1 My son, if thou hast become surety for another, If thou hast stricken hands for another,
1 Meu filho, se ficaste por fiador do teu próximo, se estendeste a mão a um estranho,
2 If thou hast become ensnared by the words of thy mouth, If thou hast been caught by the words of thy mouth,
2 se te ligaste com as palavras de teus lábios, se ficaste cativo com a tua própria linguagem,
3 Do this now, my son, and rescue thyself,—Since thou hast fallen into the hands of thy neighbor,—Go, prostrate thyself, and be urgent with thy neighbor!
3 faze, pois, meu filho, o que te digo: livra-te, pois caíste nas mãos do teu próximo; vai, apressa-te, solicita-o com instância,
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids;
4 não concedas sono aos teus olhos, nem repouso às tuas pálpebras.
5 Rescue thyself, as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
5 Salva-te como a gazela {do caçador}, e como o pássaro das mãos do que arma laços.
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard! Consider her ways, and be wise!
6 Vai, ó preguiçoso, ter com a formiga, observa seu proceder e torna-te sábio:
7 She hath no governor, Nor overseer, nor ruler;
7 ela não tem chefe, nem inspetor, nem mestre;
8 Yet she prepareth in the summer her food, She gathereth in the harvest her meat.
8 prepara no verão sua provisão, apanha no tempo da ceifa sua comida.
9 How long wilt thou lie in bed, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise from thy sleep?
9 Até quando, ó preguiçoso, dormirás? Quando te levantarás de teu sono?
10 “A little sleep,—a little slumber,—A little folding of the hands to rest:”
10 Um pouco para dormir, outro pouco para dormitar, outro pouco para cruzar as mãos no seu leito,
11 So shall thy poverty come upon thee like a robber, Yea, thy want, as an armed man!
11 e a indigência virá sobre ti como um ladrão; a pobreza, como um homem armado.
12 A worthless wretch is the unrighteous man, Who walketh with a deceitful mouth;
12 É um homem perverso, um iníquo aquele que caminha com falsidade na boca;
13 Who winketh with his eyes, Speaketh with his feet, And teacheth with his fingers.
13 pisca os olhos, bate com o pé, faz sinais com os dedos;
14 Fraud is in his heart; He deviseth mischief continually; He scattereth contentions.
14 só há perversidade em seu coração, não cessa de maquinar o mal, e de semear questões.
15 Therefore shall calamity come upon him suddenly; In a moment shall he be destroyed, and that without remedy;
15 Por isso, repentinamente, virá sua ruína, de improviso ficará irremediavelmente quebrantado.
16 These six things doth the LORD hate; Yea, seven are an abomination to him:
16 Seis coisas há que o Senhor odeia e uma sétima que lhe é uma abominação:
17 Lofty eyes, a false tongue, And hands which shed innocent blood;
17 olhos altivos, língua mentirosa, mãos que derramam sangue inocente,
18 A heart that contriveth wicked devices; Feet that are swift in running to mischief,
18 um coração que maquina projetos perversos, pés pressurosos em correr ao mal,
19 A false witness, that uttereth lies, And him that soweth discord among brethren.
19 um falso testemunho que profere mentiras e aquele que semeia discórdias entre irmãos.
20 Keep, O my son! the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the precepts of thy mother!
20 Guarda, filho meu, os preceitos de teu pai, não desprezes o ensinamento de tua mãe.
21 Bind them continually to thy heart, Tie them around thy neck!
21 Traze-os constantemente ligados ao teu coração e presos ao teu pescoço.
22 When thou goest forth, they shall guide thee; When thou sleepest, they shall watch over thee; And, when thou awakest, they shall talk with thee.
22 Servir-te-ão de guia ao caminhares, de guarda ao dormires e falarão contigo ao despertares,
23 For the commandment is a lamp, and instruction a light; Yea, the rebukes of correction lead to life.
23 porque o preceito é uma tocha, o ensinamento é uma luz, a correção e a disciplina são o caminho da vida,
24 They shall guard thee from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the unchaste woman.
24 para te preservar da mulher corrupta e da língua lisonjeira da estranha.
25 Desire not her beauty in thy heart, Nor let her catch thee with her eyelids;
25 Não cobices sua formosura em teu coração, não te deixes prender por seus olhares;
26 For by a harlot a man is brought to a morsel of bread, And the adulteress layeth snares for the precious life.
26 por uma meretriz o homem se reduz a um pedaço de pão, e a mulher adúltera arrebata a vida preciosa do homem.
27 Can a man take fire into his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?
27 Porventura pode alguém esconder fogo em seu seio sem que suas vestes se inflamem?
28 Can one walk upon burning coals, And his feet not be scorched?
28 Pode caminhar sobre brasas sem que seus pés se queimem?
29 So is it with him who goeth in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished.
29 Assim o que vai para junto da mulher do seu próximo não ficará impune depois de a tocar.
30 Men do not overlook a thief, Though he steal to satisfy his appetite, when he is hungry;
30 Não se despreza o ladrão que furta para satisfazer seu apetite, quando tem fome;
31 If found, he must repay sevenfold, And give up all the substance of his house.
31 se for preso, restituirá sete vezes mais e entregará todos os bens de sua casa.
32 Whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; He that doeth it destroyeth himself;
32 Quem comete adultério carece de senso, é por sua própria culpa que um homem assim procede.
33 Blows and dishonor shall he get, And his reproach shall not be wiped away.
33 Só encontrará infâmia e ignomínia e seu opróbrio não se apagará,
34 For jealousy is the fury of a man; He will not spare in the day of vengeance;
34 porque o marido, furioso e ciumento, não perdoará no dia da vingança,
35 And he will not pay regard to any ransom, Nor be content, though thou offer many gifts.
35 não se aplacará por resgate algum, nem aceitará nada, se multiplicares os presentes.
