1 Truly there is a vein for silver, And a place for gold, which men refine.
1 Na verdade, a prata tem suas minas, e o ouro, que se refina, o seu lugar.
2 Iron is obtained from earth, And stone is melted into copper.
2 O ferro tira-se da terra, e da pedra se funde o cobre.
3 Man putteth an end to darkness; He searcheth to the lowest depths For the stone of darkness and the shadow of death.
3 Os homens põem termo à escuridão e até aos últimos confins procuram as pedras ocultas nas trevas e na densa escuridade.
4 From the place where they dwell they open a shaft; Forgotten by the feet, They hang down, they swing away from men.
4 Abrem entrada para minas longe da habitação dos homens, esquecidos dos transeuntes; e, assim, longe deles, dependurados, oscilam de um lado para outro.
5 The earth, out of which cometh bread, Is torn up underneath, as it were by fire.
5 Da terra procede o pão, mas embaixo é revolvida como por fogo.
6 Her stones are the place of sapphires, And she hath clods of gold for man.
6 Nas suas pedras se encontra safira, e há pó que contém ouro.
7 The path thereto no bird knoweth, And the vulture's eye hath not seen it;
7 Essa vereda, a ave de rapina a ignora, e jamais a viram os olhos do falcão.
8 The fierce wild beast hath not trodden it; The lion hath not passed over it.
8 Nunca a pisaram feras majestosas, nem o leãozinho passou por ela.
9 Man layeth his hand upon the rock; He upturneth mountains from their roots;
9 Estende o homem a mão contra o rochedo e revolve os montes desde as suas raízes.
10 He cleaveth out streams in the rocks, And his eye seeth every precious thing;
10 Abre canais nas pedras, e os seus olhos veem tudo o que há de mais precioso.
11 He bindeth up the streams, that they trickle not, And bringeth hidden things to light.
11 Tapa os veios de água, e nem uma gota sai deles, e traz à luz o que estava escondido.
12 But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
12 Mas onde se achará a sabedoria? E onde está o lugar do entendimento?
13 Man knoweth not the price thereof, Nor can it be found in the land of the living.
13 O homem não conhece o valor dela, nem se acha ela na terra dos viventes.
14 The deep saith, It is not in me; And the sea saith, It is not with me.
14 O abismo diz: Ela não está em mim; e o mar diz: Não está comigo.
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, Nor shall silver be weighed out as the price thereof.
15 Não se dá por ela ouro fino, nem se pesa prata em câmbio dela.
16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, With the precious onyx or the sapphire.
16 O seu valor não se pode avaliar pelo ouro de Ofir, nem pelo precioso ônix, nem pela safira.
17 Gold and crystal are not to be compared with it; Nor can it be purchased with jewels of fine gold.
17 O ouro não se iguala a ela, nem o cristal; ela não se trocará por joia de ouro fino;
18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; For wisdom is more precious than pearls.
18 ela faz esquecer o coral e o cristal; a aquisição da sabedoria é melhor que a das pérolas.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be purchased with pure gold.
19 Não se lhe igualará o topázio da Etiópia, nem se pode avaliar por ouro puro.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?
20 Donde, pois, vem a sabedoria, e onde está o lugar do entendimento?
21 Since it is hidden from the eyes of all living, And kept close from the fowls of the air.
21 Está encoberta aos olhos de todo vivente e oculta às aves do céu.
22 Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.
22 O abismo e a morte dizem: Ouvimos com os nossos ouvidos a sua fama.
23 God knoweth the way to it; He knoweth its dwelling-place.
23 Deus lhe entende o caminho, e ele é quem sabe o seu lugar.
24 For he seeth to the ends of the earth, And surveyeth all things under the whole heaven.
24 Porque ele perscruta até as extremidades da terra, vê tudo o que há debaixo dos céus.
25 When he gave the winds their weight, And meted out the waters by measure;
25 Quando regulou o peso do vento e fixou a medida das águas;
26 When he prescribed a law to the rain, And a path to the thunder-flash,—
26 quando determinou leis para a chuva e caminho para o relâmpago dos trovões,
27 Then did he see it, and make it known; He established it, and searched it out.
27 então, viu ele a sabedoria e a manifestou; estabeleceu-a e também a esquadrinhou.
28 But he said unto man, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.
28 E disse ao homem: Eis que o temor do Senhor é a sabedoria, e o apartar-se do mal é o entendimento.
