1 As dead flies cause the perfumer's ointment to stink and ferment; so a little foolishness is heavier than wisdom and than honor.
1 Assim como as moscas mortas fazem exalar mau cheiro e inutilizar o ungüento do perfumador, assim é, para o famoso em sabedoria e em honra, um pouco de estultícia.
2 The heart of the wise is toward his right, but the fool's heart toward his left.
2 O coração do sábio está à sua direita, mas o coração do tolo está à sua esquerda.
3 And also, in the way in which a stupid one walks, his heart fails, and he says to all that he is a fool.
3 E, até quando o tolo vai pelo caminho, falta-lhe o seu entendimento e diz a todos que é tolo.
4 If the spirit of the ruler rises up against you, do not leave your place; for composure quiets great offenses.
4 Levantando-se contra ti o espírito do governador, não deixes o teu lugar, porque a submissão é um remédio que aplaca grandes ofensas.
5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun, sins which come from the face of the ruler:
5 Ainda há um mal que vi debaixo do sol, como o erro que procede do governador.
6 folly is set in many high positions , and many rich men sit in low situations .
6 A estultícia está posta em grandes alturas, mas os ricos estão assentados em lugar baixo.
7 I have seen slaves on horses, and rulers walking as slaves on the earth.
7 Vi os servos a cavalo, e os príncipes andando sobre a terra como servos.
8 He who digs a pit may fall into it; and one breaking a wall, a snake may bite him.
8 Quem abrir uma cova, nela cairá, e quem romper um muro, uma cobra o morderá.
9 Whoever removes stones may be hurt with them; he who splits trees may be endangered by them.
9 Aquele que transporta pedras, será maltratado por elas, e o que racha lenha expõe-se ao perigo.
10 If the iron is blunt, and he does not whet the mouths, then he must put more strength to it . But wisdom is an advantage giving success.
10 Se estiver embotado o ferro, e não se afiar o corte, então se deve redobrar a força; mas a sabedoria é excelente para dirigir.
11 If the snake will bite without charming, then there is no advantage to a master of tongue.
11 Seguramente a serpente morderá antes de estar encantada, e o falador não é melhor.
12 The words of a wise mouth are grace, but the lips of a stupid one swallow him;
12 Nas palavras da boca do sábio há favor, porém os lábios do tolo o devoram.
13 the beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his mouth is evil madness.
13 O princípio das palavras da sua boca é a estultícia, e o fim do seu falar um desvario péssimo.
14 Yet the stupid one makes many words; a man knows not what they shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
14 O tolo multiplica as palavras, porém, o homem não sabe o que será; e quem lhe fará saber o que será depois dele?
15 The labor of fools wearies him, because he does not know how to go to the city.
15 O trabalho dos tolos a cada um deles fatiga, porque não sabem como ir à cidade.
16 Woe to you, O land, when your king is a boy, and your leaders eat in the morning.
16 Ai de ti, ó terra, quando teu rei é uma criança, e cujos príncipes comem de manhã.
17 Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your leaders eat in due time, in strength, and not in drinking.
17 Bem-aventurada tu, ó terra, quando teu rei é filho dos nobres, e teus príncipes comem a tempo, para se fortalecerem, e não para bebedice.
18 The framework tumbles through indolence; and through lowering of hands, the house leaks.
18 Por muita preguiça se enfraquece o teto, e pela frouxidão das mãos a casa goteja.
19 Bread is made for laughter, and wine gladdens life; but silver answers all things .
19 Para rir se fazem banquetes, e o vinho produz alegria, e por tudo o dinheiro responde.
20 Also, do not curse a king in your thought; and do not curse the rich in your bedrooms; for a bird of the heavens may carry the voice; yea, the lord of wings may tell the matter.
20 Nem ainda no teu pensamento amaldiçoes ao rei, nem tampouco no mais interior da tua recâmara amaldiçoes ao rico; porque as aves dos céus levariam a voz, e os que têm asas dariam notícia do assunto.
