1 Is there not a warfare to a mortal, upon earth? And, as the days of a hireling, are not his days?
1 “Acaso a vida na terra não é uma luta? Nossos dias são como os de um trabalhador braçal,
2 As, a bondman, panteth for the shadow, and as, a hireling, longeth for his wage,
2 como o servo que anseia pela sombra, como o empregado à espera do pagamento.
3 So, have I been made to inherit months of calamity, and, nights of weariness, have been appointed me.
3 Recebi de herança meses de puro vazio, fui condenado a passar noites longas em aflição.
4 As soon as I lie down, I say, When shall I arise? yet he lengtheneth out the evening, and I am wearied with tossings until the breeze of twilight.
4 Deitado na cama, penso: ‘Quando chegará a manhã?’, mas a noite se arrasta e reviro-me até o amanhecer.
5 My flesh is clothed with worms and a coating of dust, My skin, hath hardened, and then run afresh:
5 Meu corpo está coberto de vermes e crostas de feridas; minha pele se racha e vaza pus.”
6 My days, are swifter than a weavers shuttle, and they are spent, without hope.
6 “Meus dias correm mais depressa que a lançadeira de um tecelão e terminam sem esperança.
7 Remember thou, that, a wind, is my life, not again shall mine eye see blessing:
7 Lembra-te, ó Deus, de que minha vida é apenas um sopro; nunca mais voltarei a ver a felicidade.
8 Nor shall see methe eye that used to behold me, Thine eyes, are upon me, and I am not.
8 Tu me vês agora, mas em breve não me verás; procurarás por mim, mas já não existirei.
9 A cloud faileth, and is gone, So, he that descendeth to hades, shall not come up:
9 Como uma nuvem que se dissipa e some, os que descem à sepultura
10 He shall not return again to his house, and his own place shall be acquainted with him no more.
10 Deixam seu lar para sempre, e ninguém se lembrará deles novamente.
11 I also, cannot restrain my mouth,I must speak, in the anguish of my spirit, I must find utterance, in the bitterness of my soul.
11 “Não posso me calar, tenho de expressar minha angústia; minha alma amargurada precisa se queixar.
12 Am, I, a sea, or a sea-monster,That thou shouldst set over me a watch?
12 Acaso sou eu o mar revolto ou algum monstro marinho, para que me ponhas sob vigilância?
13 When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall help to carry my complaint,
13 Penso: ‘Na cama encontrarei descanso, e o leito me aliviará o sofrimento’,
14 Then thou scarest me with dreams, and, by visions, dost thou terrify me:
14 mas tu me assustas com sonhos e me aterrorizas com visões.
15 So that my soul chooseth strangling, Death, rather than my bones!
15 Preferiria ser estrangulado; melhor morrer que sofrer assim.
16 I am wasted away, Not, to times age-abiding, can I live, Let me alone, for, a breath, are my days.
16 Odeio minha vida e não quero continuar a viver; deixa-me em paz, pois meus dias passam como um sopro.
17 What is a mortal, that thou shouldst nurture him? Or that thou shouldst fix upon him thy mind?
17 “O que é o ser humano, para que lhe dês tanta importância e penses nele com tanta atenção?
18 That thou shouldst inspect him morning by morning, moment by moment, shouldst test him?
18 Pois o examinas todas as manhãs e o pões à prova a cada instante.
19 How long wilt thou not look away from me? Wilt thou not let me alone, till I can swallow my spittle?
19 Por que não me deixas em paz? Dá-me tempo pelo menos para engolir a saliva!
20 I have sinned, What can I do for thee, thou watcher of men? Wherefore hast thou set me as thine object of attack, or have I become, unto thee, a burden?
20 Se eu pequei, o que te fiz, ó Vigia de toda a humanidade? Por que fizeste de mim o teu alvo? Acaso sou um fardo para ti?
21 And why wilt thou not remove my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? For, now, in the dust, should I lie down, and thou shouldst seek me diligently, and I should not be.
21 Por que não perdoas meu pecado e removes minha culpa? Pois em breve me deitarei no pó e morrerei; quando procurares por mim, já não existirei”.
