1 And Job continued to take up his parable, and said,
1 E Jó continuou a sua fala e disse:
2 Who will give me back months like those which are past, days like those when God guarded me;
2 “Ah! Se eu pudesse voltar meses atrás, para os dias em que Deus me protegia!
3 When his lamp shone over my head, when by his light I could walk in darkness;
3 Naquele tempo, Deus iluminava o meu caminho, e com a sua luz eu podia andar na escuridão.
4 As I was in the days of my abundance, when the confidence of God was upon my tent:
4 Naqueles dias, eu estava bem de vida, e a amizade de Deus era a proteção do meu lar.
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my servants stood round about me;
5 O Todo-Poderoso estava comigo, e os meus filhos viviam ao meu redor.
6 When I bathed my steps in cream, and the rock poured out near me streamlets of oil!
6 Em casa sempre havia leite à vontade e também azeite, tirado das oliveiras plantadas entre as pedras.
7 When I went out to the gate close by the city, when in the open place I established my seat:
7 Quando eu saía para a reunião do tribunal e me assentava entre os juízes,
8 Young men saw me, and hid themselves; and the aged rose up, and remained standing;
8 os moços me viam e abriam passagem, e os idosos se punham de pé.
9 Princes stopped in the midst of their words, and laid their hand on their mouth:
9 As pessoas mais importantes paravam de falar e ficavam em silêncio.
10 The voice of nobles was arrested, and their tongue cleaved to their palate.
10 As autoridades se calavam; não diziam mais nada.
11 For the ear that heard me called me happy; and the eye that saw me bore witness for me;
11 “Quem me ouvia falar me dava parabéns; os que me viam falavam bem de mim,
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, yea, that had none to help him.
12 pois eu ajudava os pobres que pediam ajuda e cuidava dos órfãos que não tinham quem os protegesse.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and the heart of the widow I caused to sing for joy.
13 Pessoas que estavam na miséria me abençoavam, e as viúvas se alegravam com o meu auxílio.
14 I took righteousness as my garment, and it clothed me: as a robe and a mitre was justice unto me.
14 A minha justiça e a minha honestidade faziam parte de mim; eram como a roupa que eu uso todos os dias.
15 Eyes was I to the blind; and feet to the lame was I.
15 Eu era olhos para os cegos e pés para os aleijados.
16 A father was I to the needy; and the cause of him I knew not I used to investigate.
16 Era pai dos pobres e defensor dos direitos dos estrangeiros.
17 And I broke the cuttingteeth of the wrongdoer, and out of his teeth I cast down his prey.
17 Eu acabava com o poder dos exploradores e livrava das suas garras as vítimas.
18 And I said then, "In the midst of my nest shall I depart hence, and like the sand shall I have many days.
18 “Eu pensava assim: ‘Vou viver uma vida longa e morrer em casa, com todo o conforto.
19 My root will stand open for the water, and the dew will lodge on my boughs.
19 Serei como uma árvore de raízes que chegam até a água, uma árvore que todas as noites é molhada pelo orvalho.
20 My glory will ever be new with me, and my bow will acquire fresh strength in my hand."
20 Todos só falarão bem de mim, e eu serei sempre vigoroso e forte.’
21 Unto me men listened, and waited, and watched in silence for my counsel
21 Todas as pessoas me davam atenção e em silêncio escutavam os meus conselhos.
22 After my words they made no reply, and my speech dropped on them like dew.
22 Quando acabava de falar, ninguém discordava. As minhas palavras entravam na cabeça deles como se fossem gotas de água na areia.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened wide their mouth as for the latter rain.
23 Todos as esperavam ansiosos, como se espera a chuva no tempo de calor.
24 I smiled on those that had lost their confidence; and the light of my countenance they never cast down.
24 Eu sorria para aqueles que tinham perdido a esperança; o meu rosto alegre lhes dava coragem.
25 I chose their way for them, and I sat as chief, and dwelt as king in his army, as one that comforteth mourners.
25 Eu era como um chefe, decidindo o que eles deviam fazer; eu os dirigia como um rei à frente do seu exército e os consolava nas horas de aflição.
