1 My friends, are you really trying to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the worship of rank?
1 Meus irmãos, como podem afirmar que têm fé em nosso glorioso Senhor Jesus Cristo se mostram favorecimento a algumas pessoas?
2 Suppose a visitor should enter your synagogue, with gold rings and in grand clothes, and suppose a poor man should come in also, in shabby clothes,
2 Se, por exemplo, alguém chegar a uma de suas reuniões vestido com roupas elegantes e usando joias caras, e também entrar um pobre com roupas sujas,
3 and you are deferential to the visitor who is wearing grand clothes, and say — “There is a good seat for you here,” but to the poor man — “You must stand; or sit down there by my footstool,”
3 e vocês derem atenção ao que está bem vestido, dizendo-lhe: “Sente-se aqui neste lugar especial”, mas disserem ao pobre: “Fique em pé ali ou sente-se aqui no chão”,
4 Is not that to make distinctions among yourselves, and show yourselves prejudiced judges?
4 essa discriminação não mostrará que agem como juízes guiados por motivos perversos?
5 Listen, my dear friends. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the things of this world to be rich through their faith, and to possess the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?
5 Ouçam, meus amados irmãos: não foi Deus que escolheu os pobres deste mundo para serem ricos na fé? Não são eles os herdeiros do reino prometido àqueles que o amam?
6 But you — you insult the poor man! Is not it the rich who oppress you? Is not it they who drag you into law courts?
6 Mas vocês desprezam os pobres! Não são os ricos que oprimem vocês e os arrastam aos tribunais?
7 Is not it they who malign that honorable name which has been bestowed on you?
7 Não são eles que difamam aquele cujo nome honroso vocês carregam?
8 Yet, if you keep the royal law which runs — ‘You must love your neighbor as you love yourself,’ you are doing right;
8 Sem dúvida vocês fazem bem quando obedecem à lei do reino conforme dizem as Escrituras: “Ame seu próximo como a si mesmo”.
9 but, if you worship rank, you commit a sin, and stand convicted by that same law of being offenders against it.
9 Mas, se mostram favorecimento a algumas pessoas, cometem pecado e são culpados de transgredir a lei.
10 For a person who has laid the law, as a whole, to heart, but has failed in one particular, is accountable for breaking all its provisions.
10 Pois quem obedece a todas as leis, exceto uma, torna-se culpado de desobedecer a todas as outras.
11 He who said ‘You must not commit adultery’ also said ‘You must not murder.’ If, then, you commit murder but not adultery, you are still an offender against the law.
11 Pois aquele que disse: “Não cometa adultério”, também disse: “Não mate”. Logo, mesmo que não cometam adultério, se matarem alguém, transgredirão a lei.
12 Therefore, speak and act as people who are to be judged by the ‘law of freedom.’
12 Portanto, em tudo que disserem e fizerem, lembrem-se de que serão julgados pela lei que os liberta.
13 For there will be justice without mercy for the person who has not acted mercifully. Mercy triumphs over Justice.
13 Não haverá misericórdia para quem não tiver demonstrado misericórdia. Mas, se forem misericordiosos, haverá misericórdia quando forem julgados.
14 My friends, what is the good of a person’s saying that they have faith, if they do not prove it by actions? Can such faith save them?
14 De que adianta, meus irmãos, dizerem que têm fé se não a demonstram por meio de suas ações? Acaso esse tipo de fé pode salvar alguém?
15 Suppose some brother or sister should be in need of clothes and of daily bread,
15 Se um irmão ou uma irmã necessitar de alimento ou de roupa,
16 and one of you were to say to them — “Go, and peace be with you; find warmth and food for yourselves,” and yet you were not to give them the necessaries of life, what good would it be to them?
16 e vocês disserem: “Até logo e tenha um bom dia; aqueça-se e coma bem”, mas não lhe derem alimento nem roupa, em que isso ajuda?
17 In just the same way faith, if not followed by actions, is, by itself, a lifeless thing.
17 Como veem, a fé por si mesma, a menos que produza boas obras, está morta.
18 Some one, indeed, may say — “You are a man of faith, and I am a man of action.” “Then show me your faith,” I reply, “apart from any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions.”
18 Mas alguém pode argumentar: “Uns têm fé; outros têm obras”. Mostre-me sua fé sem obras e eu, pelas minhas obras, lhe mostrarei minha fé!
19 It is a part of your faith, is it not, that there is one God? Good; yet even the demons have that faith, and tremble at the thought.
19 Você diz crer que há um único Deus. Muito bem! Até os demônios creem nisso e tremem de medo.
20 Now do you really want to understand, fool, how it is that faith without actions leads to nothing?
20 Quanta insensatez! Vocês não entendem que a fé sem as obras é inútil?
21 Look at our ancestor, Abraham. Was not it the result of his actions that he was pronounced righteous after he had offered his son, Isaac, on the altar?
21 Não lembram que nosso antepassado Abraão foi declarado justo por suas ações quando ofereceu seu filho Isaque sobre o altar?
22 You see how, in his case, faith and actions went together; that his faith was perfected as the result of his actions;
22 Como veem, sua fé e suas ações atuaram juntas e, assim, as ações tornaram a fé completa.
23 and that in this way the words of scripture came true — “Abraham believed God, and that was regarded by God as righteousness,” and “He was called the friend of God.”
23 E aconteceu exatamente como as Escrituras dizem: “Abraão creu em Deus, e assim foi considerado justo”. Ele até foi chamado amigo de Deus!
24 You see, then, that it is as the result of their actions that a person is pronounced righteous, and not of their faith only.
24 Vejam que somos declarados justos pelo que fazemos, e não apenas pela fé.
25 Was not it the same with the prostitute, Rahab? Was not it as the result of her actions that she was pronounced righteous, after she had welcomed the messengers and helped them escape by?
25 Raabe, a prostituta, é outro exemplo. Ela foi declarada justa por causa de suas ações quando escondeu os mensageiros e os fez sair em segurança por um caminho diferente.
26 Exactly as a body is dead without a spirit, so faith is dead without actions.
26 Assim como o corpo sem fôlego está morto, também a fé sem obras está morta.
