1 Then answered Job, and said,
1 Então Jó respondeu:
2 Hear, O hear my speech, and let this be wherewith you give consolations.
2 “Ouçam com atenção as minhas palavras; seja esta a consolação que vocês me trazem.
3 Bear with me that I may indeed speak: and after my speaking, then canst thou mock.
3 Tenham paciência, e eu falarei; e, havendo eu falado, poderão zombar de mim.
4 As for me,is against man my complaint? and if this be so, why should my spirit not be impatient?
4 Será que é do homem que eu me queixo? Não tenho motivo para ficar impaciente?
5 Turn yourselves unto me, and be astounded, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
5 Olhem para mim e fiquem pasmos, e ponham a mão sobre a boca.
6 Yea, when I think of it, I am terrified, and shuddering seizeth hold of my flesh.
6 Porque só de pensar nisso fico apavorado, e sinto um calafrio passar pelo meu corpo.”
7 Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, grow strong in power?
7 “Como é que os ímpios continuam vivos, envelhecem e ainda se tornam mais poderosos?
8 Their seed is firmly established in their presence with them. their offspring are before their eyes.
8 Os seus filhos se estabelecem na sua presença; e os seus descendentes, diante dos seus olhos.
9 Their houses are at peace without any dread, and no rod of God cometh over them.
9 As suas casas têm paz e estão livres do medo; e a vara de Deus não os fustiga.
10 The bull of each one gendereth, and disappointeth not: the cow of each one calveth, and casteth not her young.
10 Os seus touros geram e não falham; as suas novilhas têm a cria e não abortam.
11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children skip about with joy.
11 Deixam as suas crianças correr como um rebanho; os seus filhos saltam de alegria.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.
12 Cantam com tamborim e harpa e alegram-se ao som da flauta.
13 They wear out their days in happiness, and in a moment they go down to the nether world.
13 Passam os seus dias em prosperidade e em paz descem à sepultura.”
14 And yet they say unto God, "Depart from us; and the knowledge of thy ways we desire not.
14 “E são estes os que se dirigem a Deus, dizendo: ‘Deixa-nos em paz. Não queremos conhecer os teus caminhos.
15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit shall we have, if we entreat him urgently?"
15 Quem é o Todo-Poderoso, para que o sirvamos? E o que ganhamos, se lhe fizermos orações?’
16 Lo, not in their hand doth their happiness rest! The counsel of the wicked be still far from me.
16 Vejam que não provém deles a sua prosperidade. Longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios!”
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked quenched? and how often cometh over them their calamity? and doth God distribute their lot in his anger?
17 “Quantas vezes se apaga a lâmpada dos ímpios? Quantas vezes lhes sobrevém a destruição? Quantas vezes Deus, na sua ira, os faz sofrer?
18 Are they as straw before the wind, and as chaff which the stealeth away?
18 Quantas vezes são como a palha diante do vento e como a poeira que é levada pela tempestade?”
19 Should God lay up for his children his wrongdoing? it were better that he reward him, that he might know it himself.
19 “Vocês dizem que Deus reserva o castigo do perverso para os filhos dele. Mas é ao perverso que Deus deveria punir, para que o sinta.
20 His own eyes ought to see his downfall, and from the wrath of the Almighty ought he to drink.
20 Seus próprios olhos devem ver a sua ruína; que ele beba do furor do Todo-Poderoso!
21 For what care hath he for his household after him, when the number of his months is all apportioned to him?
21 Porque depois de morto, e acabada a contagem dos seus meses, que interessa a ele a sua casa?
22 Is this fitting God, who teacheth knowledge? him who judgeth those that are highest?
22 Será que alguém pode ensinar algo a Deus, a ele que julga os que estão nos céus?”
23 That this one dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet;
23 “Um morre em pleno vigor, despreocupado e tranquilo,
24 His vessels being full of healthy fluid, and the marrow of his bones being well moistened:
24 com os seus baldes cheios de leite e os ossos repletos de tutano.
25 While this other dieth with an embittered soul, and hath never partaken of any happiness;
25 Outro, ao contrário, morre com o coração cheio de amargura, não havendo provado o bem.
26 And yet together they must lie down in the dust, and the worms will cover them?
26 Juntamente jazem no pó, onde os vermes os cobrem.”
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the opinions which ye wrongfully devise against me.
27 “Eis que eu conheço os pensamentos de vocês e os planos injustos que fazem para me prejudicar.
28 For ye say, Where is the house of the nobleminded? and where is the tent of the dwellingplaces of the wicked?
28 Porque vocês perguntam: ‘Onde está agora a casa do príncipe?’ E: ‘Onde ficou a tenda em que moravam os ímpios?’”
29 Have ye not asked the wayfarers? surely their token ye cannot disregard,
29 “Será que vocês nunca interrogaram os que viajam? E não levaram em conta as suas declarações,
30 That the bad man is reserved for the day of calamity, that the wicked are carried forward to the day of wrath.
30 que o mau é poupado no dia da calamidade, e é socorrido no dia do furor?
31 But who will tell him to his face of his way? and who will repay him what he hath done?
31 Quem lhe jogará na cara o que ele fez? Quem o fará pagar pelo que fez?
32 Yea he will indeed be carried to the grave, and men will quickly think of his monument:
32 Finalmente, é levado à sepultura, e sobre o seu túmulo se faz vigilância.
33 Sweet are to him the clods of the valley; and after him succeedeth every man, as those that were before him are without number.
33 A terra do vale que o cobre é leve; todos os homens o seguem, assim como são inumeráveis os que foram adiante dele.
34 How then will ye comfort me with vanity? and of your answers there remaineth only deception.
34 Como, então, vocês querem me consolar com palavras vazias? Nas respostas de vocês só há falsidade.”
