1 Why are not times of punishment treasured up by the Almighty, and why do his adorers not see his days of retribution?
1 Por que não reserva tempos para si o Todo-poderoso? E por que ignoram seus dias os que lhe são fiéis?
2 The wicked remove landmarks: they rob flocks, and feed them.
2 Os maus mudam as divisas das terras, e fazem pastar o rebanho que roubaram.
3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take in pledge the widows ox.
3 Empurram diante de si o jumento do órfão, e tomam em penhor o boi da viúva.
4 They chase the needy out of the highway: altogether hide themselves the poor of the earth.
4 Afastam os pobres do caminho, todos os miseráveis da região precisam esconder-se.
5 Behold, as wild asses in the wilderness go they forth to their work, rising betimes after their prey: the desert yieldeth food for them and for their young men.
5 Como os asnos no deserto, saem para o trabalho, à procura do que comer, à procura do pão para seus filhos.
6 In the field they reap their food; and in the vineyard of the wicked they gather the fruit.
6 Ceifam a forragem num campo, vindimam a vinha do ímpio.
7 They cause the poor to spend the night naked, without clothing and without any covering in the cold.
7 Passam a noite nus, sem roupa, sem cobertor contra o frio.
8 Through the sweeping rain of the mountains are they made wet, and for want of a shelter do they embrace the rock.
8 São banhados pelas chuvas da montanha; sem abrigo, abraçam-se com as rochas.
9 The others pluck from the breast the fatherless, and the garment of the poor they take in pledge.
9 Arrancam o órfão do seio materno, tomam em penhor as crianças do pobre.
10 They cause him to go naked without clothing, and from the hungry they take away the sheaf:
10 Andam nus, despidos, esfomeados, carregam feixes.
11 Within their walls do they make oil, they tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.
11 Espremem o óleo nos celeiros, pisam os lagares, morrendo de sede.
12 Out of a populous city is groaning heard, and the soul of the deadly wounded crieth out: yet God regardeth it not as an offence.
12 Sobe da cidade o estertor dos moribundos, a alma dos feridos grita: Deus não ouve suas súplicas.
13 Yon men are of those that rebel against the light: they know not its ways, nor abide in its paths.
13 Outros são rebeldes à luz, não conhecem seus caminhos, não habitam em suas veredas.
14 With the earliest light riseth the murderer, he slayeth the poor and needy, and in the night he becometh like the thief.
14 O homicida levanta-se quando cai o dia, para matar o pobre e o indigente; o ladrão vagueia durante a noite.
15 And the eye of the adulterer watcheth for the twilight, saying, No eye will see me; and placeth a covering on his face.
15 O adúltero espreita o crepúsculo: Ninguém me verá, diz ele, e põe um véu no rosto.
16 They break into houses in the dark, in the daytime they lock themselves in: they know not the light.
16 Nas trevas, forçam as casas; escondem-se durante o dia; não conhecem a luz.
17 For to all of these alike is the morning as the shadow of death; for they are familiar with the terrors of the shadow of death.
17 Para eles, com efeito, a manhã é uma sombra espessa, pois estão acostumados aos terrores da noite.
18 Swift are such men to flee on the face of the water; accursed is their field on the land; none of them turneth himself to the way, of the vineyards.
18 Correm rapidamente à superfície das águas, sua herança é maldita na terra; já não tomarão o caminho das vinhas.
19 Drought and heat speedily consume the snowwaters: so doth the grave those who have sinned.
19 Como a seca e o calor absorvem a água das neves, assim a região dos mortos engole os pecadores.
20 The mother that bore such a one will forget him; the worm will feed sweetly on him; he will be no more remembered; and like a tree will wickedness be broken.
20 O ventre que o gerou, esquece-o, os vermes fazem dele as suas delícias; ninguém mais se lembra dele.
21 He illtreateth the barren that heareth not; and to the widow he acteth not well.
21 A iniqüidade é quebrada como uma árvore. Maltratava a mulher estéril e sem filhos, não fazia o bem à viúva;
22 But he also draweth down the mighty with his power: he riseth up, no one is sure of life.
22 punha sua força a serviço dos poderosos. Levanta-se e já não pode mais contar com a vida.
23 To such God granteth to be in safety, that he may find support; and His eyes are upon their ways.
23 Ele lhes dá segurança e apoio, mas seus olhos vigiam seus caminhos.
24 They are exalted; in but a little while they are no more; and they are brought down low: like all others are they gathered in, and like the top of the ear of corn are they cut off.
24 Levantam-se, subitamente já não existem; caem; como os outros, são arrebatados, são ceifados como cabeças de espigas.
25 But if it be not so, who will prove me a liar, and render nought my word?
25 Se assim não é, quem me desmentirá, quem reduzirá a nada as minhas palavras?
