1 Is there not a limited time of service to a mortal upon the earth? Are not his days also like the days of a hired laborer?
1 "Não é pesado o labor do homem na terra? Seus dias não são como os de um assalariado?
2 As a servant eagerly longeth for the shadow, and as a hired laborer hopeth for his reward:
2 Como o escravo que anseia pelas sombras do entardecer, ou como o assalariado que espera ansioso pelo pagamento,
3 So was I compelled to possess months of vanity, and nights of trouble were counted out unto me.
3 assim me deram meses de ilusão, e noites de desgraça me foram destinadas.
4 When I He down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am wearied with tossings about till the dawn of day.
4 Quando me deito, fico pensando: ‘Quanto vai demorar para eu me levantar? ’ A noite se arrasta, e eu fico me virando na cama até o amanhecer.
5 My flesh is covered with worms and clods of dust: my skin is burst open, and become loathsome.
5 Meu corpo está coberto de vermes e cascas de ferida, minha pele está rachada e vertendo pus.
6 My days hasten away more swiftly than a weavers shuttle, and they come to an end in the absence of hope.
6 "Meus dias correm mais depressa que a lançadeira do tecelão, e chegam ao fim sem nenhuma esperança.
7 Oh remember that nothing but a breath is my life; that my eye will not again see happiness;
7 Lembra-te, ó Deus, de que a minha vida não passa de um sopro; meus olhos jamais tornarão a ver a felicidade.
8 The eye of him that seeth me now will not behold me again: thou fixest thy eyes upon me, and I am no more.
8 Os que agora me vêem, nunca mais me verão; puseste o teu olhar em mim, e já não existo.
9 As the cloud vanisheth and passeth away: so will he that goeth down to the nether world not come up again.
9 Assim como a nuvem esvai-se e desaparece, assim quem desce à sepultura não volta.
10 He will return no more to his house, and his place will not recognize him any more.
10 Nunca mais voltará ao seu lar; a sua habitação não mais o conhecerá.
11 Therefore will I also not restrain my mouth: I will speak in the anguish of my spirit: I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
11 "Por isso não me calo; na aflição do meu espírito me desabafarei, na amargura da minha alma farei as minhas queixas.
12 Am I a sea, or a monster, that thou settest a watch over me?
12 Sou eu o mar, ou o monstro das profundezas, para que me ponhas sob guarda?
13 For should I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall help me bear my complaint:
13 Quando penso que a minha cama me consolará e que o meu leito aliviará a minha queixa,
14 Then wouldst thou frighten me with dreams, and with visions wouldst thou terrify me;
14 mesmo aí me assustas com sonhos e me aterrorizas com visões.
15 So that my soul would choose strangling, death rather than these limbs of mine.
15 Prefiro ser estrangulado e morrer do que sofrer assim;
16 I loathe it; I cannot live for ever: let me alone; for my days are but nought.
16 sinto desprezo pela minha vida! Não vou viver para sempre; deixa-me, pois os meus dias não têm sentido.
17 What is the mortal, that thou shouldst make him great? and that thou shouldst direct thy heart toward him?
17 "Que é o homem, para que lhe dês importância e atenção,
18 And that thou shouldst visit him every morning, probe him every moment?
18 para que o examines a cada manhã e o proves a cada instante?
19 How long wilt thou not turn thy regard from me, nor let; me loose till I swallow down my spittle?
19 Nunca desviarás de mim o teu olhar? Nunca me deixarás a sós, nem por um instante?
20 If I have sinned, what injury can I cause unto thee, O thou Guardian of men? why hast thou set me as an object for thee to strike at, so that I am become a burden to myself?
20 Se pequei, que mal te causei, ó tu que vigias os homens? Por que me tornaste teu alvo? Acaso tornei-me um fardo para ti?
21 And why wilt thou not forgive my transgression, and let my iniquity pass away? for soon must I lie down in the dust; and thou wilt seek for me, but I shall be no more.
21 Por que não perdoas as minhas ofensas e não apagas os meus pecados? Pois logo me deitarei no pó; tu me procurarás, mas eu já não existirei".
