1 And Job continued to take up his parable, and said,
1 Prosseguiu Jó no seu discurso e disse:
2 Who will give me back months like those which are past, days like those when God guarded me;
2 Ah! Quem me dera ser como fui nos meses passados, como nos dias em que Deus me guardava!
3 When his lamp shone over my head, when by his light I could walk in darkness;
3 Quando fazia resplandecer a sua lâmpada sobre a minha cabeça, quando eu, guiado por sua luz, caminhava pelas trevas;
4 As I was in the days of my abundance, when the confidence of God was upon my tent:
4 como fui nos dias do meu vigor, quando a amizade de Deus estava sobre a minha tenda;
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my servants stood round about me;
5 quando o Todo-Poderoso ainda estava comigo, e os meus filhos, em redor de mim;
6 When I bathed my steps in cream, and the rock poured out near me streamlets of oil!
6 quando eu lavava os pés em leite, e da rocha me corriam ribeiros de azeite.
7 When I went out to the gate close by the city, when in the open place I established my seat:
7 Quando eu saía para a porta da cidade, e na praça me era dado sentar-me,
8 Young men saw me, and hid themselves; and the aged rose up, and remained standing;
8 os moços me viam e se retiravam; os idosos se levantavam e se punham em pé;
9 Princes stopped in the midst of their words, and laid their hand on their mouth:
9 os príncipes reprimiam as suas palavras e punham a mão sobre a boca;
10 The voice of nobles was arrested, and their tongue cleaved to their palate.
10 a voz dos nobres emudecia, e a sua língua se apegava ao paladar.
11 For the ear that heard me called me happy; and the eye that saw me bore witness for me;
11 Ouvindo-me algum ouvido, esse me chamava feliz; vendo-me algum olho, dava testemunho de mim;
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, yea, that had none to help him.
12 porque eu livrava os pobres que clamavam e também o órfão que não tinha quem o socorresse.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and the heart of the widow I caused to sing for joy.
13 A bênção do que estava a perecer vinha sobre mim, e eu fazia rejubilar-se o coração da viúva.
14 I took righteousness as my garment, and it clothed me: as a robe and a mitre was justice unto me.
14 Eu me cobria de justiça, e esta me servia de veste; como manto e turbante era a minha equidade.
15 Eyes was I to the blind; and feet to the lame was I.
15 Eu me fazia de olhos para o cego e de pés para o coxo.
16 A father was I to the needy; and the cause of him I knew not I used to investigate.
16 Dos necessitados era pai e até as causas dos desconhecidos eu examinava.
17 And I broke the cuttingteeth of the wrongdoer, and out of his teeth I cast down his prey.
17 Eu quebrava os queixos do iníquo e dos seus dentes lhe fazia eu cair a vítima.
18 And I said then, "In the midst of my nest shall I depart hence, and like the sand shall I have many days.
18 Eu dizia: no meu ninho expirarei, multiplicarei os meus dias como a areia.
19 My root will stand open for the water, and the dew will lodge on my boughs.
19 A minha raiz se estenderá até às águas, e o orvalho ficará durante a noite sobre os meus ramos;
20 My glory will ever be new with me, and my bow will acquire fresh strength in my hand."
20 a minha honra se renovará em mim, e o meu arco se reforçará na minha mão.
21 Unto me men listened, and waited, and watched in silence for my counsel
21 Os que me ouviam esperavam o meu conselho e guardavam silêncio para ouvi-lo.
22 After my words they made no reply, and my speech dropped on them like dew.
22 Havendo eu falado, não replicavam; as minhas palavras caíam sobre eles como orvalho.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened wide their mouth as for the latter rain.
23 Esperavam-me como à chuva, abriam a boca como à chuva de primavera.
24 I smiled on those that had lost their confidence; and the light of my countenance they never cast down.
24 Sorria-me para eles quando não tinham confiança; e a luz do meu rosto não desprezavam.
25 I chose their way for them, and I sat as chief, and dwelt as king in his army, as one that comforteth mourners.
25 Eu lhes escolhia o caminho, assentava-me como chefe e habitava como rei entre as suas tropas, como quem consola os que pranteiam.
