1 My friends, are you really trying to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the worship of rank?
1 Meus irmãos, não tenhais a fé em nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, Senhor da glória, em acepção de pessoas.
2 Suppose a visitor should enter your synagogue, with gold rings and in grand clothes, and suppose a poor man should come in also, in shabby clothes,
2 Se, portanto, entrar na vossa sinagoga algum homem com anéis de ouro nos dedos, em trajos de luxo, e entrar também algum pobre andrajoso,
3 and you are deferential to the visitor who is wearing grand clothes, and say — “There is a good seat for you here,” but to the poor man — “You must stand; or sit down there by my footstool,”
3 e tratardes com deferência o que tem os trajos de luxo e lhe disserdes: Tu, assenta-te aqui em lugar de honra; e disserdes ao pobre: Tu, fica ali em pé ou assenta-te aqui abaixo do estrado dos meus pés,
4 Is not that to make distinctions among yourselves, and show yourselves prejudiced judges?
4 não fizestes distinção entre vós mesmos e não vos tornastes juízes tomados de perversos pensamentos?
5 Listen, my dear friends. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the things of this world to be rich through their faith, and to possess the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?
5 Ouvi, meus amados irmãos. Não escolheu Deus os que para o mundo são pobres, para serem ricos em fé e herdeiros do reino que ele prometeu aos que o amam?
6 But you — you insult the poor man! Is not it the rich who oppress you? Is not it they who drag you into law courts?
6 Entretanto, vós outros menosprezastes o pobre. Não são os ricos que vos oprimem e não são eles que vos arrastam para tribunais?
7 Is not it they who malign that honorable name which has been bestowed on you?
7 Não são eles os que blasfemam o bom nome que sobre vós foi invocado?
8 Yet, if you keep the royal law which runs — ‘You must love your neighbor as you love yourself,’ you are doing right;
8 Se vós, contudo, observais a lei régia segundo a Escritura: Amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo, fazeis bem;
9 but, if you worship rank, you commit a sin, and stand convicted by that same law of being offenders against it.
9 se, todavia, fazeis acepção de pessoas, cometeis pecado, sendo arguidos pela lei como transgressores.
10 For a person who has laid the law, as a whole, to heart, but has failed in one particular, is accountable for breaking all its provisions.
10 Pois qualquer que guarda toda a lei, mas tropeça em um só ponto, se torna culpado de todos.
11 He who said ‘You must not commit adultery’ also said ‘You must not murder.’ If, then, you commit murder but not adultery, you are still an offender against the law.
11 Porquanto, aquele que disse: Não adulterarás também ordenou: Não matarás. Ora, se não adulteras, porém matas, vens a ser transgressor da lei.
12 Therefore, speak and act as people who are to be judged by the ‘law of freedom.’
12 Falai de tal maneira e de tal maneira procedei como aqueles que hão de ser julgados pela lei da liberdade.
13 For there will be justice without mercy for the person who has not acted mercifully. Mercy triumphs over Justice.
13 Porque o juízo é sem misericórdia para com aquele que não usou de misericórdia. A misericórdia triunfa sobre o juízo.
14 My friends, what is the good of a person’s saying that they have faith, if they do not prove it by actions? Can such faith save them?
14 Meus irmãos, qual é o proveito, se alguém disser que tem fé, mas não tiver obras? Pode, acaso, semelhante fé salvá-lo?
15 Suppose some brother or sister should be in need of clothes and of daily bread,
15 Se um irmão ou uma irmã estiverem carecidos de roupa e necessitados do alimento cotidiano,
16 and one of you were to say to them — “Go, and peace be with you; find warmth and food for yourselves,” and yet you were not to give them the necessaries of life, what good would it be to them?
16 e qualquer dentre vós lhes disser: Ide em paz, aquecei-vos e fartai-vos, sem, contudo, lhes dar o necessário para o corpo, qual é o proveito disso?
17 In just the same way faith, if not followed by actions, is, by itself, a lifeless thing.
17 Assim, também a fé, se não tiver obras, por si só está morta.
18 Some one, indeed, may say — “You are a man of faith, and I am a man of action.” “Then show me your faith,” I reply, “apart from any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions.”
18 Mas alguém dirá: Tu tens fé, e eu tenho obras; mostra-me essa tua fé sem as obras, e eu, com as obras, te mostrarei a minha fé.
19 It is a part of your faith, is it not, that there is one God? Good; yet even the demons have that faith, and tremble at the thought.
19 Crês, tu, que Deus é um só? Fazes bem. Até os demônios creem e tremem.
20 Now do you really want to understand, fool, how it is that faith without actions leads to nothing?
20 Queres, pois, ficar certo, ó homem insensato, de que a fé sem as obras é inoperante?
21 Look at our ancestor, Abraham. Was not it the result of his actions that he was pronounced righteous after he had offered his son, Isaac, on the altar?
21 Não foi por obras que Abraão, o nosso pai, foi justificado, quando ofereceu sobre o altar o próprio filho, Isaque?
22 You see how, in his case, faith and actions went together; that his faith was perfected as the result of his actions;
22 Vês como a fé operava juntamente com as suas obras; com efeito, foi pelas obras que a fé se consumou,
23 and that in this way the words of scripture came true — “Abraham believed God, and that was regarded by God as righteousness,” and “He was called the friend of God.”
23 e se cumpriu a Escritura, a qual diz: Ora, Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi imputado para justiça; e: Foi chamado amigo de Deus.
24 You see, then, that it is as the result of their actions that a person is pronounced righteous, and not of their faith only.
24 Verificais que uma pessoa é justificada por obras e não por fé somente.
25 Was not it the same with the prostitute, Rahab? Was not it as the result of her actions that she was pronounced righteous, after she had welcomed the messengers and helped them escape by?
25 De igual modo, não foi também justificada por obras a meretriz Raabe, quando acolheu os emissários e os fez partir por outro caminho?
26 Exactly as a body is dead without a spirit, so faith is dead without actions.
26 Porque, assim como o corpo sem espírito é morto, assim também a fé sem obras é morta.
