1 My friends, are you really trying to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the worship of rank?
1 Meus irmãos, vocês não podem ter fé em nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, o Senhor da glória, e ao mesmo tempo tratar as pessoas com parcialidade.
2 Suppose a visitor should enter your synagogue, with gold rings and in grand clothes, and suppose a poor man should come in also, in shabby clothes,
2 Porque, se entrar na sinagoga de vocês um homem com anéis de ouro nos dedos, vestindo roupa luxuosa, e entrar também um pobre muito malvestido,
3 and you are deferential to the visitor who is wearing grand clothes, and say — “There is a good seat for you here,” but to the poor man — “You must stand; or sit down there by my footstool,”
3 e vocês derem um tratamento especial ao que está vestido com a roupa luxuosa, dizendo: “Você, sente-se aqui no lugar de honra”, e disserem ao pobre: “Você, fique em pé” ou “Sente-se ali, abaixo do estrado dos meus pés”,
4 Is not that to make distinctions among yourselves, and show yourselves prejudiced judges?
4 será que vocês não estarão fazendo distinção entre vocês mesmos e julgando as pessoas com critérios errados?
5 Listen, my dear friends. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the things of this world to be rich through their faith, and to possess the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?
5 Escutem, meus amados irmãos. Por acaso Deus não escolheu os que para o mundo são pobres para serem ricos em fé e herdeiros do Reino que ele prometeu aos que o amam?
6 But you — you insult the poor man! Is not it the rich who oppress you? Is not it they who drag you into law courts?
6 No entanto, vocês desprezam os pobres. Por acaso não são os ricos que oprimem vocês e não são eles que os arrastam para os tribunais?
7 Is not it they who malign that honorable name which has been bestowed on you?
7 Não são eles os que blasfemam o bom nome que foi invocado sobre vocês?
8 Yet, if you keep the royal law which runs — ‘You must love your neighbor as you love yourself,’ you are doing right;
8 Se vocês, de fato, observam a lei do Reino, conforme está na Escritura: “Ame o seu próximo como a si mesmo”, fazem bem.
9 but, if you worship rank, you commit a sin, and stand convicted by that same law of being offenders against it.
9 Se, no entanto, vocês tratam as pessoas com parcialidade, cometem pecado, sendo condenados pela lei como transgressores.
10 For a person who has laid the law, as a whole, to heart, but has failed in one particular, is accountable for breaking all its provisions.
10 Pois quem guarda toda a lei, mas tropeça em um só ponto, se torna culpado de todos.
11 He who said ‘You must not commit adultery’ also said ‘You must not murder.’ If, then, you commit murder but not adultery, you are still an offender against the law.
11 Porque, aquele que disse: “Não cometa adultério”, também ordenou: “Não mate.” Ora, se você não comete adultério, porém mata, acaba sendo transgressor da lei.
12 Therefore, speak and act as people who are to be judged by the ‘law of freedom.’
12 Assim, falem e vivam como pessoas que serão julgadas pela lei da liberdade.
13 For there will be justice without mercy for the person who has not acted mercifully. Mercy triumphs over Justice.
13 Porque o juízo é sem misericórdia sobre quem não usou de misericórdia. A misericórdia triunfa sobre o juízo.
14 My friends, what is the good of a person’s saying that they have faith, if they do not prove it by actions? Can such faith save them?
14 Meus irmãos, qual é o proveito, se alguém disser que tem fé, mas não tiver obras? Será que essa fé pode salvá-lo?
15 Suppose some brother or sister should be in need of clothes and of daily bread,
15 Se um irmão ou uma irmã estiverem com falta de roupa e necessitando do alimento diário,
16 and one of you were to say to them — “Go, and peace be with you; find warmth and food for yourselves,” and yet you were not to give them the necessaries of life, what good would it be to them?
16 e um de vocês lhes disser: “Vão em paz! Tratem de se aquecer e de se alimentar bem”, mas não lhes dão o necessário para o corpo, qual é o proveito disso?
17 In just the same way faith, if not followed by actions, is, by itself, a lifeless thing.
17 Assim, também a fé, se não tiver obras, por si só está morta.
18 Some one, indeed, may say — “You are a man of faith, and I am a man of action.” “Then show me your faith,” I reply, “apart from any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions.”
18 Mas alguém dirá: “Você tem fé, e eu tenho obras.” Mostre-me essa sua fé sem as obras, e eu, com as obras, lhe mostrarei a minha fé.
19 It is a part of your faith, is it not, that there is one God? Good; yet even the demons have that faith, and tremble at the thought.
19 Você crê que Deus é um só? Faz muito bem! Até os demônios creem e tremem.
20 Now do you really want to understand, fool, how it is that faith without actions leads to nothing?
20 Seu tolo, você quer ter certeza de que a fé sem as obras é inútil?
21 Look at our ancestor, Abraham. Was not it the result of his actions that he was pronounced righteous after he had offered his son, Isaac, on the altar?
21 Por acaso não foi pelas obras que Abraão, o nosso pai, foi justificado, quando ofereceu o seu filho Isaque sobre o altar?
22 You see how, in his case, faith and actions went together; that his faith was perfected as the result of his actions;
22 Você percebe que a fé operava juntamente com as suas obras e que foi pelas obras que a fé se consumou.
23 and that in this way the words of scripture came true — “Abraham believed God, and that was regarded by God as righteousness,” and “He was called the friend of God.”
23 E se cumpriu a Escritura, que diz: “Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi atribuído para justiça”, e ele foi chamado amigo de Deus.
24 You see, then, that it is as the result of their actions that a person is pronounced righteous, and not of their faith only.
24 Assim, vocês percebem que uma pessoa é justificada pelas obras e não somente pela fé.
25 Was not it the same with the prostitute, Rahab? Was not it as the result of her actions that she was pronounced righteous, after she had welcomed the messengers and helped them escape by?
25 De igual modo, será que não foi também pelas obras que a prostituta Raabe foi justificada, quando acolheu os emissários e os fez partir por outro caminho?
26 Exactly as a body is dead without a spirit, so faith is dead without actions.
26 Porque, assim como o corpo sem espírito é morto, assim também a fé sem obras é morta.
