1 Just then Herod, the Tetrarch, heard of Jesus fame, and said to his courtiers.
1 Naquele tempo Herodes, o governador da Galileia, ouviu falar a respeito de Jesus.
2 "This man is Johnthe Baptist; he is risen from the dead. That is why miraculous powers are working through him."
2 Então ele disse aos seus funcionários: — Esse homem é João Batista, que foi ressuscitado. Por isso esse homem tem poder para fazer milagres.
3 For Herod had apprehended John, shackled him, and thrust him into prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philips wife,
3 Pois Herodes tinha mandado prender João, amarrar as suas mãos e jogá-lo na cadeia. Ele havia feito isso por causa de Herodias, esposa do seu irmão Filipe.
4 because Johnkept telling him, "It is not right for you to have her."
4 Pois João Batista tinha dito muitas vezes a Herodes: “Pela nossa Lei você é proibido de casar com Herodias!”
5 And although he wished to kill John, he feared the people, for they considered Johna prophet.
5 Herodes queria matá-lo, mas tinha medo do povo, pois eles achavam que João era profeta .
6 But when Herods birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company,
6 No dia do aniversário de Herodes, a filha de Herodias dançou diante de todos, e ele gostou tanto,
7 and so pleased Herod that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked for.
7 que prometeu à moça: — Juro que darei tudo o que você me pedir!
8 So, prompted by her mother, the girl said, "Give me at once, upon a dish, the head of Johnthe Baptist."
8 Seguindo o conselho da sua mãe, ela pediu: — Quero a cabeça de João Batista num prato, agora mesmo!
9 The king was displeased because of this, but because of his oaths and his guests he ordered it to be given her.
9 O rei Herodes ficou triste, mas, por causa do juramento que havia feito na frente dos convidados, ordenou que o pedido da moça fosse atendido.
10 He sent and beheaded Johnin prison;
10 E mandou que cortassem a cabeça de João Batista, na cadeia.
11 the head was brought on a dish, and given to the young girl, who took it to her mother.
11 Aí trouxeram a cabeça num prato, entregaram para a moça, e ela a levou para a sua mãe.
12 Then Johns disciples went and removed his body, and came and told Jesus.
12 Então os discípulos de João vieram, levaram o corpo dele e o sepultaram. Depois foram contar isso a Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard it he went away privately by boat to a lonely spot; but the crowds heard about it, and followed him on foot from the cities.
13 Ao saber o que havia acontecido, Jesus saiu dali num barco e foi sozinho para um lugar deserto. Mas as multidões souberam onde ele estava, vieram dos seus povoados e o seguiram por terra.
14 So when he landed he saw a great multitude, and felt compassion for them, and healed their sick.
14 Quando Jesus saiu do barco e viu aquela grande multidão, ficou com muita pena deles e curou os doentes que estavam ali.
15 As twilight fell, his disciples came to him and said. "This is a lonely spot, and the day is far spent; send the crowds away, so that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food."
15 De tardinha, os discípulos chegaram perto de Jesus e disseram: — Já é tarde, e este lugar é deserto. Mande essa gente embora, a fim de que vão aos povoados e comprem alguma coisa para comer.
16 "They need not go away," said Jesus, "do you, yourselves, give them something to eat."
16 Mas Jesus respondeu:
17 "We have nothing here," they replied, "except five loaves and two fishes."
17 Eles disseram: — Só temos aqui cinco pães e dois peixes.
18 "Bring them here to me," said Jesus.
18 — Pois tragam para mim! — disse Jesus.
19 Then he told the people to sit down on the grass, and after taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves and handed them to the disciples, and the disciples handed them to the crowds.
19 Então mandou o povo sentar-se na grama. Depois pegou os cinco pães e os dois peixes, olhou para o céu e deu graças a Deus. Partiu os pães, entregou-os aos discípulos, e estes distribuíram ao povo.
20 And they all ate and were fully satisfied, and they took up of the fragments that remained, twelve basketfuls.
20 Todos comeram e ficaram satisfeitos, e os discípulos ainda recolheram doze cestos cheios dos pedaços que sobraram.
21 Those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
21 Os que comeram foram mais ou menos cinco mil homens, sem contar as mulheres e as crianças.
22 Then he made his disciples get aboard the boat and precede him to the other side, while he sent away the crowds.
22 Logo depois, Jesus ordenou aos discípulos que subissem no barco e fossem na frente para o lado oeste do lago, enquanto ele mandava o povo embora.
23 After he had sent the crowds away, he went up into the mountain alone, to pray. When night came he was there alone.
23 Depois de mandar o povo embora, Jesus subiu um monte a fim de orar sozinho. Quando chegou a noite, ele estava ali, sozinho.
24 But the boat was already a long way from shore, buffeted by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
24 Naquele momento o barco já estava no meio do lago. E as ondas batiam com força no barco porque o vento soprava contra ele.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came toward them, walking upon the sea,
25 Já de madrugada, entre as três e as seis horas, Jesus foi até lá, andando em cima da água.
26 but when the disciples saw him walking upon the sea, they were terrified. "It is a phantom," they said, and cried out for fear.
26 Quando os discípulos viram Jesus andando em cima da água, ficaram apavorados e exclamaram: — É um fantasma! E gritaram de medo.
27 But at once Jesus spoke to them, "Courage," he said, "it is I. Fear not."
27 Nesse instante Jesus disse:
28 Peter answered, "Master, if it is you, bid me come to you upon the water."
28 Então Pedro disse: — Se é o senhor mesmo, mande que eu vá andando em cima da água até onde o senhor está.
29 "Come," said Jesus. Then Peter got down from the boat and walked on the water to go to Jesus.
29 — Venha! — respondeu Jesus. Pedro saiu do barco e começou a andar em cima da água, em direção a Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and as he began to sink, he cried out, "Master, save me!"
30 Porém, quando sentiu a força do vento, ficou com medo e começou a afundar. Então gritou: — Socorro, Senhor!
31 At once Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, saying to him. "O little faith! What made you doubt?"
31 Imediatamente Jesus estendeu a mão, segurou Pedro e disse:
32 Then as they climbed into the boat the wind grew weary,
32 Então os dois subiram no barco, e o vento se acalmou.
33 and the men in the boat fell upon their knees before him, saying, "You are, indeed, the Son of God."
33 E os discípulos adoraram Jesus, dizendo: — De fato, o senhor é o Filho de Deus!
34 Then they crossed over and came to land at Gennesaret;
34 Jesus e os discípulos atravessaram o lago e chegaram à região de Genesaré.
35 and when the men of that country recognized him, they sent into all the country round about, and brought to him all the sick,
35 Ali o povo reconheceu Jesus e avisou todos os doentes das regiões vizinhas. Então muitas pessoas levaram doentes a ele,
36 and kept begging him to let them touch the tassel of his cloak - and all who touched were completely cured.
36 pedindo que deixasse que os doentes pelo menos tocassem na barra da sua roupa. E todos os que tocavam nela ficavam curados.
