1 I made a couenant with mine eyes: why then should I thinke on a mayde?
1 “Eu jurei que os meus olhos nunca haveriam de cobiçar uma virgem.
2 For what portion should I haue of God from aboue? and what inheritance of the Almightie from on hie?
2 Se eu tivesse quebrado o juramento, que recompensa Deus me daria, e como é que lá dos céus o Todo-Poderoso me abençoaria?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked and strange punishment to the workers of iniquitie?
3 Pois Deus manda a infelicidade e a desgraça para aqueles que só fazem o mal.
4 Doeth not he beholde my wayes and tell all my steps?
4 Deus sabe tudo o que eu faço; ele vê cada passo que dou.
5 If I haue walked in vanitie, or if my foote hath made haste to deceite,
5 “Juro que não tenho sido falso e que nunca procurei enganar os outros.
6 Let God weigh me in the iust balance, and he shall know mine vprightnes.
6 Que Deus me pese numa balança justa e ele ficará convencido de que sou inocente!
7 If my steppe hath turned out of the way, or mine heart hath walked after mine eye, or if any blot hath cleaued to mine handes,
7 “Se por acaso me desviei do caminho certo, se o meu coração foi levado pela cobiça dos olhos, se pequei, ficando com qualquer coisa que pertence a outra pessoa,
8 Let me sowe, and let another eate: yea, let my plantes be rooted out.
8 então que outros comam o que eu semeei, ou que as minhas plantações sejam destruídas.
9 If mine heart hath bene deceiued by a woman, or if I haue layde wayte at the doore of my neighbour,
9 Se o meu coração alguma vez foi seduzido pela mulher do meu vizinho, e se fiquei escondido, espiando a porta da casa dela,
10 Let my wife grinde vnto another man, and let other men bow downe vpon her:
10 então que a minha mulher se torne escrava de outro, e que outros durmam com ela.
11 For this is a wickednes, and iniquitie to bee condemned:
11 Se eu tivesse cometido esse crime horrível, o tribunal deveria me condenar.
12 Yea, this is a fire that shall deuoure to destruction, and which shall roote out al mine increase,
12 Esse pecado seria como um incêndio terrível, infernal, que destruiria tudo o que tenho.
13 If I did contemne the iudgement of my seruant, and of my mayde, when they did contend with me,
13 “Quando um empregado ou empregada reclamava contra mim, eu resolvia o assunto com justiça.
14 What then shall I do when God standeth vp? and when he shall visit me, what shall I answere?
14 Se eu não tivesse agido assim, que faria quando Deus me julgasse? Que responderia, quando ele pedisse conta dos meus atos?
15 He that hath made me in the wombe, hath he not made him? hath not he alone facioned vs in the wombe?
15 Pois o mesmo Deus que me criou, criou também os meus empregados; ele deu a vida tanto a mim como a eles.
16 If I restrained the poore of their desire, or haue caused the eyes of the widow to faile,
16 “Nunca deixei de ajudar os pobres, nem permiti que as viúvas chorassem de desespero.
17 Or haue eaten my morsels alone, and the fatherles hath not eaten thereof,
17 Nunca tomei sozinho as minhas refeições, mas sempre reparti a minha comida com os órfãos.
18 (For from my youth hee hath growen vp with me as with a father, and from my mothers wombe I haue bene a guide vnto her)
18 Eu os tratava como se fosse pai deles e sempre protegi as viúvas.
19 If I haue seene any perish for want of clothing, or any poore without couering,
19 Quando via alguém morrendo de frio por falta de roupa ou notava algum pobre que não tinha com que se cobrir,
20 If his loynes haue not blessed me, because he was warmed with the fleece of my sheepe,
20 eu lhe dava roupas quentes, feitas com a lã das minhas próprias ovelhas, e ele me agradecia do fundo do coração.
21 If I haue lift vp mine hande against the fatherlesse, when I saw that I might helpe him in the gate,
21 Se alguma vez fui violento com um órfão, sabendo que eu tinha o apoio dos juízes,
22 Let mine arme fal from my shoulder, and mine arme be broken from the bone.
22 então que os meus braços sejam quebrados, que sejam arrancados dos meus ombros.
23 For Gods punishment was fearefull vnto me, and I could not be deliuered from his highnes.
23 Eu nunca faria nenhuma dessas coisas, pois tenho pavor do castigo de Deus e não poderia enfrentar a sua presença
24 If I made gold mine hope, or haue sayd to the wedge of golde, Thou art my confidence,
24 “Jamais confiei no ouro; ele nunca foi a base da minha segurança.
25 If I reioyced because my substance was great, or because mine hand had gotten much,
25 Nunca me orgulhei de ter muitas riquezas, nem de ganhar muito dinheiro.
26 If I did behold the sunne, when it shined, or the moone, walking in her brightnes,
26 Tenho visto o sol brilhar e a lua caminhar em toda a sua beleza,
27 If mine heart did flatter me in secrete, or if my mouth did kisse mine hand,
27 porém nunca os adorei, nem em segredo, e não lhes atirei beijos com a mão.
28 (This also had bene an iniquitie to be condemned: for I had denied the God aboue)
28 Se tivesse cometido esse terrível pecado, eu teria sido infiel a Deus, que está lá em cima, e o tribunal deveria me condenar.
29 If I reioyced at his destruction that hated me, or was mooued to ioye when euill came vpon him,
29 “Jamais me alegrei com o sofrimento dos meus inimigos, nem fiquei contente se lhes acontecia alguma desgraça.
30 Neither haue I suffred my mouth to sinne, by wishing a curse vnto his soule.
30 E nunca fiz uma oração pedindo a Deus que matasse algum deles.
31 Did not the men of my Tabernacle say, Who shall giue vs of his flesh? we can not bee satisfied.
31 “Os empregados que trabalham para mim sabem que os meus convidados comem à vontade, do bom e do melhor.
32 The stranger did not lodge in the streete, but I opened my doores vnto him, that went by the way.
32 Nunca deixei um estrangeiro dormir na rua; os viajantes sempre se hospedaram na minha casa.
33 If I haue hid my sinne, as Adam, concealing mine iniquitie in my bosome,
33 Jamais procurei encobrir as minhas faltas, como fazem algumas pessoas, nem escondi no coração os meus pecados.
34 Though I could haue made afraid a great multitude, yet the most contemptible of the families did feare me: so I kept silence, and went not out of the doore.
34 Nunca tive medo daquilo que os outros poderiam dizer; não fiquei dentro de casa, calado, com receio de que zombassem de mim.
35 Oh that I had some to heare me! beholde my signe that the Almightie will witnesse for me: though mine aduersary should write a booke against me,
35 “Como gostaria que alguém me ouvisse! Aqui eu termino e assino a minha defesa; que o Todo-Poderoso me responda! Que o meu Adversário escreva a acusação,
36 Woulde not I take it vpon my shoulder, and binde it as a crowne vnto me?
36 e, com orgulho, eu a carregarei no ombro e a porei na cabeça como se fosse uma coroa!
37 I will tell him the nomber of my goings, and goe vnto him as to a prince.
37 Darei conta a Deus de todos os meus atos e na presença dele ficarei de cabeça erguida.
38 If my lande cry against me, or the furrowes thereof complayne together,
38 “As minhas terras nunca choraram, nem gritaram ao céu contra mim.
39 If I haue eaten the fruites thereof without siluer: or if I haue grieued the soules of the masters thereof,
39 Pois, se comi os seus frutos, sempre paguei os trabalhadores como devia e jamais deixei que morressem de fome.
40 Let thistles growe in steade of wheate, and cockle in the stead of Barley. The wordes of Iob are ended.
40 Se não estou dizendo a verdade, então que nas minhas terras cresçam espinhos em vez de trigo e mato em vez de Aqui terminam as palavras de Jó.
