1 Then Job replied:
1 Jó tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 “If only my grief could be weighed and placed with my calamity on the scales.
2 Ah! se pudessem pesar minha aflição, e pôr na balança com ela meu infortúnio!
3 For then it would outweigh the sand of the seas— no wonder my words have been rash.
3 esta aqui apareceria mais pesada do que a areia dos mares: eis por que minhas palavras são desvairadas.
4 For the arrows of the Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
4 As setas do Todo-poderoso estão cravadas em mim, e meu espírito bebe o veneno delas; os terrores de Deus me assediam
5 Does a wild donkey bray over fresh grass, or an ox low over its fodder?
5 Porventura orneja o asno montês, quando tem erva? Muge o touro junto de sua forragem?
6 Is tasteless food eaten without salt, or is there flavor in the white of an egg?
6 Come-se uma coisa insípida sem sal? Pode alguém saborear aquilo que não tem gosto algum?
7 My soul refuses to touch them; they are loathsome food to me.
7 Minha alma recusa-se a tocar nisso, meu coração está desgostoso.
8 If only my request were granted and God would fulfill my hope:
8 Quem me dera que meu voto se cumpra, e que Deus realize minha esperança!
9 that God would be willing to crush me, to unleash His hand and cut me off!
9 Que Deus consinta em esmagar-me, que deixe suas mãos cortarem meus dias!
10 It still brings me comfort, and joy through unrelenting pain, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
10 Teria pelo menos um consolo, e exultaria em seu impiedoso tormento, por não ter renegado as palavras do Santo.
11 What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What is my future, that I should be patient?
11 Pois, que é minha força para que eu espere, qual é meu fim, para me portar com paciência?
12 Is my strength like that of stone, or my flesh made of bronze?
12 Será que tenho a fortaleza das pedras, e será de bronze minha carne?
13 Is there any help within me now that success is driven from me?
13 Não encontro socorro algum, qualquer esperança de salvação me foi tirada.
14 A despairing man should have the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
14 Recusar a piedade a um amigo é abandonar o temor ao Todo-poderoso.
15 But my brothers are as faithless as wadis, as seasonal streams that overflow,
15 Meus irmãos são traiçoeiros como a torrente, como as águas das torrentes que somem.
16 darkened because of the ice and the inflow of melting snow,
16 Rolam agitadas pelo gelo, empoçam-se com a neve derretida.
17 but ceasing in the dry season and vanishing from their channels in the heat.
17 No tempo da seca, elas se esgotam, e ao vir o calor, seu leito seca.
18 Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go into the wasteland and perish.
18 as caravanas se desviam das veredas, penetram no deserto e perecem;
19 The caravans of Tema look for water; the travelers of Sheba hope to find it.
19 As caravanas de Tema espreitavam, os comboios de Sabá contavam com elas;
20 They are confounded because they had hoped; their arrival brings disappointment.
20 ficaram transtornados nas suas suposições: ao chegarem ao lugar, ficaram confusos.
21 For now you are of no help; you see terror, and you are afraid.
21 É assim que falhais em cumprir o que de vós se esperava nesta hora; a vista de meu infortúnio vos aterroriza.
22 Have I ever said, ‘Give me something; offer me a bribe from your wealth;
22 Porventura, disse-vos eu: Dai-me qualquer coisa de vossos bens, dai-me presentes,
23 deliver me from the hand of the enemy; redeem me from the grasp of the ruthless’?
23 livrai-me da mão do inimigo, e tirai-me do poder dos violentos?
24 Teach me, and I will be silent. Help me understand how I have erred.
24 Ensinai-me e eu me calarei, mostrai-me em que falhei.
25 How painful are honest words! But what does your argument prove?
25 Como são eficazes as expressões conforme a eqüidade! Mas em que podereis surpreender-me?
26 Do you intend to correct my words, and treat as wind my cry of despair?
26 Pretendeis censurar palavras? Palavras desesperadas, leva-as o vento.
27 You would even cast lots for an orphan and barter away your friend.
27 Seríeis capazes de pôr em leilão até mesmo um órfão, de traficar o vosso amigo!
28 But now, please look at me. Would I lie to your face?
28 Vamos, peço-vos, olhai para mim face a face, não mentirei.
29 Reconsider; do not be unjust. Reconsider, for my righteousness is at stake.
29 Vinde de novo; não sejais injustos; vinde: estou inocente nessa questão.
30 Is there iniquity on my tongue? Can my mouth not discern malice?
30 Haverá iniqüidade em minha língua? Meu paladar não sabe discernir o mal?
