1 A covenant had I made with my eyes: how then should I fix my look on a virgin?
1 “Fiz uma aliança com meus olhos de não olhar com cobiça para nenhuma jovem.
2 And what then would have been my portion of God from above? and what lot of the Almighty from on high?
2 Pois o que Deus, lá de cima, escolheu para nós? Qual é nossa herança do Todo-poderoso, que está lá no alto?
3 Is not calamity ready for the unjust? and misfortune for the wrongdoers?
3 Não é calamidade para os perversos e desgraça para os que praticam o mal?
4 Behold, he truly seeth my ways, and numbereth all my steps;
4 Afinal, ele não vê tudo que faço e cada passo que dou?
5 And knoweth whether I have walked with vain desires, or if my foot hath hastened after deceit.
5 “Se minha conduta foi falsa, e se procurei enganar alguém,
6 Let him weigh me then in a righteous balance, and let God acknowledge my integrity,
6 que Deus me pese numa balança justa, pois conhecerá minha integridade.
7 If my step have turned aside from the proper way, and my heart have walked after my eyes, and if any blemish have cleaved to my hands:
7 Se me desviei de seu caminho, se meu coração cobiçou o que os olhos viram, ou se sou culpado de algum outro pecado,
8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; and let what I have growing be rooted out.
8 que outros comam o que semeei; que minhas plantações sejam arrancadas pela raiz.
9 If my heart have been beguiled toward a woman, or if I have lain in wait at my neighbors door:
9 “Se meu coração foi seduzido por uma mulher, ou se cobicei a esposa de meu próximo,
10 Then may my wife labor at the mill for another, and may strangers illuse her;
10 que minha esposa se torne serva de outro homem; que outros durmam com ela.
11 For this would be incest; yea, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges;
11 Pois a cobiça é um pecado vergonhoso, um crime que merece castigo.
12 For it would be a fire that consumeth down to the place of corruption, and would root out all my products.
12 É fogo que tudo consome, levando à destruição, capaz de destruir tudo que tenho.
13 If ever I cast aside the justice due to my manservant and my maidservant, when they contended with me:
13 “Se fui injusto com meus servos e servas quando me apresentaram suas queixas,
14 What then could I do when God should rise up? and when he should investigate, what could I answer him?
14 que farei quando Deus me confrontar? Que direi quando ele me chamar para prestar contas?
15 Did not he that made me make him born or a woman? and did not the same one fashion us in the womb?
15 Pois o mesmo Deus que me criou, também criou meus servos; formou no ventre materno tanto eles como eu.
16 If ever I denied the wish of the indigent, or ever allowed the eyes of the widow to fall in vain hopes;
16 “Acaso me recusei a ajudar os pobres ou acabei com a esperança da viúva?
17 Or if ever I ate my bread by myself alone, and the fatherless did not eat thereof;
17 Fui mesquinho com meu alimento e me recusei a compartilhá-lo com os órfãos?
18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as though we were of one father, and I have guided her as though she was sprung from my mothers womb;)
18 Não! Desde a juventude, tenho cuidado dos órfãos como um pai e, por toda a vida, tenho ajudado as viúvas.
19 If ever I saw any one perishing for want of clothing, or the needy without covering:
19 Sempre que via alguém passar frio por falta de roupa, e o pobre que não tinha o que vestir,
20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he have not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
20 acaso eles não me abençoavam por lhes prover roupas de lã para aquecê-los?
21 If I have swung my hand against the fatherless, because I saw in the gate those that would help me:
21 “Se levantei a mão contra o órfão, certo de que os juízes tomariam meu partido,
22 Then may my shoulder fall from my shoulderblade, and my arm be broken from the channelbone;
22 que meu ombro seja deslocado e meu braço, arrancado da articulação!
23 For dreaded by me was the calamitous punishment of God, and against his highness I can accomplish nothing.
23 Seria melhor que enfrentar o castigo de Deus; pois, se a majestade de Deus é contra mim, que esperança resta?
24 If I have made gold my confidence, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my trust:
24 “Acaso confiei no dinheiro ou me senti seguro por causa de meu ouro?
25 If ever I rejoiced because my wealth was abundant, and because my hand had gotten much;
25 Acaso me vangloriei de minha riqueza e de tudo que possuo?
26 If ever I looked at the light of the sun when he shone brightly and on the moon walking in splendor:
26 “Olhei para o sol, que brilha no céu, ou para a lua, que percorre seu resplendor,
27 And my heart became misled in secret, and my hand kissed my mouth:
27 e, em segredo, meu coração foi seduzido a lhes lançar beijos de adoração?
28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge; for thus would I have denied the God that is above.
28 Se o fiz, devo ser castigado pelos juízes, pois significa que neguei o Deus que está lá no alto.
29 If ever I rejoiced at the downfall of him that hated me, or was elated when evil befell him;
29 “Alguma vez me alegrei com a desgraça de meus inimigos, ou exultei porque lhes aconteceu algum mal?
30 But I suffered not my mouth to sin by denouncing with a curse his soul:
30 Não, jamais cometi o pecado de amaldiçoar alguém ou de pedir sua morte como vingança.
31 If the men of my tent said not, Oh is there one that is not satisfied of his flesh;
31 “Meus servos nunca disseram: ‘Ele deixa os outros passar fome’.
32 In the street a stranger had not to lodge; my doors I held open to the roadside;
32 Nunca deixei o estrangeiro dormir na rua; minha porta sempre esteve aberta para todos.
33 If I covered up my transgressions like a common man, by hiding in my bosom my iniquity;
33 “Acaso procurei encobrir meus pecados, como outros fazem, e esconder a culpa em meu coração?
34 Because I dreaded the great multitude, or because the contempt of families did terrify me, so that I kept silence, and dared not to go out of the door;
34 Mantive-me calado e não saí de casa, por medo da multidão ou do desprezo do povo?
35 Oh who will bring me one that would hear me! behold, here is my plea; may the Almighty answer me; and any record which my opponent may have written,
35 “Se ao menos alguém me ouvisse! Vejam, aqui está minha defesa assinada. Que o Todo-poderoso me responda; que meu adversário registre sua denúncia por escrito.
36 Surely upon my shoulder would I carry it: I would bind it as a crown unto me.
36 Eu enfrentaria a acusação de peito aberto e a usaria como coroa.
37 The number of my steps would I tell him: as to a prince would I go near unto him.
37 Pois eu diria a Deus exatamente o que tenho feito; compareceria diante dele como um príncipe.
38 If my land ever cried out because of me, or if its furrows wept together;
38 “Se a terra protestar contra mim, se todos os seus sulcos clamarem,
39 If I ever consumed its strength without payment, or caused the soul of its owners to grieve:
39 se roubei suas colheitas, ou se matei seus donos,
40 Then may instead of wheat, thorns come forth, and instead of barley, cockle. (Here end the words of Job.)
40 que cresçam espinhos em lugar de trigo e ervas daninhas em lugar de cevada”. Assim terminam as palavras de Jó.
