1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
1 Então respondeu Elifaz o temanita, e disse:
2 Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,
2 Porventura proferirá o sábio và sabedoria? E encherá do vento oriental o seu ventre,
3 Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?
3 Argüindo com palavras que de nada servem, e com razões, de que nada aproveita?
4 Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before *God.
4 E tu tens feito vão o temor, e diminuis os rogos diante de Deus.
5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
5 Porque a tua boca declara a tua iniqüidade; e tu escolhes a língua dos astutos.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.
6 A tua boca te condena, e não eu, e os teus lábios testificam contra ti.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?
7 És tu porventura o primeiro homem que nasceu? Ou foste formado antes dos outeiros?
8 Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?
8 Ou ouviste o secreto conselho de Deus e a ti só limitaste a sabedoria?
9 What knowest thou that we know not? {what} understandest thou which is not in us?
9 Que sabes tu, que nós não saibamos? Que entendes, que não haja em nós?
10 Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.
10 Também há entre nós encanecidos e idosos, muito mais idosos do que teu pai.
11 Are the consolations of *God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?
11 Porventura fazes pouco caso das consolações de Deus, e da suave palavra que te dirigimos?
12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?
12 Por que te arrebata o teu coração, e por que piscam os teus olhos?
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against *God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?
13 Para virares contra Deus o teu espírito, e deixares sair tais palavras da tua boca?
14 What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
14 Que é o homem, para que seja puro? E o que nasce da mulher, para ser justo?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:
15 Eis que ele não confia nos seus santos, e nem os céus são puros aos seus olhos.
16 How much less the abominable and corrupt, -man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!
16 Quanto mais abominável e corrupto é o homem que bebe a iniqüidade como a água?
17 I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;
17 Escuta-me, mostrar-te-ei; e o que tenho visto te contarei
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;
18 (O que os sábios anunciaram, ouvindo-o de seus pais, e o não ocultaram;
19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
19 Aos quais somente se dera a terra, e nenhum estranho passou por entre eles):
20 All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.
20 Todos os dias o ímpio é atormentado, e se reserva, para o tirano, um certo número de anos.
21 The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.
21 O sonido dos horrores está nos seus ouvidos; até na paz lhe sobrevém o assolador.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.
22 Não crê que tornará das trevas, mas que o espera a espada.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, -where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
23 Anda vagueando por pão, dizendo: Onde está? Bem sabe que já o dia das trevas lhe está preparado, à mão.
24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.
24 Assombram-no a angústia e a tribulação; prevalecem contra ele, como o rei preparado para a peleja;
25 For he hath stretched out his hand against *God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:
25 Porque estendeu a sua mão contra Deus, e contra o Todo-Poderoso se embraveceu.
26 He runneth against him, with {outstretched} neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;
26 Arremete contra ele com a dura cerviz, e contra os pontos grossos dos seus escudos.
27 For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon {his} flanks.
27 Porquanto cobriu o seu rosto com a sua gordura, e criou gordura nas ilhargas.
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.
28 E habitou em cidades assoladas, em casas em que ninguém morava, que estavam a ponto de fazer-se montões de ruínas.
29 He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.
29 Não se enriquecerá, nem subsistirá a sua fazenda, nem se estenderão pela terra as suas possessões.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
30 Não escapará das trevas; a chama do fogo secará os seus renovos, e ao sopro da sua boca desaparecerá.
31 Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;
31 Não confie, pois, na vaidade, enganando-se a si mesmo, porque a vaidade será a sua recompensa.
32 It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.
32 Antes do seu dia ela se consumará; e o seu ramo não reverdecerá.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.
33 Sacudirá as suas uvas verdes, como as da vide, e deixará cair a sua flor como a oliveira,
34 For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
34 Porque a congregação dos hipócritas se fará estéril, e o fogo consumirá as tendas do suborno.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
35 Concebem a malícia, e dão à luz a iniqüidade, e o seu ventre prepara enganos.
