1 I reached an agreement with my eyes, that I would not so much as think about a virgin.
1 “Eu jurei que os meus olhos nunca haveriam de cobiçar uma virgem.
2 For what portion should God from above hold for me, and what inheritance should the Almighty from on high keep?
2 Se eu tivesse quebrado o juramento, que recompensa Deus me daria, e como é que lá dos céus o Todo-Poderoso me abençoaria?
3 Is not destruction held for the wicked and repudiation kept for those who work injustice?
3 Pois Deus manda a infelicidade e a desgraça para aqueles que só fazem o mal.
4 Does he not examine my ways and number all my steps?
4 Deus sabe tudo o que eu faço; ele vê cada passo que dou.
5 If I have walked in vanity, or if my foot has hurried towards deceitfulness,
5 “Juro que não tenho sido falso e que nunca procurei enganar os outros.
6 let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.
6 Que Deus me pese numa balança justa e ele ficará convencido de que sou inocente!
7 If my steps have turned aside from the way, or if my heart has followed my eyes, or if a blemish has clung to my hands,
7 “Se por acaso me desviei do caminho certo, se o meu coração foi levado pela cobiça dos olhos, se pequei, ficando com qualquer coisa que pertence a outra pessoa,
8 then may I sow, and let another consume, and let my offspring be eradicated.
8 então que outros comam o que eu semeei, ou que as minhas plantações sejam destruídas.
9 If my heart has been deceived over a woman, or if I have waited in ambush at my friend’s door,
9 Se o meu coração alguma vez foi seduzido pela mulher do meu vizinho, e se fiquei escondido, espiando a porta da casa dela,
10 then let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lean over her.
10 então que a minha mulher se torne escrava de outro, e que outros durmam com ela.
11 For this is a crime and a very great injustice.
11 Se eu tivesse cometido esse crime horrível, o tribunal deveria me condenar.
12 It is a fire devouring all the way to perdition, and it roots out all that springs forth.
12 Esse pecado seria como um incêndio terrível, infernal, que destruiria tudo o que tenho.
13 If I have despised being subject to judgment with my servant or my maid, when they had any complaint against me,
13 “Quando um empregado ou empregada reclamava contra mim, eu resolvia o assunto com justiça.
14 then what will I do when God rises to judge, and, when he inquires, how will I respond to him?
14 Se eu não tivesse agido assim, que faria quando Deus me julgasse? Que responderia, quando ele pedisse conta dos meus atos?
15 Is not he who created me in the womb, also he who labored to make him? And did not one and the same form me in the womb?
15 Pois o mesmo Deus que me criou, criou também os meus empregados; ele deu a vida tanto a mim como a eles.
16 If I have denied the poor what they wanted and have made the eyes of the widow wait;
16 “Nunca deixei de ajudar os pobres, nem permiti que as viúvas chorassem de desespero.
17 if I have eaten my morsel of food alone, while orphans have not eaten from it;
17 Nunca tomei sozinho as minhas refeições, mas sempre reparti a minha comida com os órfãos.
18 (for from my infancy mercy grew with me, and it came out with me from my mother’s womb;)
18 Eu os tratava como se fosse pai deles e sempre protegi as viúvas.
19 if I have looked down on him who was perishing because he had no clothing and the poor without any covering,
19 Quando via alguém morrendo de frio por falta de roupa ou notava algum pobre que não tinha com que se cobrir,
20 if his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
20 eu lhe dava roupas quentes, feitas com a lã das minhas próprias ovelhas, e ele me agradecia do fundo do coração.
21 if I have lifted up my hand over an orphan, even when it might seem to me that I have the advantage over him at the gate;
21 Se alguma vez fui violento com um órfão, sabendo que eu tinha o apoio dos juízes,
22 then may my shoulder fall from its joint, and may my arm, with all its bones, be broken.
22 então que os meus braços sejam quebrados, que sejam arrancados dos meus ombros.
23 For I have always feared God, like waves flowing over me, whose weight I was unable to bear.
23 Eu nunca faria nenhuma dessas coisas, pois tenho pavor do castigo de Deus e não poderia enfrentar a sua presença
24 If I have considered gold to be my strength, or if I have called purified gold ‘my Trust;’
24 “Jamais confiei no ouro; ele nunca foi a base da minha segurança.
25 if I have rejoiced over my great success, and over the many things my hand has obtained;
25 Nunca me orgulhei de ter muitas riquezas, nem de ganhar muito dinheiro.
26 if I gazed upon the sun when it shined and the moon advancing brightly,
26 Tenho visto o sol brilhar e a lua caminhar em toda a sua beleza,
27 so that my heart rejoiced in secret and I kissed my hand with my mouth,
27 porém nunca os adorei, nem em segredo, e não lhes atirei beijos com a mão.
28 which is a very great iniquity and a denial against the most high God;
28 Se tivesse cometido esse terrível pecado, eu teria sido infiel a Deus, que está lá em cima, e o tribunal deveria me condenar.
29 if I have been glad at the ruin of him who hated me and have exulted that evil found him,
29 “Jamais me alegrei com o sofrimento dos meus inimigos, nem fiquei contente se lhes acontecia alguma desgraça.
30 for I have not been given my throat to sin by asking for a curse on his soul;
30 E nunca fiz uma oração pedindo a Deus que matasse algum deles.
31 if the men around my tabernacle have not said: “He might give us some of his food, so that we will be filled,”
31 “Os empregados que trabalham para mim sabem que os meus convidados comem à vontade, do bom e do melhor.
32 for the foreigner did not remain at the door, my door was open to the traveler;
32 Nunca deixei um estrangeiro dormir na rua; os viajantes sempre se hospedaram na minha casa.
33 if, as man does, I have hidden my sin and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom;
33 Jamais procurei encobrir as minhas faltas, como fazem algumas pessoas, nem escondi no coração os meus pecados.
34 if I became frightened by an excessive crowd, and the disrespect of close relatives alarmed me, so that I would much rather have remained silent or have gone out the door;
34 Nunca tive medo daquilo que os outros poderiam dizer; não fiquei dentro de casa, calado, com receio de que zombassem de mim.
35 then, would he grant me a hearing, so that the Almighty would listen to my desire, and he who judges would himself write a book,
35 “Como gostaria que alguém me ouvisse! Aqui eu termino e assino a minha defesa; que o Todo-Poderoso me responda! Que o meu Adversário escreva a acusação,
36 which I would then carry on my shoulder and wrap around me like a crown?
36 e, com orgulho, eu a carregarei no ombro e a porei na cabeça como se fosse uma coroa!
37 With each of my steps, I would pronounce and offer it, as if to a prince.
37 Darei conta a Deus de todos os meus atos e na presença dele ficarei de cabeça erguida.
38 So, if my land cries out against me, and if its furrows weep with it,
38 “As minhas terras nunca choraram, nem gritaram ao céu contra mim.
39 if I have used its fruits for nothing but money and have afflicted the souls of its tillers,
39 Pois, se comi os seus frutos, sempre paguei os trabalhadores como devia e jamais deixei que morressem de fome.
40 then, may thistles spring forth for me instead of grain, and thorns instead of barley. (This ended the words of Job.)
40 Se não estou dizendo a verdade, então que nas minhas terras cresçam espinhos em vez de trigo e mato em vez de Aqui terminam as palavras de Jó.
