1 Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:
1 Então respondeu Elifaz, o temanita:
2 Should, a wise man, answer unreal knowledge? or fill, with the east wind, his inner man?
2 Porventura responderá o sábio com ciência de vento? E encherá do vento oriental o seu ventre,
3 Disputing with discourse that doth no good, or with speech, wherein is no profit?
3 argüindo com palavras que de nada servem, ou com razões com que ele nada aproveita?
4 But, thou, wouldst take away reverence, and wouldst attain unto meditation before GOD.
4 Na verdade tu destróis a reverência, e impedes a meditação diante de Deus.
5 For thine own mouth would teach thine iniquity, and thou wouldst choose the tongue of the crafty.
5 Pois a tua iniqüidade ensina a tua boca, e escolhes a língua dos astutos.
6 Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and, not I, And, thine own lips, shall testify against thee.
6 A tua própria boca te condena, e não eu; e os teus lábios testificam contra ti.
7 The first of mankind, wast thou born? Or, before the hills, wast thou brought forth?
7 És tu o primeiro homem que nasceu? Ou foste dado à luz antes dos outeiros?
8 In the secret council of GOD, hast thou been wont to hearken? Or canst thou attain for thyself unto wisdom?
8 Ou ouviste o secreto conselho de Deus? E a ti só reservas a sabedoria?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? understandest thou, and the same, is not with us?
9 Que sabes tu, que nós não saibamos; que entendes, que não haja em nós?
10 Both hoary and venerable, are among us, one mightier than thy father in days!
10 Conosco estão os encanecidos e idosos, mais idosos do que teu pai.
11 Too small for thee, are the consolations of GOD? or a word spoken gently with thee?
11 Porventura fazes pouco caso das consolações de Deus, ou da palavra que te trata benignamente?
12 How doth thine own heart carry thee away, and how thine eyes do roll!
12 Por que te arrebata o teu coração, e por que flamejam os teus olhos,
13 For thy spirit, replieth against GOD, and thou bringest forthout of thy mouthwords!
13 de modo que voltas contra Deus o teu espírito, e deixas sair tais palavras da tua boca?
14 What is a mortal, that he should be pure? or that righteous should be one born of a woman?
14 Que é o homem, para que seja puro? E o que nasce da mulher, para que fique justo?
15 Lo! in his holy ones, he putteth not confidence, and, the heavens, are not pure in his eyes:
15 Eis que Deus não confia nos seus santos, e nem o céu é puro aos seus olhos;
16 How much less when one is detested and corrupt, a man who drinketh inlike waterperversity.
16 quanto menos o homem abominável e corrupto, que bebe a iniqüidade como a água?
17 I will tell theehear me, Since this I have seen, I must needs declare it.
17 Escuta-me e to mostrarei; contar-te-ei o que tenho visto
18 Which, wise men, tell, and deny not from their fathers.
18 {o que os sábios têm anunciado e seus pais não o ocultaram;
19 To them alone, was the earth given, and no alien passed through their midst:
19 aos quais somente era dada a terra, não havendo estranho algum passado por entre eles};
20 All the days of the lawless man, he, doth writhe with pain, and, the number of years, is hidden from the tyrant;
20 Todos os dias passa o ímpio em angústia, sim, todos os anos que estão reservados para o opressor.
21 A noise of dreadful things, is in his ears, In prosperity, the destroyer cometh upon him;
21 O sonido de terrores está nos seus ouvidos; na prosperidade lhe sobrevém o assolador.
22 He hath no confidence to come back out of darkness, he, being destined to the power oft the sword;
22 Ele não crê que tornará das trevas, mas que o espera a espada.
23 A wanderer, he, for bread, ? He knoweth that, prepared by his own hand, is the day of darkness;
23 Anda vagueando em busca de pão, dizendo: Onde está? Bem sabe que o dia das trevas lhe está perto, à mão.
24 Distress and anguish shall startle him, It shall overpower him, like a king ready for the onset:
24 Amedrontam-no a angústia e a tribulação; prevalecem contra ele, como um rei preparado para a peleja.
25 Because he had stretched outagainst GODhis hand, and, against the Almighty, had been wont to behave himself proudly;
25 Porque estendeu a sua mão contra Deus, e contra o Todo-Poderoso se porta com soberba;
26 He used to run against him with uplifted neck, with the stout bosses of his bucklers;
26 arremete contra ele com dura cerviz, e com as saliências do seu escudo;
27 For he had covered his face with his fatness, and had gathered a superabundance on his loins;
27 porquanto cobriu o seu rosto com a sua gordura, e criou carne gorda nas ilhargas;
28 And had inhabited demolished cities, houses, wherein men would not dwell, that were destined to become heaps.
28 e habitou em cidades assoladas, em casas em que ninguém deveria morar, que estavam a ponto de tornar-se em montões de ruínas;
29 He shall not be rich, nor shall his substance continue, neither shall their shadow stretch along on the earth;
29 não se enriquecerá, nem subsistirá a sua fazenda, nem se estenderão pela terra as suas possessões.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness, his young branch, shall the flame dry up, and he shall depart, by the breath of his own mouth!
30 Não escapará das trevas; a chama do fogo secará os seus ramos, e ao sopro da boca de Deus desaparecerá.
31 Let no one trust in him thatby vanityis deceived, for, vanity, shall be his recompense;
31 Não confie na vaidade, enganando-se a si mesmo; pois a vaidade será a sua recompensa.
32 Before his day, shall it be accomplished, with, his palm-top, not covered with leaves;
32 Antes do seu dia se cumprirá, e o seu ramo não reverdecerá.
33 He shall wronglike a vinehis sour grapes, and shall cast offas an olive-treehis blossom.
33 Sacudirá as suas uvas verdes, como a vide, e deixará cair a sua flor como a oliveira.
34 For, the family of the impious, is unfruitful, and, a fire, hath devoured the tents of bribery;
34 Pois a assembléia dos ímpios é estéril, e o fogo consumirá as tendas do suborno.
35 Conceiving mischief, and bringing forth iniquity, yea, their inmost soul, prepareth deceit.
35 Concebem a malícia, e dão à luz a iniqüidade, e o seu coração prepara enganos.
