1 Why are not times of punishment treasured up by the Almighty, and why do his adorers not see his days of retribution?
1 "Por que o Todo-poderoso não marca as datas para julgamento? Por que aqueles que o conhecem não chegam a vê-las?
2 The wicked remove landmarks: they rob flocks, and feed them.
2 Há os que mudam os marcos dos limites e apascentam rebanhos que eles roubaram.
3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take in pledge the widows ox.
3 Levam o jumento que pertence ao órfão e tomam o boi da viúva como penhor.
4 They chase the needy out of the highway: altogether hide themselves the poor of the earth.
4 Forçam os necessitados a saírem do caminho e os pobres da terra a esconder-se.
5 Behold, as wild asses in the wilderness go they forth to their work, rising betimes after their prey: the desert yieldeth food for them and for their young men.
5 Como jumentos selvagens no deserto, os pobres vão em busca de comida; da terra deserta a obtêm para os seus filhos.
6 In the field they reap their food; and in the vineyard of the wicked they gather the fruit.
6 Juntam forragem nos campos e respigam nas vinhas dos ímpios.
7 They cause the poor to spend the night naked, without clothing and without any covering in the cold.
7 Pela falta de roupas, passam a noite nus; não têm com que cobrir-se no frio.
8 Through the sweeping rain of the mountains are they made wet, and for want of a shelter do they embrace the rock.
8 Encharcados pelas chuvas das montanhas, abraçam-se às rochas por falta de abrigo.
9 The others pluck from the breast the fatherless, and the garment of the poor they take in pledge.
9 A criança órfã é arrancada do seio de sua mãe; o recém-nascido do pobre é tomado para pagar uma dívida.
10 They cause him to go naked without clothing, and from the hungry they take away the sheaf:
10 Por falta de roupas, andam nus; carregam os feixes, mas continuam famintos.
11 Within their walls do they make oil, they tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.
11 Espremem azeitonas dentro dos seus muros; pisam uvas nos lagares, mas assim mesmo sofrem sede.
12 Out of a populous city is groaning heard, and the soul of the deadly wounded crieth out: yet God regardeth it not as an offence.
12 Sobem da cidade os gemidos dos que estão para morrer, e as almas dos feridos clamam por socorro. Mas Deus não vê mal nisso.
13 Yon men are of those that rebel against the light: they know not its ways, nor abide in its paths.
13 "Há os que se revoltam contra a luz, não conhecem os caminhos dela e não permanecem em suas veredas.
14 With the earliest light riseth the murderer, he slayeth the poor and needy, and in the night he becometh like the thief.
14 De manhã o assassino se levanta e mata os pobres e os necessitados; de noite age como ladrão.
15 And the eye of the adulterer watcheth for the twilight, saying, No eye will see me; and placeth a covering on his face.
15 Os olhos do adúltero ficam à espera do crepúsculo; ‘Nenhum olho me verá’, pensa ele; e mantém oculto o rosto.
16 They break into houses in the dark, in the daytime they lock themselves in: they know not the light.
16 No escuro os homens invadem casas, mas de dia se enclausuram; não querem saber da luz.
17 For to all of these alike is the morning as the shadow of death; for they are familiar with the terrors of the shadow of death.
17 Para eles a manhã é tremenda escuridão; eles são amigos dos pavores das trevas.
18 Swift are such men to flee on the face of the water; accursed is their field on the land; none of them turneth himself to the way, of the vineyards.
18 "São, porém, como espuma sobre as águas; sua parte da terra foi amaldiçoada, e por isso ninguém vai às vinhas.
19 Drought and heat speedily consume the snowwaters: so doth the grave those who have sinned.
19 Assim como o calor e a seca depressa consomem a neve derretida, assim a sepultura consome os que pecaram.
20 The mother that bore such a one will forget him; the worm will feed sweetly on him; he will be no more remembered; and like a tree will wickedness be broken.
20 Sua mãe os esquece, os vermes se banqueteiam neles. Ninguém se lembra dos maus; quebram-se como árvores.
21 He illtreateth the barren that heareth not; and to the widow he acteth not well.
21 Devoram a estéril e sem filhos e não mostram bondade para com a viúva.
22 But he also draweth down the mighty with his power: he riseth up, no one is sure of life.
22 Mas Deus, por seu poder, os arranca; embora firmemente estabelecidos, a vida deles não tem segurança.
23 To such God granteth to be in safety, that he may find support; and His eyes are upon their ways.
23 Ele poderá deixá-los descansar, sentindo-se seguros, mas os vigia atento nos caminhos que seguem.
24 They are exalted; in but a little while they are no more; and they are brought down low: like all others are they gathered in, and like the top of the ear of corn are they cut off.
24 Por um breve instante são exaltados, e depois se vão; colhidos como todos os demais; ceifados como espigas de cereal.
25 But if it be not so, who will prove me a liar, and render nought my word?
25 "Se não é assim, quem poderá provar que minto e reduzir a nada as minhas palavras? "
