1 And Job again took up his parable, and said:
1 Jó continuou a falar:
2 Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;
2 “Tenho saudade dos tempos que passaram, dos dias em que Deus cuidava de mim.
3 When His lamp shined above my head, and by His light I walked through darkness;
3 Ele iluminava o caminho à minha frente, e eu andava em segurança em meio à escuridão.
4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the converse of God was upon my tent;
4 Na flor de minha idade, a amizade de Deus estava presente em meu lar.
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were about me;
5 O Todo-poderoso ainda estava comigo, e eu tinha meus filhos ao redor.
6 When my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil!
6 Meus pés eram lavados em leite, e ribeiros de azeite corriam das rochas para mim.
7 When I went forth to the gate unto the city, when I prepared my seat in the broad place,
7 “Naquele tempo, eu ia até a porta da cidade e tomava meu lugar entre os líderes.
8 The young men saw me and hid themselves, and the aged rose up and stood;
8 Os jovens abriam caminho ao me ver, e até os idosos se punham em pé.
9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth;
9 As autoridades se calavam e colocavam a mão sobre a boca.
10 The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
10 Os mais altos oficiais da cidade faziam silêncio e refreavam a língua em sinal de respeito.
11 For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me;
11 “Todos que me ouviam me elogiavam, todos que me viam falavam bem de mim.
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him.
12 Pois eu auxiliava os pobres que pediam ajuda e os órfãos que precisavam de socorro.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
13 Os que estavam à beira da morte me abençoavam; eu trazia alegria ao coração das viúvas.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed itself with me; my justice was as a robe and a diadem.
14 Era honesto em tudo que fazia; a retidão me cobria como manto, e a justiça eu usava como turbante.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
15 Servia de olhos para os cegos e de pés para os aleijados.
16 I was a father to the needy; and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.
16 Era um pai para os pobres e defendia a causa dos estrangeiros.
17 And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.
17 Quebrava as mandíbulas dos ímpios e de seus dentes resgatava as vítimas.
18 Then I said: 'I shall die with my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the phoenix;
18 ‘Por certo morrerei rodeado por minha família’, pensava, ‘depois de uma vida longa e boa.
19 My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew shall lie all night upon my branch;
19 Pois sou como a árvore cujas raízes chegam até a água, cujos ramos são refrescados pelo orvalho.
20 My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow shall be renewed in my hand.'
20 Recebo sempre novas honras, e minha força vive renovada.’
21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel.
21 “Todos escutavam meus conselhos; ficavam em silêncio e esperavam que eu falasse.
22 After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
22 E, depois que eu falava, nada tinham a acrescentar, pois o que eu dizia os satisfazia.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
23 Esperavam minhas palavras como quem espera a chuva; bebiam-nas como chuva de primavera.
24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
24 Quando estavam desanimados, eu sorria para eles; valorizavam meu olhar de aprovação.
25 I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
25 Como um líder, eu lhes dizia o que fazer; vivia como rei entre suas tropas e consolava os que choravam.”
