1 Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than a house full of feasting with strife.
1 Melhor é um bocado seco e tranquilidade do que a casa farta de carnes e contendas.
2 A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that dealeth shamefully, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
2 O escravo prudente dominará sobre o filho que causa vergonha e, entre os irmãos, terá parte na herança.
3 The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but the LORD trieth the hearts.
3 O crisol prova a prata, e o forno, o ouro; mas aos corações prova o
4 A evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
4 O malfazejo atenta para o lábio iníquo; o mentiroso inclina os ouvidos para a língua maligna.
5 Whoso mocketh the poor blasphemeth his Maker; and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
5 O que escarnece do pobre insulta ao que o criou; o que se alegra da calamidade não ficará impune.
6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
6 Coroa dos velhos são os filhos dos filhos; e a glória dos filhos são os pais.
7 Overbearing speech becometh not a churl; much less do lying lips a prince.
7 Ao insensato não convém a palavra excelente; quanto menos ao príncipe, o lábio mentiroso!
8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; whithersoever he turneth, he prospereth.
8 Pedra mágica é o suborno aos olhos de quem o dá, e para onde quer que se volte terá seu proveito.
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that harpeth on a matter estrangeth a familiar friend.
9 O que encobre a transgressão adquire amor, mas o que traz o assunto à baila separa os maiores amigos.
10 A rebuke entereth deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred stripes into a fool.
10 Mais fundo entra a repreensão no prudente do que cem açoites no insensato.
11 A rebellious man seeketh only evil; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
11 O rebelde não busca senão o mal; por isso, mensageiro cruel se enviará contra ele.
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
12 Melhor é encontrar-se uma ursa roubada dos filhos do que o insensato na sua estultícia.
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
13 Quanto àquele que paga o bem com o mal, não se apartará o mal da sua casa.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water; therefore leave off contention, before the quarrel break out.
14 Como o abrir-se da represa, assim é o começo da contenda; desiste, pois, antes que haja rixas.
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, even they both are an abomination to the LORD.
15 O que justifica o perverso e o que condena o justo abomináveis são para o
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he hath no understanding?
16 De que serviria o dinheiro na mão do insensato para comprar a sabedoria, visto que não tem entendimento?
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
17 Em todo tempo ama o amigo, e na angústia se faz o irmão.
18 A man void of understanding is he that striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his neighbour.
18 O homem falto de entendimento compromete-se, ficando por fiador do seu próximo.
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife; he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
19 O que ama a contenda ama o pecado; o que faz alta a sua porta facilita a própria queda.
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good; and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into evil.
20 O perverso de coração jamais achará o bem; e o que tem a língua dobre vem a cair no mal.
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; and the father of a churl hath no joy.
21 O filho estulto é tristeza para o pai, e o pai do insensato não se alegra.
22 A merry heart is a good medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
22 O coração alegre é bom remédio, mas o espírito abatido faz secar os ossos.
23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom, to pervert the ways of justice.
23 O perverso aceita suborno secretamente, para perverter as veredas da justiça.
24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
24 A sabedoria é o alvo do inteligente, mas os olhos do insensato vagam pelas extremidades da terra.
25 A foolish son is vexation to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
25 O filho insensato é tristeza para o pai e amargura para quem o deu à luz.
26 To punish also the righteous is not good, nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.
26 Não é bom punir ao justo; é contra todo direito ferir ao príncipe.
27 He that spareth his words hath knowledge; and he that husbandeth his spirit is a man of discernment.
27 Quem retém as palavras possui o conhecimento, e o sereno de espírito é homem de inteligência.
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed as a man of understanding.
28 Até o estulto, quando se cala, é tido por sábio, e o que cerra os lábios, por sábio.
