1 Then LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
1 Então, do seio da tempestade, o Senhor deu a Jó esta resposta:
2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
2 Quem é aquele que obscurece assim a Providência com discursos sem inteligência?
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man, for I will demand of thee, and declare thou to me.
3 Cinge os teus rins como um homem; vou interrogar-te e tu me responderás.
4 Where were thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou have understanding.
4 Onde estavas quando lancei os fundamentos da terra? Fala, se estiveres informado disso.
5 Who determined the measures of it, if thou know? Or who stretched the line upon it?
5 Quem lhe tomou as medidas, já que o sabes? Quem sobre ela estendeu o cordel?
6 Upon what were the foundations of it fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone of it
6 Sobre que repousam suas bases? Quem colocou nela a pedra de ângulo,
7 when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
7 sob os alegres concertos dos astros da manhã, sob as aclamações de todos os filhos de Deus?
8 Or [who] shut up the sea with doors when it broke forth, [like] it had issued out of the womb,
8 Quem fechou com portas o mar, quando brotou do seio maternal,
9 when I made clouds the garment of it, and thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,
9 quando lhe dei as nuvens por vestimenta, e o enfaixava com névoas tenebrosas;
10 and marked out for it my bound, and set bars and doors,
10 quando lhe tracei limites, e lhe pus portas e ferrolhos,
11 and said, This far thou shall come, but no further, and here thy proud waves shall be stayed?
11 dizendo: Chegarás até aqui, não irás mais longe; aqui se deterá o orgulho de tuas ondas?
12 Have thou commanded the morning since thy days [began], [and] caused the dayspring to know its place
12 Algum dia na vida deste ordens à manhã? Indicaste à aurora o seu lugar,
13 that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?
13 para que ela alcançasse as extremidades da terra, e dela sacudisse os maus,
14 It is changed as clay under the seal, and [all things] stand forth as a garment.
14 para que ela tome forma como a argila de sinete e tome cor como um vestido,
15 And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm is broken.
15 para que seja recusada aos maus a sua luz, e sejam quebrados seus braços já erguidos?
16 Have thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or have thou walked in the recesses of the deep?
16 Foste até as fontes do mar? Passaste até o fundo do abismo?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to thee? Or have thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?
17 Apareceram-te, porventura, as portas da morte? Viste, por acaso, as portas da tenebrosa morada?
18 Have thou comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if thou know it all.
18 Abraçaste com o olhar a extensão da terra? Fala, se sabes tudo isso!
19 Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And as for darkness, where is the place of it
19 Qual é o caminho da morada luminosa? Onde é a residência das trevas?
20 that thou should take it to the bound of it, and that thou should discern the paths to the house of it?
20 Poderias alcançá-la em seu domínio, e reconhecer as veredas de sua morada?
21 Thou know, for thou were born then, and the number of thy days is great!
21 Deverias sabê-lo, pois já tinhas nascido: são tão numerosos os teus dias!
22 Have thou entered the treasuries of the snow, or have thou seen the treasures of the hail,
22 Penetraste nos depósitos da neve? Visitaste os armazéns dos granizos,
23 which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
23 que reservo para os tempos de tormento, para os dias de luta e de batalha?
24 By what way is the light divided, or the east wind scattered upon the earth?
24 Por que caminho se espalha o nevoeiro, e o vento do oriente se expande pela terra?
25 Who has cleft a channel for the water flood, or the way for the lightning of the thunder,
25 Quem abre um canal para os aguaceiros, e uma rota para o relâmpago,
26 to cause it to rain on a land where no man is, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
26 para fazer chover sobre uma terra desabitada, sobre um deserto sem seres humanos,
27 to satisfy the waste and desolate [ground], and to cause the tender grass to spring forth?
27 para regar regiões vastas e desoladas, para nelas fazer germinar a erva verdejante?
28 Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
28 Terá a chuva um pai? Quem gera as gotas do orvalho?
29 Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who has engendered it?
29 De que seio sai o gelo, quem engendra a geada do céu,
30 The waters hide themselves [and become] like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
30 quando endurecem as águas como a pedra, e se torna sólida a superfície do abismo?
31 Can thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
31 És tu que atas os laços das Plêiades, ou que desatas as correntes do Órion?
32 Can thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or can thou guide the Bear with her train?
32 És tu que fazes sair a seu tempo as constelações, e conduzes a grande Ursa com seus filhinhos?
33 Do thou know the ordinances of the heavens? Can thou establish the dominion of it on the earth?
33 Conheces as leis do céu, regulas sua influência sobre a terra?
34 Can thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
34 Levantarás a tua voz até as nuvens, e o dilúvio te obedecerá?
35 Can thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, and say to thee, Here we are?
35 Tua ordem fará os relâmpagos surgirem, e dir-te-ão eles: Eis-nos aqui?
36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
36 Quem pôs a sabedoria nas nuvens, e a inteligência no meteoro?
37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven
37 Quem pode enumerar as nuvens, e inclinar as urnas do céu,
38 when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods cleave fast together?
38 para que a poeira se mova em massa compacta, e os seus torrões se aglomerem?
39 Can thou hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions
39 És tu que caças a presa para a leoa, e que satisfazes a fome dos leõezinhos
40 when they couch in their dens, [and] abide in the covert to lie in wait?
40 quando estão deitados em seus covis, ou quando se emboscam nas covas?
41 Who provides for the raven his prey when his young ones cry to God, [and] wander for lack of food?
41 Quem prepara ao corvo o seu sustento, quando seus filhinhos gritam para Deus, quando andam de um lado para outro sem comida?
