1 A Maskil of Assaph. Give ear, O my people, to my instruction: incline thy ear to the words of my mouth.
1 Meu povo, escute a minha lei; dê ouvidos às palavras da minha boca.
2 I will open with a parable my mouth: I will utter riddles out of ancient times;
2 Abrirei os meus lábios para proferir parábolas e publicarei enigmas dos tempos antigos.
3 Which we have heard and know, and which our fathers have related unto us.
3 O que ouvimos e aprendemos, o que os nossos pais nos contaram,
4 We will not conceal them from their children, relating to the latest generation the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful deeds which he hath done.
4 não o encobriremos a seus filhos; contaremos à geração vindoura os louvores do e o seu poder, e as maravilhas que fez.
5 Yea, he established a testimony in Jacob, and instituted a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
5 Ele estabeleceu um testemunho em Jacó, e instituiu uma lei em Israel, e ordenou aos nossos pais que os transmitissem a seus filhos,
6 In order that the latest generation might know them, even the children that are to be born; that they may arise and relate them to their children;
6 a fim de que a nova geração os conhecesse, e os filhos que ainda hão de nascer se levantassem e, por sua vez, os contassem aos seus descendentes;
7 That they may place in God their hope, and not forget the doings of God, but observe his commandments;
7 para que pusessem a sua confiança em Deus e não se esquecessem dos feitos de Deus, mas lhe observassem os mandamentos;
8 And that they may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that had not directed their heart firmly, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
8 e que não fossem, como seus pais, geração obstinada e rebelde, geração de coração inconstante, e cujo espírito não foi fiel a Deus.
9 The children of Ephraim, like well–armed archers, that turn round on the day of battle,
9 Os filhos de Efraim, embora armados com arcos, bateram em retirada no dia do combate.
10 Kept not the covenant of God, and in his law they refused to walk;
10 Não guardaram a aliança de Deus, não quiseram andar na sua lei;
11 And they forgot his deeds, as also his wonders, which he had permitted them to see.
11 esqueceram-se das suas obras e das maravilhas que lhes havia mostrado.
12 In the presence of their fathers did he do wonders, in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zo’an.
12 Deus fez prodígios na presença de seus pais na terra do Egito, no campo de Zoã.
13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters stand upright as a wall.
13 Dividiu o mar e os fez passar por ele; fez parar as águas como um montão.
14 And he led them with the cloud by day, and all the night with a light of fire.
14 Durante o dia, os guiou com uma nuvem e de noite, com um clarão de fogo.
15 He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the mighty deep.
15 No deserto, fendeu rochas e lhes deu de beber abundantemente como de abismos.
16 And he brought forth running streams out of the rock, and caused water to run down like rivers.
16 Da pedra fez brotar torrentes, fez manar água como rios.
17 But they repeated to sin yet more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
17 Mas, ainda assim, continuaram a pecar contra ele e se rebelaram, no deserto, contra o Altíssimo.
18 And they tempted God in their heart, by asking food for their desire.
18 Tentaram a Deus no seu coração, pedindo alimento que lhes fosse do gosto.
19 Yea, they spoke against God: they said, Will God be able to set in order a table in the wilderness?
19 Falaram contra Deus, dizendo: “Será que Deus pode preparar-nos uma mesa no deserto?
20 Behold, he smote the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed: shall he also be able to give bread? or can he provide flesh for his people?
20 É verdade que ele feriu a rocha, e dela manaram águas, transbordaram as torrentes. Mas será que ele pode dar-nos pão também? Ou fornecer carne para o seu povo?”
21 Therefore, when the Lord heard this, he became wroth: and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also ascended against Israel,
21 Ouvindo isto, o acendeu-se fogo contra Jacó, e também se levantou o seu furor contra Israel,
22 Because they had not believed in God, and had not trusted in his salvation.
22 porque não creram em Deus, nem confiaram na sua salvação.
23 Then he ordained the skies from above, and the doors of heaven he opened;
23 Mesmo assim, deu ordens às nuvens e abriu as portas dos céus;
24 And he let rain down upon them manna to eat, and the corn of heaven gave he unto them.
24 fez chover maná sobre eles, para alimentá-los, e lhes deu cereal do céu.
25 Angels’ bread did man eat: he sent them provision to satisfaction.
25 Todos comeram o pão dos anjos; ele enviou-lhes comida à vontade.
26 He caused an east wind to pass along the heavens; and he led forth by his strength the south wind.
26 Fez soprar no céu o vento do Oriente e pelo seu poder conduziu o vento do Sul.
27 And he let rain upon them flesh as plentiful as the dust, and winged birds like the sand of the sea;
27 Também fez chover sobre eles carne como poeira e aves numerosas como a areia do mar.
28 And he let them fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.
28 Fez com que caíssem no meio do arraial deles, ao redor de suas tendas.
29 And they ate, and were greatly satisfied, and what they longed for he brought unto them.
29 Então comeram e se fartaram a valer; pois lhes fez o que desejavam.
30 They were not estranged from their longing, yet was their food in their mouth:
30 Porém não reprimiram o apetite. Ainda tinham o alimento na boca,
31 When the wrath of God ascended against them, and he slew some of the fattest of them, and the young men of Israel did he strike down.
31 quando se elevou contra eles a ira de Deus, e entre os seus mais robustos semeou a morte, e prostrou os jovens de Israel.
32 With all this they sinned again, and believed not in his wonders.
32 Apesar de tudo isso, continuaram a pecar e não creram nas maravilhas de Deus.
33 Therefore he caused their days to come to an end in nought, and their years in dread.
33 Por isso, ele fez com que os seus dias se dissipassem num sopro e os seus anos, em súbito terror.
34 When he slew them, then did they seek him, and they returned and inquired earnestly after God.
34 Quando os fazia morrer, eles o buscavam; arrependidos, procuravam Deus.
35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the most high God their redeemer.
35 Lembravam-se de que Deus era a sua rocha e o Deus Altíssimo, o seu Redentor.
36 Nevertheless they prayed insincerely to him with their mouth, and with their tongue they lied unto him.
36 Lisonjeavam-no, porém de boca, e com a língua lhe mentiam.
37 For their heart was not firm with him, and they were not faithful in his covenant.
37 Porque o coração deles não era firme para com ele, nem foram fiéis à sua aliança.
38 But he, being merciful, forgave the iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not awaken all his fury.
38 Ele, porém, que é misericordioso, perdoa a iniquidade e não destrói; muitas vezes desvia a sua ira e não desperta toda a sua indignação.
39 And he remembered that they are but flesh, a spirit that passeth away, and returneth not again.
39 Lembra-se de que eles são simples mortais, vento que passa e não volta mais.
40 How oft did they rebel against him in the wilderness, grieve him in the desert!
40 Quantas vezes se rebelaram contra ele no deserto e nos lugares áridos lhe causaram tristeza!
41 Yea, they once more tempted God, and set limits to the Holy One of Israel.
41 Tornaram a pôr Deus à prova, ofenderam o Santo de Israel.
42 They remembered not his hand, the day when he ransomed them from the adversary;
42 Não se lembraram do poder dele, nem do dia em que os resgatou do adversário;
43 When he displayed in Egypt his signs, and his wonderful tokens in the fields of Zo’an.
43 de como no Egito ele operou os seus sinais e os seus prodígios, no campo de Zoã;
44 And he changed their rivers into blood; and their running streams, that they could not drink of them.
44 e transformou em sangue os rios deles, para que das suas correntes não bebessem.
45 He sent out among them various wild beasts, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
45 Enviou contra eles enxames de moscas que os devorassem e rãs que os destruíssem.
46 And he gave unto the cricket their products, and their labor unto the locust.
46 Entregou às lagartas as suas colheitas e aos gafanhotos, o fruto do seu trabalho.
47 He slew with hail their vines, and their sycamore–trees with ice–bolts.
47 Com chuvas de pedra lhes destruiu as vinhas e os seus sicômoros, com geada.
48 And he surrendered to the hail their cattle, and their herds to the lightning’s flashes.
48 Entregou ao granizo o gado deles e aos raios, os seus rebanhos.
49 He let loose against them the fierceness of his anger, wrath and indignation, and distress, a host of angels of misfortune.
49 Lançou contra eles o furor da sua ira: cólera, indignação e calamidade, legião de anjos portadores de males.
50 He leveled a path for his anger; he withheld not from death their soul, and their life he surrendered to the pestilence;
50 Deu livre curso à sua ira; não poupou da morte a alma deles, mas entregou a vida deles à peste.
51 And he smote all the first–born in Egypt; the first of their strength in the tents of Ham;
51 Matou todos os primogênitos no Egito, as primícias do vigor nas tendas de Cam.
52 But he caused his own people to depart like flocks, and guided them like a drove in the wilderness.
52 Fez sair o seu povo como ovelhas e o guiou pelo deserto, como um rebanho.
53 And he led them in safety, so that they felt no dread; but the sea covered over their enemies.
53 Dirigiu-o com segurança, e não tiveram medo, ao passo que o mar submergiu os seus inimigos.
54 And he brought them to his holy territory, even to this mount, which his right hand had acquired.
54 Levou-os até a sua terra santa, até o monte que a sua mão direita adquiriu.
55 And he drove out from before them nations, and divided them by the measuring–line as an inheritance, and he caused to dwell in their tents the tribes of Israel.
55 Da presença deles expulsou as nações, cuja região repartiu com eles por herança; e nas suas tendas fez habitar as tribos de Israel.
56 Yet they tempted and rebelled against the most high God, and his testimonies they kept not;
56 Ainda assim, tentaram o Deus Altíssimo, e a ele resistiram, e não lhe guardaram os testemunhos.
57 But swerved aside, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers; they turned about like a deceitful bow.
57 Tornaram atrás e foram infiéis como os seus pais; desviaram-se como um arco enganoso.
58 And they provoked him to anger with their high–places, and with their graven images they moved him to jealousy.
58 Pois o provocaram à ira com os seus lugares altos e com as suas imagens de escultura despertaram o seu ciúme.
59 God heard this, and he became wroth, and felt greatly disgusted with Israel;
59 Deus ouviu isso e se indignou; rejeitou completamente o povo de Israel.
60 And he cast off the dwelling at Shiloh, the tabernacle where he had dwelt among men;
60 Por isso, abandonou o tabernáculo de Siló, a tenda de sua morada aqui na terra,
61 And he gave up his strength unto captivity, and his glory into the adversary’s hand.
61 e passou a arca da aliança ao cativeiro, e a sua glória, à mão do adversário.
62 And he surrendered his people unto the sword; and with his inheritance was he wroth.
62 Entregou o seu povo à espada e se encolerizou contra a sua própria herança.
63 His young men the fire devoured; and his virgins were not demanded in marriage.
63 O fogo devorou os jovens deles, e as suas donzelas não tiveram canto nupcial.
64 His priests fell by the sword; and his widows did not weep.
64 Os seus sacerdotes caíram à espada, e as suas viúvas não fizeram lamentações.
65 Then awoke the Lord as one that sleepeth, like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
65 Então o Senhor despertou como de um sono, como um valente que grita excitado pelo vinho;
66 And he smote his enemies backward: a perpetual disgrace on them.
66 fez recuar a golpes os seus adversários e os entregou a perpétuo desprezo.
67 Yet was he disgusted with the tent of Joseph, and of the tribe of Ephraim he made not choice;
67 Além disso, rejeitou a tenda de José e não elegeu a tribo de Efraim.
68 But he chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
68 Pelo contrário, escolheu a tribo de Judá, o monte Sião, que ele amava.
69 And he built like high mountains his sanctuary, like the earth which he hath founded for ever.
69 E construiu o seu santuário durável como os céus e firme como a terra que estabeleceu para sempre.
70 And he made choice of David his servant, and took him from the sheep–folds:
70 Também escolheu o seu servo Davi, e o tirou do aprisco das ovelhas,
71 From following the ewes with young he brought him, to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
71 do cuidado das ovelhas e suas crias, para ser o pastor de Jacó, seu povo, e de Israel, sua herança.
72 And he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and by the skilfulness of his hands did he lead them.
72 E ele os apascentou segundo a integridade do seu coração e os dirigiu com sábias mãos.
