1 Since many people have attempted to write an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us,
1 Porquanto muitos já tentaram compilar um relato e pôr em ordem uma declaração daquelas coisas que certamente são cridas entre nós,
2 just as they were passed down to us by those who had been eyewitnesses and servants of the word from the beginning,
2 quando eles nos entregaram, os que desde o princípio foram testemunhas oculares e ministros da palavra,
3 I, too, have carefully investigated everything from the beginning and have decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
3 pareceu-me bem, também a mim, tendo perfeitamente compreendido primeiro todas as coisas, escrevê-las em ordem a ti, ó excelentíssimo Teófilo,
4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
4 para que possas conhecer a certeza destas coisas, nas quais tens sido instruído.
5 In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
5 Nos dias de Herodes, rei da Judeia, havia um certo sacerdote de nome Zacarias, da turma de Abias; e sua esposa era das filhas de Aarão, e o seu nome era Elizabete.
6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, and they lived blamelessly according to all of the commandments and regulations of the Lord.
6 E ambos eram justos diante de Deus, andando sem culpa em todos os mandamentos e ordenanças do Senhor; eram irrepreensíveis.
7 They had no children because Elizabeth was barren and because both of them were getting on in years.
7 E eles não tinham filho, porque Elizabete era estéril, e ambos eram avançados em idade.
8 When Zechariah was serving with his division of priests in God's presence,
8 E aconteceu que, enquanto ele exercia o sacerdócio perante Deus, na ordem da sua turma,
9 he was chosen by lot to go into the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense, according to the custom of the priests.
9 segundo o costume do sacerdócio, coube-lhe por sorte queimar incenso ao entrar no templo do Senhor.
10 And the entire congregation of people was praying outside at the time when the incense was burned.
10 E toda a multidão do povo estava orando do lado de fora, à hora do incenso.
11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the incense altar.
11 E ali lhe apareceu um anjo do Senhor, em pé, à direita do altar do incenso.
12 When Zechariah saw him, he was shaken, and fear overwhelmed him.
12 E quando Zacarias o viu, ficou perturbado, e o medo caiu sobre ele.
13 But the angel said to him, “Stop being afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to name him John.
13 Mas o anjo lhe disse: Não temas, Zacarias; porque a tua oração foi ouvida, e tua esposa Elizabete te dará um filho, e tu chamarás o seu nome de João.
14 You will have joy and gladness, and many people will rejoice at his birth.
14 E tu terás alegria e regozijo, e muitos se alegrarão com o seu nascimento.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will never drink wine or any strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
15 Porque ele será grande à vista do Senhor, e ele não beberá vinho, nem bebida forte, e ele será cheio do Espírito Santo, já desde o ventre de sua mãe.
16 He will bring many of Israel's descendants back to the Lord their God.
16 E converterá muitos dos filhos de Israel ao Senhor seu Deus.
17 He is the one who will go before the Lord with the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, and to prepare the people to be ready for the Lord.”
17 E irá adiante dele no espírito e no poder de Elias, para converter os corações dos pais aos filhos, e os desobedientes à prudência dos justos; tornar pronto um povo preparado para o Senhor.
18 Then Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I know this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.”
18 E Zacarias disse ao anjo: Como eu saberei isto? Porque eu sou um homem velho, e minha esposa avançada em idade.
19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
19 E, respondendo o anjo, disse-lhe: Eu sou Gabriel, que permaneço na presença de Deus, e sou enviado para falar-te, e para mostrar-te estas alegres notícias.
20 But because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at the proper time, you will become silent and unable to speak until the day this happens.”
20 E eis que tu ficarás mudo, e não poderás falar até o dia em que estas coisas se cumprirem, porque tu não creste nas minhas palavras, que se cumprirão ao seu tempo.
21 Meanwhile, the people kept waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed in the sanctuary so long.
21 E o povo esperava por Zacarias, e admiravam-se que ele demorasse tanto tempo no templo.
22 But when he did come out, he was unable to speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept motioning to them but remained unable to speak.
22 E quando ele saiu, não podia falar com eles, e perceberam que ele havia tido uma visão no templo; porque gesticulava para eles, e permanecia mudo.
23 When the days of his service were over, he went home.
23 E aconteceu que, tendo-se completado os dias do seu ministério, ele partiu para a sua própria casa.
24 After this, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and remained in seclusion for five months. She said,
24 E, depois daqueles dias, sua esposa Elizabete engravidou, e escondeu-se por cinco meses, dizendo:
25 “This is what the Lord did for me when he looked favorably on me and took away my public disgrace.”
25 Assim o Senhor fez comigo nos dias em que ele olhou para mim, para tirar a minha vergonha entre os homens.
26 Now in the sixth month of her pregnancy, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,
26 E, no sexto mês, o anjo Gabriel foi enviado por Deus a uma cidade da Galileia, chamada Nazaré,
27 to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.
27 para uma virgem desposada com um homem, cujo nome era José, da casa de Davi; e o nome da virgem era Maria.
28 The angel came to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you!”
28 E o anjo se aproximou dela, e disse: Salve, tu que és muito favorecida; o Senhor está contigo; bendita és tu entre as mulheres.
29 She was startled by his statement and tried to figure out what his greeting meant.
29 E, vendo-o, ela ficou perturbada com o que ele disse, e pôs-se a pensar que tipo de saudação seria essa.
30 Then the angel told her, “Stop being afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
30 E o anjo lhe disse: Não temas, Maria; porque tu achaste graça diante de Deus.
31 Listen! You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus.
31 E, eis que em teu ventre conceberás e darás à luz um filho, e lhe darás o nome de Jesus.
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his forefather David.
32 Ele será grande, e será chamado Filho do Altíssimo; e o Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de Davi, seu pai;
33 He will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”
33 e ele reinará sobre a casa de Jacó para sempre, e o seu reino não terá fim.
34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not had relations with a man?”
34 Então, disse Maria ao anjo: Como será isto, visto que eu não conheço homem algum?
35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come over you, and the power of the Most High will cover you. Therefore, the child will be holy and will be called the Son of God.
35 E, respondendo o anjo, disse-lhe: O Espírito Santo virá sobre ti, e o poder do Altíssimo fará sombra sobre ti; por isso também o santo nascido de ti será chamado Filho de Deus.
36 And listen! Elizabeth, your relative, has herself conceived a son in her old age. This is the sixth month for the woman who was said to be barren.
36 E, eis que tua prima Elizabete, também concebeu um filho em sua velhice; e este é o sexto mês para ela, que era chamada estéril.
37 For nothing is impossible for God.”
37 Porque com Deus nada será impossível.
38 Then Mary said, “Truly I am the Lord's servant. Let everything you have said happen to me.” Then the angel left her.
38 E disse Maria: Eis aqui a serva do Senhor; faça-se em mim segundo a tua palavra. E o anjo se ausentou.
39 At this time Mary set out hurriedly for a Judean city in the hill country.
39 E Maria se levantou naqueles dias, e foi apressadamente à região montanhosa, para uma cidade de Judá,
40 She went into Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth.
40 e entrou na casa de Zacarias, e saudou a Elizabete.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby jumped in her womb. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit
41 E aconteceu que, quando Elizabete ouviu a saudação de Maria, o bebê saltou no seu ventre, e Elizabete foi cheia com o Espírito Santo;
42 and exclaimed with a loud cry, “How blessed are you among women, and how blessed is the fruit of your womb!
42 e ela falou em alta voz, dizendo: Abençoada és tu entre as mulheres, e abençoado é o fruto do teu ventre.
43 Why should this happen to me, to have the mother of my Lord visit me!
43 E por que motivo isso é para mim, que a mãe do meu Senhor venha a mim?
44 For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb jumped for joy.
44 Pois, eis que assim que a voz da tua saudação soou aos meus ouvidos, o bebê saltou de alegria no meu ventre.
45 How blessed is this woman for believing that what was spoken to her by the Lord would be fulfilled!”
45 E abençoada a que creu; porque haverá cumprimento das coisas que foram ditas pelo Senhor.
46 Then Mary said, “My soul praises the greatness of the Lord!
46 E Maria disse: A minha alma engrandece ao Senhor,
47 My spirit exults in God, my Savior,
47 e o meu espírito regozijou-se em Deus meu Salvador.
48 for he has looked favorably on his humble servant. From now on, all generations will call me blessed,
48 Pois ele tem considerado a humildade de sua serva; porquanto, eis que daqui em diante todas as gerações me chamarão de abençoada.
49 because the Almighty has done great things for me.His name is holy.
49 Porque aquele que é poderoso me fez grandes coisas; e santo é o seu nome.
50 His mercy lasts from generation to generationfor those who fear him.
50 E a sua misericórdia está sobre os que o temem de geração em geração.
51 He displayed his mighty power with his arm. He scattered people who were proud in mind and heart.
51 Ele mostrou força com o seu braço; ele espalhou os orgulhosos na imaginação de seus corações.
52 He pulled powerful rulers from their thronesand lifted up humble people.
52 Ele derrubou os poderosos de seus assentos, e exaltou os humildes.
53 He filled hungry people with good thingsand sent rich people away with nothing.
53 Ele encheu de coisas boas os famintos, e ao rico ele enviou vazio.
54 He helped his servant Israel,remembering to be merciful,
54 Ele ajudou a seu servo Israel, em lembrança de sua misericórdia;
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors—to Abraham and his descendants forever.”
55 como ele falou a nossos pais, a Abraão e à sua semente para sempre.
56 Now Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home.
56 E Maria ficou com ela em torno de três meses, e depois voltou para sua própria casa.
57 When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a son.
57 Ora, completou-se o tempo de Elizabete para o parto; e ela teve um filho.
58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.
58 E os seus vizinhos e parentes ouviram que o Senhor tinha mostrado grande misericórdia sobre ela, e regozijaram-se com ela.
59 On the eighth day they went to circumcise the child. They were going to name him Zechariah after his father,
59 E aconteceu que, ao oitavo dia, eles vieram circuncidar o menino; e chamaram-no Zacarias, conforme o nome de seu pai.
60 but his mother said, “Absolutely not! He must be named John.”
60 E, respondendo sua mãe, disse: Não! Mas ele será chamado de João.
61 Their friends said to her, “None of your relatives has that name.”
61 E disseram-lhe: Não há ninguém na tua parentela que se chame por este nome.
62 So they motioned to the baby's father to see what he wanted to name him.
62 E eles fizeram sinais ao pai, como ele queria que o chamasse.
63 He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And everyone was amazed.
63 E, ele pedindo uma tábua de escrever, escreveu, dizendo: O seu nome é João. E todos se maravilharam.
64 Suddenly, Zechariah's mouth was opened, his tongue was set free, and he began to speak and to praise God.
64 E sua boca foi aberta imediatamente, e soltou-se sua língua; e ele falava, louvando a Deus.
65 Fear came over all their neighbors, and throughout the hill country of Judea all these things were being discussed.
65 E veio temor sobre todos os que moravam ao seu redor; e todos estes dizeres foram divulgados ao longo de toda região montanhosa da Judeia.
66 All who heard about it debated in their minds what had happened and said, “What will this child become?” For it was obvious that the hand of the Lord was with him.
66 E todos os que ouviam os colocavam no seu coração, dizendo: Que tipo de menino será esse? E a mão do Senhor estava com ele.
67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
67 E seu pai Zacarias ficou cheio com o Espírito Santo, e profetizou, dizendo:
68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel!He has taken care of his people and has set them free.
68 Bendito seja o Senhor Deus de Israel, porque tem visitado e redimido o seu povo,
69 He has raised up a mighty Savior for usfrom the family of his servant David,
69 e levantou para nós o chifre de salvação na casa de seu servo Davi,
70 just as he promised long ago through the mouth of his holy prophets
70 como ele falou pela boca dos seus santos profetas, desde o princípio do mundo;
71 that he would save us from our enemiesand from the grip of all who hate us.
71 para nos salvar dos nossos inimigos e da mão de todos os que nos odeiam,
72 He has shown mercy to our ancestorsand remembered his holy covenant,
72 para realizar a misericórdia prometida a nossos pais, e lembrar-se do seu santo pacto;
73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham. He granted us
73 e do juramento que ele prometeu a nosso pai Abraão,
74 deliverance from our enemies' gripso that we could serve him without fear
74 de nos conceder que, libertados da mão dos nossos inimigos, possamos servi-lo sem medo,
75 and be holy and righteous before him all of our days.
75 em santidade e justiça perante ele, todos os dias da nossa vida.
76 And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High. For you will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his ways
76 E tu, ó menino, serás chamado profeta do Altíssimo; porque tu irás ante a face do Senhor, para preparar os seus caminhos,
77 and to give his people the knowledge of salvationthrough the forgiveness of their sins.
77 para dar o conhecimento da salvação ao seu povo, pela remissão dos seus pecados,
78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,the dawn from on high has broken upon us,
78 mediante a terna misericórdia do nosso Deus, pela qual na aurora lá do alto nos visitou;
79 to shine on those who sit in darkness and in death's shadow,and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
79 para dar luz aos que estão assentados em trevas e na sombra da morte, para guiar os nossos pés no caminho da paz.
80 Now the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit. He lived in the wilderness until the day he appeared in Israel.
80 E o menino crescia, e se fortalecia no espírito, e estava nos desertos até ao dia da sua aparição a Israel.
