1 Then did the Lord address Job out of the stormwind, and said,
1 Então, do meio de um redemoinho, o S enhor respondeu a Jó:
2 Who is this that casteth darkness on my counsel by words without knowledge?
2 “Quem é esse que questiona minha sabedoria com palavras tão ignorantes?
3 Do but gird up like a mighty man thy loins: and I will ask thee, and do thou inform me.
3 Prepare-se como um guerreiro, pois lhe farei algumas perguntas, e você me responderá.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? tell it, if thou hast any understanding of it.
4 “Onde você estava quando eu lancei os alicerces do mundo? Diga-me, já que sabe tanto.
5 Who fixed her measurements, if thou knowest it? or who stretched the measuringline over her?
5 Quem definiu suas dimensões e estendeu a linha de medir? Vamos, você deve saber.
6 Upon what are her foundationpillars placed at rest? or who laid her cornerstone:
6 O que sustenta seus alicerces e quem lançou sua pedra angular,
7 When altogether sang the morning stars in gladness, and shouted for joy all the sons of God?
7 enquanto as estrelas da manhã cantavam juntas, e os anjos
8 And who closed up with doors the sea, when, issuing forth, it came out of the deep bosom of the earth?
8 “Quem estabeleceu os limites do mar quando do ventre ele brotou,
9 When I made the clouds its garment, and thick fog its swaddlingcloth,
9 quando eu o vesti com nuvens e o envolvi em escuridão profunda?
10 And when I decreed for it my law, and set for it bars and doors,
10 Pois o contive atrás de portas com trancas, para delimitar seus litorais.
11 And said, Thus far mayest thou come, but no farther; and here shall be stayed thy strength in the pride of thy waves?
11 Disse: ‘Daqui não pode passar; aqui suas ondas orgulhosas devem parar!’.
12 Didst thou ever, in all thy days, command the morning; didst thou ever assign the morningdawn its place:
12 “Você alguma vez deu ordem para que a manhã aparecesse e fez o amanhecer se levantar no leste?
13 That it might lay hold of the ends of the earth, so that the wicked might be shaken out therefrom?
13 Fez a luz do dia se espalhar até os confins da terra, para acabar com a perversidade da noite?
14 She is changed as the sealingclay: and all things stand as though newly clad.
14 À medida que a luz se aproxima, a terra toma forma, como o barro sob um anel de selar; como uma veste, seus contornos se mostram.
15 And from the wicked is their light withdrawn, and the highraised arm is broken.
15 A luz incomoda os perversos e detém o braço levantado para cometer violência.
16 Didst thou ever penetrate as far as the springs of the sea? or wander through the bottom of the deep?
16 “Você explorou as nascentes do mar? Percorreu suas profundezas?
17 Were the gates of death ever laid open unto thee? or canst thou see the doors of the shadow of death?
17 Sabe onde ficam as portas da morte? Viu as portas da escuridão absoluta?
18 Hast thou a clear understanding of the breadth of the earth? Tell it, if thou knowest it all.
18 Tem ideia da extensão da terra? Responda-me, se é que você sabe!
19 Where is the way to the spot where the light dwelleth? and the darknesswhere is its place,
19 “De onde vem a luz, e para onde vai a escuridão?
20 That thou mightest take each to its boundary, and that thou mightest mark the pathways to its house?
20 Você é capaz de levar cada uma a seu lugar? Sabe como chegar lá?
21 Thou surely knowest it; because thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
21 Claro que sabe de tudo isso! Afinal, já havia nascido antes de tudo ser criado e tem muita experiência!
22 Didst thou ever enter into the treasuries of the snow? or canst thou see the treasuries of the hail,
22 “Você alguma vez visitou os depósitos de neve ou viu onde fica guardado o granizo?
23 Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of fight and battle?
23 Eu os reservo como armas para os tempos de angústia, para o dia de batalha e guerra.
24 Where is the way to the spot where the light divideth itself, where the east wind is scattered over the earth?
24 Onde os relâmpagos se dividem? De onde se dispersa o vento leste?
25 Who hath divided off watercourses for the overflowing rain, and a way for the lightning that is followed by thunders,
25 “Quem abriu um canal para as chuvas torrenciais? Quem definiu o percurso dos relâmpagos?
26 To bring rain on a land, void of men; on a wilderness wherein no son of earth is found;
26 Quem faz a chuva cair sobre a terra árida, no deserto, onde ninguém habita?
27 To satisfy waste and desolate lands; and to promote the growth of the tender grass?
27 Quem envia a chuva para saciar a terra seca e fazer brotar o capim novo?
28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
28 “Acaso a chuva tem pai? Quem gera o orvalho?
29 Out of whose womb cometh forth the ice? and the hoary frost of heavenwho giveth birth to it?
29 Quem é a mãe do gelo? Quem dá à luz a geada que vem do céu?
30 When like a stone the waters are congealed, and the face of the deep is bound in fetters?
30 Pois a água se transforma em gelo, duro como pedra, e a superfície das águas profundas se congela.
31 Canst thou bind together the chains of the Pleiades, or loosen the bands of Orion?
31 “Você é capaz de controlar as estrelas e amarrar o grupo das Plêiades ou afrouxar as cordas do Órion?
32 Canst thou bring forth the constellations of the zodiac, each in its season? or canst thou guide the Bear with its young?
32 Pode fazer aparecer no tempo exato as constelações, ou guiar a Ursa e seus filhotes pelo céu?
33 Knowest thou the laws of heaven? or dost thou appoint its rule on the earth?
33 Conhece as leis do universo? Pode usá-las para governar a terra?
34 Canst thou lift up to the clouds thy voice, that the abundance of waters may cover thee?
34 “Pode gritar para as nuvens e fazer chover?
35 Canst thou send out lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here are we?
35 Pode fazer os raios aparecerem e lhes dizer onde cair?
36 Who hath put wisdom in the dark clouds? or who hath given understanding to the bright meteors?
36 Quem dá intuição ao coração e instinto à mente?
37 Who ordaineth the skies with wisdom? or who emptieth out the bottles of heaven.
37 Quem é sábio o suficiente para contar todas as nuvens? Quem pode inclinar as vasilhas de água do céu,
38 When the dust is poured out as molten metal, and the clods are made to cleave fast together?
38 quando a terra está seca e o solo se endureceu em torrões?
39 Dost thou hunt for the lioness her prey? and suppliest thou the food for the young lions,
39 “Acaso você pode caçar a presa para a leoa e saciar a fome dos leõezinhos,
40 When they are couched in their lairs, rest in the thicket, lying in wait?
40 enquanto eles se agacham na toca ou ficam à espreita no mato?
41 Who provideth for the raven his provision? when his young ones cry unto God, and wander about for lack of food?
41 Quem providencia alimento para os corvos quando seus filhotes clamam a Deus e, famintos, andam de um lado para o outro?”
