1 My friends, are you really trying to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the worship of rank?
1 Meus irmãos, não tenhais a fé de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, o Senhor da glória, com acepção de pessoas.
2 Suppose a visitor should enter your synagogue, with gold rings and in grand clothes, and suppose a poor man should come in also, in shabby clothes,
2 Porque se vier à vossa assembleia um homem com um anel de ouro, em bons trajes, e entrar também um homem pobre com vestes imundas,
3 and you are deferential to the visitor who is wearing grand clothes, and say — “There is a good seat for you here,” but to the poor man — “You must stand; or sit down there by my footstool,”
3 e mostrardes respeito ao que veste bons trajes, e lhe disserdes: Assenta-te tu aqui em um bom lugar; e disserdes ao pobre: Fica tu em pé, ou assenta-te abaixo do meu estrado.
4 Is not that to make distinctions among yourselves, and show yourselves prejudiced judges?
4 Não estais sendo parciais entre vós mesmos, e não vos tornastes juízes de maus pensamentos?
5 Listen, my dear friends. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the things of this world to be rich through their faith, and to possess the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?
5 Ouvi, meus amados irmãos: Porventura não escolheu Deus aos pobres deste mundo para serem ricos na fé, e herdeiros do reino que prometeu àqueles que o amam?
6 But you — you insult the poor man! Is not it the rich who oppress you? Is not it they who drag you into law courts?
6 Mas vós desprezastes o pobre. Não vos oprimem os homens ricos, e não vos levam aos bancos dos réus?
7 Is not it they who malign that honorable name which has been bestowed on you?
7 Porventura não blasfemam eles o nome digno pelo qual fostes chamados?
8 Yet, if you keep the royal law which runs — ‘You must love your neighbor as you love yourself,’ you are doing right;
8 Se cumprirdes a lei real, conforme a escritura: Amarás a teu próximo como a ti mesmo, fazeis bem.
9 but, if you worship rank, you commit a sin, and stand convicted by that same law of being offenders against it.
9 Mas, se fazeis acepção de pessoas, cometeis pecado, e sois condenados pela lei como transgressores.
10 For a person who has laid the law, as a whole, to heart, but has failed in one particular, is accountable for breaking all its provisions.
10 Porque qualquer que guardar toda a lei, e errar em um só ponto, tornou-se culpado de todos.
11 He who said ‘You must not commit adultery’ also said ‘You must not murder.’ If, then, you commit murder but not adultery, you are still an offender against the law.
11 Porque aquele que disse: Não cometerás adultério, também disse: Não assassinarás. Ora, se tu pois não cometeres adultério, mas matares, és transgressor da lei.
12 Therefore, speak and act as people who are to be judged by the ‘law of freedom.’
12 Assim falai, e assim procedei, como os que hão de ser julgados pela lei da liberdade.
13 For there will be justice without mercy for the person who has not acted mercifully. Mercy triumphs over Justice.
13 Porque receberá o juízo sem misericórdia, aquele que não mostrou misericórdia; e a misericórdia triunfa sobre o juízo.
14 My friends, what is the good of a person’s saying that they have faith, if they do not prove it by actions? Can such faith save them?
14 Pois qual é o proveito, meus irmãos, se um homem disser que tem fé, e não tiver as obras? Poderá a fé salvá-lo?
15 Suppose some brother or sister should be in need of clothes and of daily bread,
15 Se uma irmã ou um irmão estiverem nus, carentes do alimento diário,
16 and one of you were to say to them — “Go, and peace be with you; find warmth and food for yourselves,” and yet you were not to give them the necessaries of life, what good would it be to them?
16 e algum de vós lhe disser: Ide em paz, aquentai-vos, e fartai-vos; e não lhes derdes as coisas necessárias para o corpo, qual será o proveito?
17 In just the same way faith, if not followed by actions, is, by itself, a lifeless thing.
17 Assim é a fé, se não tiver as obras, é morta em si mesma.
18 Some one, indeed, may say — “You are a man of faith, and I am a man of action.” “Then show me your faith,” I reply, “apart from any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions.”
18 Porquanto o homem pode dizer: Tu tens a fé, e eu tenho as obras; mostra-me a tua fé sem as tuas obras, e eu te mostrarei a minha fé pelas minhas obras.
19 It is a part of your faith, is it not, that there is one God? Good; yet even the demons have that faith, and tremble at the thought.
19 Tu crês que há um só Deus; fazes bem; os demônios também creem, e tremem.
20 Now do you really want to understand, fool, how it is that faith without actions leads to nothing?
20 Porém, ó homem vão, queres tu saber que a fé sem as obras está morta?
21 Look at our ancestor, Abraham. Was not it the result of his actions that he was pronounced righteous after he had offered his son, Isaac, on the altar?
21 Porventura não foi Abraão, nosso pai, justificado pelas obras, quando ofereceu Isaque, o seu filho, sobre o altar?
22 You see how, in his case, faith and actions went together; that his faith was perfected as the result of his actions;
22 Vede que a fé operou com as suas obras, e que pelas suas obras a fé foi aperfeiçoada?
23 and that in this way the words of scripture came true — “Abraham believed God, and that was regarded by God as righteousness,” and “He was called the friend of God.”
23 E a escritura cumpriu-se, a qual diz: E Abraão creu em Deus, e foi-lhe isso imputado como justiça, e ele foi chamado o Amigo de Deus.
24 You see, then, that it is as the result of their actions that a person is pronounced righteous, and not of their faith only.
24 Vede então como que, pelas obras, o homem é justificado, e não pela fé somente.
25 Was not it the same with the prostitute, Rahab? Was not it as the result of her actions that she was pronounced righteous, after she had welcomed the messengers and helped them escape by?
25 E de igual modo, não foi também Raabe, a prostituta, justificada pelas obras, quando recebeu os mensageiros, e os enviou por outro caminho?
26 Exactly as a body is dead without a spirit, so faith is dead without actions.
26 Porque assim como o corpo sem o espírito está morto, assim também a fé sem obras é morta.
