1 Also these are the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah the king of Judah have collected.
1 São também estes provérbios de Salomão, os quais transcreveram os homens de Ezequias, rei de Judá.
2 It is the honor of God to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.
2 A glória de Deus é encobrir as coisas, mas a glória dos reis é esquadrinhá-las.
3 As are the heavens for height, and the earth is for depth, so should the heart of kings be unsearchable.
3 Como a altura dos céus e a profundeza da terra, assim o coração dos reis é insondável.
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there will come forth a vessel for the melter.
4 Tira da prata a escória, e sairá vaso para o ourives;
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be firmly established in righteousness.
5 tira o perverso da presença do rei, e o seu trono se firmará na justiça.
6 Do not glorify thyself in the presence of the king, and force thyself not into the place of great men;
6 Não te glories na presença do rei, nem te ponhas no meio dos grandes;
7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, "Come up hither," than that thou shouldst be put lower in the presence of the prince, which thy own eyes have often seen.
7 porque melhor é que te digam: Sobe para aqui!, do que seres humilhado diante do príncipe. A respeito do que os teus olhos viram,
8 Do not proceed to a contest hastily, lest thou know not what thou wilt have to do at its end, when thy neighbor hath put thee to confusion.
8 não te apresses a litigar, pois, ao fim, que farás, quando o teu próximo te puser em apuros?
9 Carry on thy cause with thy neighbor; but lay not open the secret of another:
9 Pleiteia a tua causa diretamente com o teu próximo e não descubras o segredo de outrem;
10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thy infamy never be removed.
10 para que não te vitupere aquele que te ouvir, e não se te apegue a tua infâmia.
11 Like apples of gold among figures of silver is a word spoken in a proper manner.
11 Como maçãs de ouro em salvas de prata, assim é a palavra dita a seu tempo.
12 As an earring of gold, and a pendant of fine gold, so is a wise reprover toward an ear that listeneth.
12 Como pendentes e joias de ouro puro, assim é o sábio repreensor para o ouvido atento.
13 As the cooling of snow on a harvestday, so is a faithful messenger to those that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his master.
13 Como o frescor de neve no tempo da ceifa, assim é o mensageiro fiel para com os que o enviam, porque refrigera a alma dos seus senhores.
14 Like clouds and wind without rain, so is a man that vaunteth falsely of a gift.
14 Como nuvens e ventos que não trazem chuva, assim é o homem que se gaba de dádivas que não fez.
15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh bones.
15 A longanimidade persuade o príncipe, e a língua branda esmaga ossos.
16 Hast thou found honey: eat so much as is sufficient for thee: lest thou consume too much of it, and have to vomit it forth.
16 Achaste mel? Come apenas o que te basta, para que não te fartes dele e venhas a vomitá-lo.
17 Make thy foot scarce in the house of thy friend: lest he have too much of thee, and so hate thee.
17 Não sejas frequente na casa do teu próximo, para que não se enfade de ti e te aborreça.
18 A battleaxe, and a sword, and a sharpened arrow is a man that testifieth as a false witness against his neighbor.
18 Maça, espada e flecha aguda é o homem que levanta falso testemunho contra o seu próximo.
19 Like a broken tooth and a foot out of joint, is confidence in a treacherous man in a time of distress.
19 Como dente quebrado e pé sem firmeza, assim é a confiança no desleal, no tempo da angústia.
20 As he that taketh off his garment on a cold day, as vinegar is upon natron: so is he that singeth songs before an unhappy heart.
20 Como quem se despe num dia de frio e como vinagre sobre feridas, assim é o que entoa canções junto ao coração aflito.
21 If thy enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;
21 Se o que te aborrece tiver fome, dá-lhe pão para comer; se tiver sede, dá-lhe água para beber,
22 For though thou gatherest coals of fire upon his head, yet will the Lord repay it unto thee.
22 porque assim amontoarás brasas vivas sobre a sua cabeça, e o
23 The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth secret talking, angry countenances.
23 O vento norte traz chuva, e a língua fingida, o rosto irado.
24 It is better to dwell in the corner of a roof, than with a quarrelsome woman even in a roomy house.
24 Melhor é morar no canto do eirado do que junto com a mulher rixosa na mesma casa.
25 As cold water is to a fainting soul, so are good news from a faroff country.
25 Como água fria para o sedento, tais são as boas-novas vindas de um país remoto.
26 Like a turbid spring and a corrupt fountain, is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.
26 Como fonte que foi turvada e manancial corrupto, assim é o justo que cede ao perverso.
27 To eat too much honey is not good: so is it honor to set a limit to mens honor.
27 Comer muito mel não é bom; assim, procurar a própria honra não é honra.
28 Like a city that is broken in, and is without walls: so is the man that hath no control over his spirit.
28 Como cidade derribada, que não tem muros, assim é o homem que não tem domínio próprio.
