1 And Elihu commenced, and said,
1 Eliú retomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 Hear, O ye wise men, my words; and ye that have knowledge, give ear unto me.
2 Sábios, ouvi meu discurso; eruditos, prestai atenção,
3 For the ear proveth words, as the palate tasteth the food.
3 pois o ouvido discerne o valor das palavras, como o paladar aprecia as iguarias.
4 Let us choose for ourselves what is just: let us acknowledge between ourselves what is good.
4 Procuremos discernir o que é justo, e conhecer entre nós o que é bom.
5 For Job hath said, "I am righteous; and God hath taken away justice from me.
5 Jó disse: Eu sou inocente; é Deus que recusa fazer-me justiça.
6 Should I lie concerning the justice due me? incurable is my wound from the arrow I bear in me without any transgression."
6 A despeito de meu direito, passo por mentiroso, minha ferida é incurável, sem que eu tenha pecado.
7 What man is there like Job, who drinketh scorning like water,
7 Onde existe um homem como Jó, para beber a blasfêmia como quem bebe água,
8 And is on the road to keep company with the wrongdoers, and to walk with men of wickedness?
8 para andar de par com os ímpios e caminhar com os perversos?
9 For he hath said, "It profiteth a man nothing when he acteth according to the pleasure of God."
9 Pois ele disse: O homem não ganha nada em ser agradável a Deus.
10 Therefore ye men of sense hearken unto me: far is it from God to practise wickedness; and from the Almighty to do wrong!
10 Ouvi-me, pois, homens sensatos: longe de Deus a injustiça! Longe do Todo-poderoso a iniqüidade!
11 For the work of a son of earth doth he recompense unto him, and according to the path of man doth he permit things to occur to him.
11 Ele trata o homem conforme seus atos, dá a cada um o que merece.
12 Yea, surely God will not condemn unjustly, nor will the Almighty pervert justice.
12 É claro! Deus não é injusto, e o Todo-poderoso não falseia o direito.
13 Who hath given him a charge concerning the earth? or who hath intrusted him the whole world?
13 Quem lhe confiou a administração da terra? Quem lhe entregou o universo?
14 If he were to set his heart upon man, he would gather unto himself his spirit and his breath:
14 Se lhe retomasse o sopro, se lhe retirasse o alento,
15 All flesh would perish together, and the son of earth would return again unto dust.
15 toda carne expiraria no mesmo instante, o homem voltaria ao pó.
16 If then thou wishest to understand, hear this: give ear to the sound of my words.
16 Se tens inteligência, escuta isto, dá ouvidos ao som de minhas palavras:
17 Is it possible that he who hateth justice should govern? or wilt thou condemn the righteous mighty One?
17 um inimigo do direito poderia governar? Pode o Justo, o Poderoso cometer a iniqüidade?
18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art worthless? and to princes, Ye are wicked?
18 Ele que disse a um rei: Malvado! A príncipes: Celerados!
19 Whereas he is one that showeth no favor to chieftains, and distinguisheth not the rich before the indigent; for all of them are the work of his hands.
19 Ele não tem preferência pelos grandes, e não tem mais consideração pelos ricos do que pelos pobres, porque são todos obras de suas mãos.
20 In a moment will they die, and in the midst of the night; people are moved, and pass away: and the mighty will be removed without a human hand.
20 Subitamente, perecem no meio da noite; os povos vacilam e passam, o poderoso desaparece, sem o socorro de mão alguma.
21 For big eyes are upon the ways of man, and all his steps doth he see.
21 Pois Deus olha para o proceder do homem, vê todos os seus passos.
22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the evildoers can hide themselves.
22 Não há obscuridade, nem trevas onde o iníquo possa esconder-se.
23 For he need not direct his attention a long time upon man, that he should enter into judgment before God.
23 Não precisa olhar duas vezes para um homem para citá-lo em justiça consigo.
24 He breaketh down mighty men without long searching, and placeth others in their stead.
24 Abate os poderosos sem inquérito, e põe outros em lugar deles,
25 For the reason that he knoweth their deeds: therefore he overturneth them in the night, and they are crushed.
25 pois conhece suas ações; derruba-os à noite, são esmagados.
26 Among wicked men doth he strike them, in the place where many see them:
26 Fere-os como ímpios, num lugar onde são vistos,
27 Because they have departed from following him, and have not considered all his ways.
27 porque se afastaram dele e não quiseram conhecer os seus caminhos,
28 Bringing before them the cry of the indigent, and the cry of the afflicted which he had to hear.
28 fazendo chegar até ele o clamor do pobre e tornando-o atento ao grito do infeliz.
29 When he now granteth rest, who will condemn him! and when he hideth his face, who can behold him? whether it be against a nation, or against one man, it is the same:
29 Se ele dá a paz, quem o censurará? Se oculta sua face, quem poderá contemplá-lo?
30 That no hypocritical man may reign, that such shall not be a mare to the people.
30 Assim trata ele o povo e o indivíduo de maneira que o ímpio não venha a reinar, e já não seja uma armadilha para o povo.
31 For truly it is only fitting to say unto God, "I bear cheerfully, I will not do any wrong;
31 Tinha dito a Deus: Fui seduzido, não mais pecarei,
32 What I cannot see myself, do thou truly teach me; if I have done what is unjust, I will do so no more."
32 ensina-me o que ignoro; se fiz o mal, não recomeçarei mais.
33 Should he then according to thy view send a recompense, because thou hast rejected him? "Because thou must choose, and not I?" and what thou knowest, do speak.
33 Julgas, então, que ele deve punir, já que rejeitaste suas ordens? És tu quem deves escolher, não eu; dize, pois, o que sabes.
34 Men of sense will say unto me, and every wise man who heareth me,
34 As pessoas sensatas me responderão, como qualquer homem sábio que me tiver ouvido:
35 That Job hath not spoken with knowledge, and that his words are without intelligence.
35 Jó não falou conforme a razão, falta-lhe bom senso às palavras.
36 Oh that Job may therefore be probed continually, in order to give answers against sinful men.
36 Pois bem! Que Jó seja provado até o fim, já que suas respostas são as de um ímpio.
37 For he addeth unto his sin transgression: among us he uttereth too many loud words, and multiplieth his speeches against God.
37 Leva ao máximo o seu pecado {bate as mãos no meio de nós}, multiplicando seus discursos contra Deus.
