1 Then spake Jehovah to Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
1 Depois disto o SENHOR respondeu a Jó de um redemoinho, dizendo:
2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
2 Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento?
3 Gird up thy loins like a man! I will ask thee, and answer thou me!
3 Agora cinge os teus lombos, como homem; e perguntar-te-ei, e tu me ensinarás.
4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding!
4 Onde estavas tu, quando eu fundava a terra? Faze-mo saber, se tens inteligência.
5 Who fixed its dimensions, that thou shouldst know it! Or who stretched out the line upon it?
5 Quem lhe pôs as medidas, se é que o sabes? Ou quem estendeu sobre ela o cordel?
6 Upon what were its foundations fixed? And who laid its corner-stone,
6 Sobre que estão fundadas as suas bases, ou quem assentou a sua pedra de esquina,
7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
7 Quando as estrelas da alva juntas alegremente cantavam, e todos os filhos de Deus jubilavam?
8 And who shut up the sea with doors, When it burst forth as from the womb?
8 Ou quem encerrou o mar com portas, quando este rompeu e saiu da madre;
9 When I made the clouds its mantle, And thick darkness its swaddling-band;
9 Quando eu pus as nuvens por sua vestidura, e a escuridão por faixa?
10 When I appointed for it my bound, And fixed for it bars and doors;
10 Quando eu lhe tracei limites, e lhe pus portas e ferrolhos,
11 And said, Thus far shalt thou come, and no farther, And here shall thy proud waves be stayed!
11 E disse: Até aqui virás, e não mais adiante, e aqui se parará o orgulho das tuas ondas?
12 Hast thou, in thy life, given charge to the morning, Or caused the day-spring to know its place,
12 Ou desde os teus dias deste ordem à madrugada, ou mostraste à alva o seu lugar;
13 That it should lay hold of the ends of the earth, And shake the wicked out of it?
13 Para que pegasse nas extremidades da terra, e os ímpios fossem sacudidos dela;
14 It is changed as clay by the seal; And all things stand forth as in rich apparel.
14 E se transformasse como o barro sob o selo, e se pusessem como vestidos;
15 But from the wicked their light is withheld, And the high-raised arm is broken.
15 E dos ímpios se desvie a sua luz, e o braço altivo se quebrante;
16 Hast thou visited the springs of the sea, And walked through the recesses of the deep?
16 Ou entraste tu até às origens do mar, ou passeaste no mais profundo do abismo?
17 Have the gates of death been disclosed to thee, And hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
17 Ou descobriram-se-te as portas da morte, ou viste as portas da sombra da morte?
18 Hast thou surveyed the breadth of the earth? Declare, if thou knowest it all!
18 Ou com o teu entendimento chegaste às larguras da terra? Faze-mo saber, se sabes tudo isto.
19 Where is the way to the abode of light? And darkness—where is its dwelling-place?
19 Onde está o caminho onde mora a luz? E, quanto às trevas, onde está o seu lugar;
20 That thou shouldst lead it to its boundary, And that thou shouldst know the paths to its mansion!
20 Para que as tragas aos seus limites, e para que saibas as veredas da sua casa?
21 Surely thou knowest; for thou wast then born! And the number of thy years is great!
21 De certo tu o sabes, porque já então eras nascido, e por ser grande o número dos teus dias!
22 Hast thou visited the storehouses of the snow, Or seen the treasuries of the hail,
22 Ou entraste tu até aos tesouros da neve, e viste os tesouros da saraiva,
23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble,—Against the day of battle and war?
23 Que eu retenho até ao tempo da angústia, até ao dia da peleja e da guerra?
24 What is the way to where light is distributed, And the east wind spread abroad upon the earth?
24 Onde está o caminho em que se reparte a luz, e se espalha o vento oriental sobre a terra?
25 Who hath prepared channels for the rain, And a path for the thunder-flash,
25 Quem abriu para a inundação um leito, e um caminho para os relâmpagos dos trovões,
26 To give rain to the land without an inhabitant, To the wilderness wherein is no man;
26 Para chover sobre a terra, onde não há ninguém, e no deserto, em que não há homem;
27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground, And cause the tender herb to spring forth?
27 Para fartar a terra deserta e assolada, e para fazer crescer os renovos da erva?
28 Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
28 A chuva porventura tem pai? Ou quem gerou as gotas do orvalho?
29 Out of whose womb came the ice? And who hath gendered the hoar-frost of heaven?
29 De que ventre procedeu o gelo? E quem gerou a geada do céu?
30 The waters are hid as under stone, And the face of the deep becometh solid.
30 Como debaixo de pedra as águas se endurecem, e a superfície do abismo se congela.
31 Canst thou fasten the bands of the Pleiades, Or loosen the chains of Orion?
31 Ou poderás tu ajuntar as delícias do Sete-estrelo ou soltar os cordéis do Órion?
32 Canst thou lead forth the Signs in their season, Or guide the Bear with her sons?
32 Ou produzir as constelações a seu tempo, e guiar a Ursa com seus filhos?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Hast thou appointed their dominion over the earth?
33 Sabes tu as ordenanças dos céus, ou podes estabelecer o domínio deles sobre a terra?
34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, So that abundance of waters will cover thee?
34 Ou podes levantar a tua voz até às nuvens, para que a abundância das águas te cubra?
35 Canst thou send forth lightnings, so that they will go, And say to thee, “Here we are”?
35 Ou mandarás aos raios para que saiam, e te digam: Eis-nos aqui?
36 Who hath put understanding in the reins, And given intelligence to the mind?
36 Quem pôs a sabedoria no íntimo, ou quem deu à mente o entendimento?
37 Who numbereth the clouds in wisdom? And who poureth out the bottles of heaven,
37 Quem numerará as nuvens com sabedoria? Ou os odres dos céus, quem os esvaziará,
38 When the dust floweth into a molten mass, And the clods cleave fast together?
38 Quando se funde o pó numa massa, e se apegam os torrões uns aos outros?
39 Canst thou hunt prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the hunger of the young lions,
39 Porventura caçarás tu presa para a leoa, ou saciarás a fome dos filhos dos leões,
40 When they couch in their dens, And lie in wait in the thicket?
40 Quando se agacham nos covis, e estão à espreita nas covas?
41 Who provideth for the raven his food, When his young ones cry unto God, While they wander about without food?
41 Quem prepara aos corvos o seu alimento, quando os seus filhotes gritam a Deus e andam vagueando, por não terem o que comer?
