover my cheerfulness:
27 Posso tentar esquecer as minhas queixas, posso deixar o meu ar triste e voltar a ser alegre,
28 O then would I be in dread of all my pains; I know that thou wilt not declare me innocent.
28 mas logo os meus sofrimentos me deixam apavorado, pois sei que Deus não acredita que eu seja inocente.
29 I must ever be guilty: why then should I fatigue myself for nought?
29 E, se ele acha que sou culpado, não adianta nada lutar.
30 If I were to wash myself in snowwater, to cleanse myself in the purity of my hands:
30 O sabão não pode lavar os meus pecados; o sabão mais forte não pode limpar o mal que cometi.
31 Even then wouldst thou plunge me in the ditch, that my own clothes would render me abhorred.
31 Deus me joga na lama, e até a minha roupa tem nojo de mim.
32 For he is not a man, like me, that I could answer him, that we should enter together into a contest.
32 Deus não é um ser humano, como eu, e por isso não posso responder-lhe, nem podemos resolver a nossa questão no tribunal.
33 There is no one who can decide between us, who could lay his hand upon us both.
33 Para nós dois não há um juiz que possa julgar a mim e a Deus.
34 Let him but remove from me his rod, and let not his dread terrify me:
34 Ó Deus, para de me castigar! Não me enchas de medo com os teus terrores!
35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; for the like I feel not within me.
35 Então eu falarei e não terei medo, pois a minha consciência não me acusa.
