1 »There is a place where silver is mined and a place where gold is refined.
1 Na verdade, a prata tem suas minas, e o ouro, que se refina, o seu lugar.
2 »Iron is taken from the ground, and rocks are melted for their copper.
2 O ferro tira-se da terra, e da pedra se funde o cobre.
3 »Humans bring an end to darkness. He searches the black rock to the limit of the gloom.
3 Os homens põem termo à escuridão e até aos últimos confins procuram as pedras ocultas nas trevas e na densa escuridade.
4 »They open up a mineshaft far from civilization, where no one has set foot. In this shaft men dangle and swing back and forth.
4 Abrem entrada para minas longe da habitação dos homens, esquecidos dos transeuntes; e, assim, longe deles, dependurados, oscilam de um lado para outro.
5 »Above the ground food grows. Beneath it the food decays as if it were burned by fire.
5 Da terra procede o pão, mas embaixo é revolvida como por fogo.
6 »That place's stones are sapphire. Its dust contains gold.
6 Nas suas pedras se encontra safira, e há pó que contém ouro.
7 »No bird of prey knows the way to it. No hawk's eye has ever seen it.
7 Essa vereda, a ave de rapina a ignora, e jamais a viram os olhos do falcão.
8 »No proud beast has ever walked on it. No ferocious lion has ever passed over it.
8 Nunca a pisaram feras majestosas, nem o leãozinho passou por ela.
9 »Humans exert their power on the flinty rocks and overturn mountains at their base.
9 Estende o homem a mão contra o rochedo e revolve os montes desde as suas raízes.
10 »They cut out mineshafts in the rocks. Their eyes see every precious thing.
10 Abre canais nas pedras, e os seus olhos veem tudo o que há de mais precioso.
11 »They explore the sources of rivers to bring hidden treasures to light.
11 Tapa os veios de água, e nem uma gota sai deles, e traz à luz o que estava escondido.
12 »Where can wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?
12 Mas onde se achará a sabedoria? E onde está o lugar do entendimento?
13 »No man knows where it is. It cannot be found in this world of the living.
13 O homem não conhece o valor dela, nem se acha ela na terra dos viventes.
14 »The deep ocean says: It is not in me. The sea proclaims: Not in me either!
14 O abismo diz: Ela não está em mim; e o mar diz: Não está comigo.
15 »Gold will not buy it; neither will any amount of silver.
15 Não se dá por ela ouro fino, nem se pesa prata em câmbio dela.
16 »It cannot be bought with the gold from Ophir or with precious onyx or sapphire.
16 O seu valor não se pode avaliar pelo ouro de Ofir, nem pelo precioso ônix, nem pela safira.
17 »Neither gold nor crystal can equal its value. Nor can it be exchanged for jewelry of fine gold.
17 O ouro não se iguala a ela, nem o cristal; ela não se trocará por joia de ouro fino;
18 »Wisdom is more valuable than gems.
18 ela faz esquecer o coral e o cristal; a aquisição da sabedoria é melhor que a das pérolas.
19 »Topaz from Ethiopia cannot equal its value. It cannot be bought for any amount of pure gold.
19 Não se lhe igualará o topázio da Etiópia, nem se pode avaliar por ouro puro.
20 »Where does wisdom come from? Where does understanding live?
20 Donde, pois, vem a sabedoria, e onde está o lugar do entendimento?
21 »It is hidden from the eyes of all the living, concealed from the birds in the air.
21 Está encoberta aos olhos de todo vivente e oculta às aves do céu.
22 »Destruction and Death say: We heard a rumor about it.
22 O abismo e a morte dizem: Ouvimos com os nossos ouvidos a sua fama.
23 »God understands the way to it. He knows where it lives
23 Deus lhe entende o caminho, e ele é quem sabe o seu lugar.
24 »He can see to the ends of the earth and observe everything under heaven.
24 Porque ele perscruta até as extremidades da terra, vê tudo o que há debaixo dos céus.
25 »When he gave the wind its force and measured the water in the sea,
25 Quando regulou o peso do vento e fixou a medida das águas;
26 when he made rules for the rain and set paths for the thunderstorms,
26 quando determinou leis para a chuva e caminho para o relâmpago dos trovões,
27 then he saw it and announced it. He confirmed it and examined it.
27 então, viu ele a sabedoria e a manifestou; estabeleceu-a e também a esquadrinhou.
28 »To man he said: Respect for Jehovah is wisdom! To stay away from evil is understanding.«
28 E disse ao homem: Eis que o temor do Senhor é a sabedoria, e o apartar-se do mal é o entendimento.
