1 Also these are the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah the king of Judah have collected.
1 Aqui estão mais alguns provérbios de Salomão, escolhidos e copiados por homens que estavam a serviço do rei Ezequias, de Judá.
2 It is the honor of God to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.
2 Respeitamos a Deus por causa daquilo que ele esconde de nós; e respeitamos as autoridades por causa daquilo que elas nos explicam.
3 As are the heavens for height, and the earth is for depth, so should the heart of kings be unsearchable.
3 Você nunca sabe o que um rei está pensando; os pensamentos dele estão fora do nosso alcance, assim como as alturas do céu ou as profundezas da terra.
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there will come forth a vessel for the melter.
4 Purifique a prata, e o artista poderá fazer uma obra de arte.
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be firmly established in righteousness.
5 Afaste do rei os maus conselheiros porque o que torna forte um governo é a justiça.
6 Do not glorify thyself in the presence of the king, and force thyself not into the place of great men;
6 Quando você estiver diante das autoridades, não se faça de importante.
7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, "Come up hither," than that thou shouldst be put lower in the presence of the prince, which thy own eyes have often seen.
7 É melhor que depois lhe deem um lugar de honra do que você ser humilhado na presença das autoridades.
8 Do not proceed to a contest hastily, lest thou know not what thou wilt have to do at its end, when thy neighbor hath put thee to confusion.
8 Não tenha pressa de ir ao tribunal para contar o que você viu. Se mais tarde outra testemunha provar que você está errado, o que é que você vai fazer?
9 Carry on thy cause with thy neighbor; but lay not open the secret of another:
9 Defenda a sua causa contra o seu vizinho, mas não revele nada que alguém lhe tenha contado a respeito do assunto.
10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thy infamy never be removed.
10 Do contrário todos ficarão sabendo que você não consegue guardar segredos, e você nunca mais se livrará desta vergonha.
11 Like apples of gold among figures of silver is a word spoken in a proper manner.
11 A palavra certa na hora certa é como um desenho de ouro feito em cima de prata.
12 As an earring of gold, and a pendant of fine gold, so is a wise reprover toward an ear that listeneth.
12 Quando alguém está querendo aprender, o conselho de uma pessoa experiente vale mais do que anéis de ouro ou joias de ouro puro.
13 As the cooling of snow on a harvestday, so is a faithful messenger to those that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his master.
13 Como água fresca no calor do tempo da colheita, assim o mensageiro de confiança reanima quem o mandou.
14 Like clouds and wind without rain, so is a man that vaunteth falsely of a gift.
14 Quem promete e não dá é como a nuvem e o vento que não trazem chuva.
15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh bones.
15 A paciência convence até as autoridades; a perseverança pode vencer qualquer dificuldade.
16 Hast thou found honey: eat so much as is sufficient for thee: lest thou consume too much of it, and have to vomit it forth.
16 Não coma mel demais, pois você pode vomitar.
17 Make thy foot scarce in the house of thy friend: lest he have too much of thee, and so hate thee.
17 Não vá a toda hora à casa do vizinho, pois ele pode se cansar e acabar ficando com raiva de você.
18 A battleaxe, and a sword, and a sharpened arrow is a man that testifieth as a false witness against his neighbor.
18 A pessoa que diz mentiras a respeito dos outros é tão perigosa quanto uma espada, um porrete ou uma flecha afiada.
19 Like a broken tooth and a foot out of joint, is confidence in a treacherous man in a time of distress.
19 Num momento de dificuldade, depender de uma pessoa que não merece confiança é como mastigar com um dente estragado, andar com um pé aleijado
20 As he that taketh off his garment on a cold day, as vinegar is upon natron: so is he that singeth songs before an unhappy heart.
20 ou querer se esquentar, num dia frio, tirando a roupa. Cantar para quem está triste é como esfregar sal numa ferida.
21 If thy enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;
21 Se o seu inimigo estiver com fome, dê comida a ele; se estiver com sede, dê água.
22 For though thou gatherest coals of fire upon his head, yet will the Lord repay it unto thee.
22 Porque assim você o fará queimar de remorso e vergonha, e o Senhor Deus recompensará você.
23 The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth secret talking, angry countenances.
23 Assim como o vento norte traz chuva, os mexericos trazem ódio.
24 It is better to dwell in the corner of a roof, than with a quarrelsome woman even in a roomy house.
24 É melhor morar no fundo do quintal do que dentro de casa com uma mulher briguenta.
25 As cold water is to a fainting soul, so are good news from a faroff country.
25 Ouvir uma boa notícia que a gente não espera é como tomar um gole de água fresca quando se tem sede.
26 Like a turbid spring and a corrupt fountain, is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
26 A pessoa boa que se deixa levar por uma pessoa má é como uma fonte de água barrenta ou como um poço contaminado.
27 To eat too much honey is not good: so is it honor to set a limit to mens honor.
27 Assim como mel demais não faz bem, também não é bom andar procurando elogios.
28 Like a city that is broken in, and is without walls: so is the man that hath no control over his spirit.
28 Quem não sabe se controlar é tão sem defesa como uma cidade sem muralhas.
