1 Man born of a woman is short of days, and sated with harrowing trouble.
1 “Como é frágil o ser humano! Sua vida é breve e cheia de aflições.
2 Like a flower he cometh forth, and is cut down: and he fleeth like a shadow, and remaineth not.
2 Como uma flor, nasce e depois murcha; como uma sombra passageira, some depressa.
3 And yet on such a one dost thou open thy eyes, and me thou bringest into judgment with thee?
3 É preciso que vigies uma criatura tão frágil e exijas que te preste contas?
4 Who can make a clean thing out of an unclean? not one thing.
4 Quem pode extrair pureza de algo impuro? Ninguém!
5 Seeing that his days are determined, the number of his months are fixed with thee, that thou hast set his bounds which he cannot pass:
5 Estabeleceste a extensão de nossa vida; sabes quantos meses viveremos, e não recebemos nem um dia a mais.
6 Turn thyself from him that he may recover from his pain, and be able to enjoy like a hired laborer his day.
6 Portanto, dá-nos sossego, deixa-nos descansar! Somos como trabalhadores braçais; permite que terminemos nosso trabalho em paz.
7 For there is hope for the tree: if it be cut down, it may still sprout again, while its young shoot will not cease.
7 “Até mesmo uma árvore tem mais esperança, pois, se for cortada, voltará a brotar e dar novos ramos.
8 If even its root become old in the earth, and its stock die in the dust:
8 Ainda que as raízes tenham envelhecido na terra e o tronco esteja podre,
9 Yet through the scent of water will it flourish again, and produce boughs as though It were newly planted.
9 com o cheiro da água, voltará a brotar e dar ramos, como uma planta nova.
10 But man dieth, and lieth powerless: yea, the son of earth departethand where is he?
10 “Mas, quando as pessoas morrem, perdem as forças; dão o último suspiro e, depois, onde estão?
11 The waters run off from the sea, and the river faileth and drieth up:
11 Como a água evapora do lago e o rio desaparece na seca,
12 So doth man lie down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they will not awake, and will not be roused out of their sleep.
12 são colocadas no túmulo e não voltam a se levantar. Até que os céus deixem de existir, não acordarão; não serão despertadas de seu sono.
13 Oh who would grant that thou mightest hide me in the nether world, that thou mightest conceal me, until thy wrath be appeased, that thou mightest set for me a fixed time, and remember me then!
13 “Quem dera tu me escondesses na sepultura e me esquecesses ali até tua ira passar! Quem dera me desses um tempo de descanso, para que só então te lembrasses de mim!
14 Or, when a man dieth, will he live again? all the days of my time of service would I then wait, till the hour of my release were come.
14 Podem os mortos voltar a viver? Assim eu teria esperança durante todos os meus anos de luta e aguardaria a libertação que a morte traz.
15 Do thou call, and I will truly answer thee: have a desire for the work of thy hands.
15 Tu chamarias, e eu responderia; tu ansiarias por mim, a obra de tuas mãos.
16 Yet now thou numberest my steps: and thou waitest not with the punishment of my sin.
16 Assim, tu protegerias meus passos, em vez de vigiares meus pecados.
17 Sealed up in a bag is my transgression, and thou yet addest to my iniquity.
17 Meus pecados seriam fechados num saco, e tu cobririas minha culpa.
18 But truly a falling mountain will crumble, and even a rock is moved out of its place.
18 “Em vez disso, assim como os montes desmoronam e as rochas caem de onde estão,
19 The water weareth out stones; thou sweepest away their fragments like the dust of the earth: and so thou destroyest the hope of man.
19 como a água desgasta as pedras e as enchentes arrastam a terra, tu destróis a esperança do ser humano.
20 Thou assailest him with might without ceasing, till he passeth away: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him off.
20 Tu prevaleces sempre sobre ele, e ele se vai; tu o desfiguras na morte e o mandas embora.
21 His children acquire honor, but he knoweth it not: and they are esteemed little, but he perceiveth nothing of them.
21 Não sabe se os filhos crescerão com honra ou afundarão no esquecimento.
22 But his body. on him, feeleth pain, and his soul will mourn for him.
22 Ele sofre sua própria dor e lamenta apenas por si mesmo”.
