1 When thou sittest to eate with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee,
1 Quando você se assentar para comer com um governador, leve bem em conta quem está diante de você.
2 And put the knife to thy throte, if thou be a man giuen to the appetite.
2 Encoste uma faca na sua própria garganta, se você é glutão.
3 Be not desirous of his deintie meates: for it is a deceiuable meate.
3 Não cobice os pratos deliciosos que ele serve, porque essa comida é enganadora. — 7 —
4 Trauaile not too much to be rich: but cease from thy wisdome.
4 Não se fatigue para ficar rico; não aplique nisso a sua inteligência.
5 Wilt thou cast thine eyes vpon it, which is nothing? for riches taketh her to her wings, as an eagle, and flyeth into the heauen.
5 Você quer pôr os seus olhos naquilo que não é nada? Porque certamente a riqueza criará asas, como a águia que voa pelos céus. — 8 —
6 Eate thou not the bread of him that hath an euil eye, neither desire his deintie meates.
6 Não coma o pão do invejoso, nem cobice os seus pratos deliciosos.
7 For as though he thought it in his heart, so will hee say vnto thee, Eate and drinke: but his heart is not with thee.
7 Porque, como imagina em sua alma, assim ele é. Ele diz: “Coma e beba!”, mas não está sendo sincero.
8 Thou shalt vomit thy morsels that thou hast eaten, and thou shalt lose thy sweete wordes.
8 Você vomitará o bocado que comeu e terá desperdiçado as palavras amáveis que falou. — 9 —
9 Speake not in the eares of a foole: for hee will despise the wisdome of thy wordes.
9 Não fale com um tolo, porque ele desprezará a sabedoria das suas palavras. — 10 —
10 Remooue not the ancient boundes, and enter not into the fieldes of the fatherlesse.
10 Não remova os marcos antigos, nem entre nos campos dos órfãos,
11 For he that redeemeth them, is mightie: he will defend their cause against thee.
11 porque o Redentor deles é forte e defenderá a causa deles contra você. — 11 —
12 Apply thine heart to instruction, and thine eares to the wordes of knowledge.
12 Aplique o seu coração ao ensino e os seus ouvidos às palavras do conhecimento. — 12 —
13 Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.
13 Não deixe a criança sem disciplina, porque, se você a castigar com a vara, ela não morrerá.
14 Thou shalt smite him with the rodde, and shalt deliuer his soule from hell.
14 Você a castigará com a vara e livrará a alma dela do inferno. — 13 —
15 My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.
15 Meu filho, se o seu coração for sábio, também o meu coração se alegrará;
16 And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.
16 o meu íntimo exultará, quando os seus lábios falarem coisas retas. — 14 —
17 Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.
17 Não tenha inveja dos pecadores; pelo contrário, persevere no temor do todo tempo.
18 For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
18 Porque certamente haverá um futuro, e a sua esperança não será frustrada. — 15 —
19 O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
19 Escute, meu filho, e seja sábio; guie o seu coração no caminho reto.
20 Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
20 Não se junte com os beberrões nem com os comilões,
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.
21 porque os beberrões e os comilões acabam na pobreza, e a sonolência os levará a vestir trapos. — 16 —
22 Obey thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother when she is olde.
22 Escute o seu pai, que o gerou, e não despreze a sua mãe, quando ela envelhecer.
23 Bye the trueth, but sell it not: likewise wisdome, and instruction, and vnderstanding.
23 Compre a verdade e não a venda; compre a sabedoria, a instrução e o entendimento.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly reioyce, and hee that begetteth a wise childe, shall haue ioy of him.
24 O pai de um justo fica muito feliz, e quem gerar um filho sábio terá nele a sua alegria.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall reioyce.
25 Dê essa alegria ao seu pai e à sua mãe, e que se encha de felicidade aquela que o deu à luz. — 17 —
26 My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.
26 Meu filho, preste bem atenção no que eu digo, e que os seus olhos se agradem dos meus caminhos.
27 For a whore is as a deepe ditche, and a strange woman is as a narrowe pitte.
27 Pois uma prostituta é como uma cova profunda, e a mulher estranha é como um poço estreito.
28 Also she lyeth in wait as for a praye, and she increaseth the transgressers among men.
28 Como assaltante, ela fica à espreita e multiplica entre os homens os infiéis. — 18 —
29 To whome is woe? to whome is sorowe? to whom is strife? to whom is murmuring? to whom are woundes without cause? and to whome is the rednesse of the eyes?
29 Para quem são os ais? Para quem são os pesares? Para quem são as rixas? Para quem são as queixas? Para quem são os ferimentos sem motivo? E para quem são os olhos vermelhos?
30 Euen to them that tarie long at the wine, to them that goe, and seeke mixt wine.
30 Para os que se demoram em beber vinho, para os que andam buscando bebida misturada.
31 Looke not thou vpon the wine, when it is red, and when it sheweth his colour in the cup, or goeth downe pleasantly.
31 Não olhe para o vinho, quando se mostra vermelho, quando resplandece no copo e desce suavemente.
32 In the ende thereof it will bite like a serpent, and hurt like a cockatrise.
32 Pois no fim morderá como a cobra e picará como a víbora.
33 Thine eyes shall looke vpon strange women, and thine heart shall speake lewde things.
33 Os seus olhos verão coisas esquisitas, e o seu coração o levará a dizer coisas perversas.
34 And thou shalt bee as one that sleepeth in the middes of the sea, and as hee that sleepeth in the toppe of the maste.
34 Você será como o que se deita no meio do mar e como o que se deita no alto do mastro do navio.
35 They haue stricken mee, shalt thou say, but I was not sicke: they haue beaten mee, but I knew not, when I awoke: therefore will I seeke it yet still.
35 Você dirá: “Fui espancado, mas não doeu; bateram em mim, mas eu não senti nada! Quando vou despertar? Então voltarei a beber.”
