1 Then Job again took up his discourse and said,
1 Jó continuou a falar:
2 “⌞O that I were⌟ as in the months before, as in the days when God watched over me,
2 “Tenho saudade dos tempos que passaram, dos dias em que Deus cuidava de mim.
3 when his shining lamp was over my head— by his light I walked through darkness—
3 Ele iluminava o caminho à minha frente, e eu andava em segurança em meio à escuridão.
4 as when I was in the days of my prime, when God’s confiding was over my ⌞house⌟,
4 Na flor de minha idade, a amizade de Deus estava presente em meu lar.
5 when Shaddaiwas still with me, my children were all around me,
5 O Todo-poderoso ainda estava comigo, e eu tinha meus filhos ao redor.
6 when my paths were washed in sour milk, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me.
6 Meus pés eram lavados em leite, e ribeiros de azeite corriam das rochas para mim.
7 “At my going out the gate to the city, I secured my seat in the square.
7 “Naquele tempo, eu ia até a porta da cidade e tomava meu lugar entre os líderes.
8 Young men saw me and stepped aside, and the aged rose up and stood.
8 Os jovens abriam caminho ao me ver, e até os idosos se punham em pé.
9 Officials refrained from talking, and they laid their hand on their mouth.
9 As autoridades se calavam e colocavam a mão sobre a boca.
10 The voices of nobles were hushed, and their tongue stuck to their palate.
10 Os mais altos oficiais da cidade faziam silêncio e refreavam a língua em sinal de respeito.
11 “When the ear heard and commended me, and the eye saw and testified in support of me
11 “Todos que me ouviam me elogiavam, todos que me viam falavam bem de mim.
12 because I saved the needy who cried for help, and I saved the orphan for whom there was no helper.
12 Pois eu auxiliava os pobres que pediam ajuda e os órfãos que precisavam de socorro.
13 The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
13 Os que estavam à beira da morte me abençoavam; eu trazia alegria ao coração das viúvas.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a headband.
14 Era honesto em tudo que fazia; a retidão me cobria como manto, e a justiça eu usava como turbante.
15 “I was eyes to the blind, and I was feet to the lame.
15 Servia de olhos para os cegos e de pés para os aleijados.
16 I was a father to the poor, and I investigated ⌞the stranger’s⌟ legal dispute.
16 Era um pai para os pobres e defendia a causa dos estrangeiros.
17 And I broke the evil one’s jaw bones, and I made his prey drop from his teeth.
17 Quebrava as mandíbulas dos ímpios e de seus dentes resgatava as vítimas.
18 “And I thought, ‘I will pass away in my nest, and like the phoenix I shall multiply my days.
18 ‘Por certo morrerei rodeado por minha família’, pensava, ‘depois de uma vida longa e boa.
19 My roots were open to water, and dew spent the night on my branches;
19 Pois sou como a árvore cujas raízes chegam até a água, cujos ramos são refrescados pelo orvalho.
20 My glory was new with me, and ⌞I was revitalized regularly⌟.’
20 Recebo sempre novas honras, e minha força vive renovada.’
21 “They listened to me and waited, and they kept silent for my counsel.
21 “Todos escutavam meus conselhos; ficavam em silêncio e esperavam que eu falasse.
22 After my word, they did not speak again, and my word dropped down like dew upon them.
22 E, depois que eu falava, nada tinham a acrescentar, pois o que eu dizia os satisfazia.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the spring rain.
23 Esperavam minhas palavras como quem espera a chuva; bebiam-nas como chuva de primavera.
24 I smiled for them when they had no confidence in anything, and they did not extinguish the light of my face.
24 Quando estavam desanimados, eu sorria para eles; valorizavam meu olhar de aprovação.
25 I chose their way, and I sat as head, and I dwelled like a king among the troops, like one who comforts mourners.
25 Como um líder, eu lhes dizia o que fazer; vivia como rei entre suas tropas e consolava os que choravam.”
